I can add Erewhon (Veendam): book by Samuel Butler, published in 1872.

"In Xanadu, did Kubla Khan, a stately pleasure dome decree" -- Samuel Taylor Coleridge poem "Kubla Khan"

Land of the Lotus Eaters - Homer, "Odyssey"

"Utopia" - Thomas More book

Shangri-La was also famously the point from which Jimmy Doolittle's raiders flew in their air attack on Tokyo in early 1942, just a few months after the Pearl harbor attack (actually they flew off USS Hornet). The raid stunned the Japanese. FDR said the raid had come from Shangri-La, presumably a reference to "Lost Horizon".

Hooterville: the fictional town for "Green Acres" and "Petticoat Junction"

(I only know these shows from re-runs, of course :))

Yes, Retired Mustang, I was thinking of the Coleridge poem... but I have seen Olivia Newton John's film as well.

Shangri-La is also a fictional place in Tibet... a place of grand pleasure, allegedly.

Bikini Bottom is definitely targeting a younger crowd... I haven't seen the show myself... "Spongebob Squarepants" lives there.

Brigadoon is a fictional place relating to the legend of leprechauns.

Thanks for joining in the fun!! :D

What a great post :D

What i want to know is where did "Island of the Lotus Eaters" come from!

Homer (the blind Greek poet) is the recognized author of The Iliad and The Odyssey.

The Iliad tells the story of the Trojan War, while The Odyssey tells of Odysseus trying to get back home from the war. (It takes him TEN long years.) He has many adventures along the way, including a visit the the Island of the Lotus Eaters, where those who feast on the plants are overcome by a peaceful apathy.

Apologies if this is more than you wanted to know. I am an English teacher, and mythology is one of my favorite units!
