MDR food for picky teen

Does Celebrity have a "kid's menu" in the MDR?

My 18 year old is a very picky eater -- she lives on pasta or salads. When we were on Disney, after a couple of days of the regular menu, she was relieved to be offered the children's menu even though she was 17 years old!

I know Celebrity has a "right side" and "left side" of the menu but wondering if there's anything for younger diners who aren't very adventurous.

They do have pasta and salad on the menu. In the mean time, there are a lot of new developments on treating ARFID, so you might want to look into treatment if she wants to be able to order from regular menus. See http://uncexchanges.org/2014/11/12/just-a-picky-eater-or-is-it-arfid-avoidantrestrictive-food-intake-disorder-arfid/

Not an eating disorder, just isn't adventurous. About much of anything.

When an 18 year old prefers the children's menu, it really could be a sign of other issues.

She should be able to get plenty of pasta and salads on any cruise, but this would be a great way for her to try new foods.

A little encouragement would go a long way in helping her to adapt her eating habits from children's menu to regular menu.

My 19 year old ordered from the adult menu when something appealed to her, but from the kid's menu a few times. No one shamed her (or us) for her food choices. There were chicken tenders, mac & cheese, a grilled cheese sandwich, probably a burger, pasta, etc. Also, the wait staff was happy to bring her adaptations of the adult menu items (e.g. the pasta with oil and cheese instead of a sauce that didn't appeal). They also let her try something from the menu AND get a back-up item in case she didn't care for it.

I dont know about it being an eating disorder / issue like others have suggested LOL But we had a picky teenager on our first sailing w/ Celebrity also and he did just fine. You can get the kids menu every night which is items like hot dogs, burgers, pizza, nuggets, spagetti, buttered noodles, etc...

We also nudged him to be adventerous on the cruise and try things out of his comfort zone. Told him to look at it like your at a restaurant and can try anything and everything on the menu free of charge...if you dont like it move on to somethign you do like. He did quite well...he even tried escargot  Decided he much preferred dipping the bread in the garlic butter vs eating the actual snails themselves LMAO :D

My husband is a "picky" eater...he doesn't have an eating disorder, and is not a mal-adjusted adult.

Your daughter will find PLENTY to eat...no worries!

But he could be a mal-nurished adult.;)

Isn't it wonderful we so many disorder specialists on this board.

Our youngest is just the opposite of the OP's. He was eating off the adult menu a soon as he could. The more exotic (i.e. expensive) the better. :(

Are you sure you are not talking about my young men? The more $$$ the better.:eek::D

Since I'm the OP, I'm already worrying I'm a bad parent and just never noticed.

My younger daughter, 15, is like your son. She'll try the escargot, experiment with other foods and then rush off to the teen club before dessert.

Not at all! Don't listen to people about your parenting. So what if she is picky? I have 2 boys exactly like yours but opposite. My 15 YO will eat anything gourmet and expensive and my 13 YO is the pickiest eater. He always looks at the MDR menu, but then asks for pasta with butter, chicken fingers, etc. He checked out the kid's menu once, but was embarrassed to actually use it so he just orders what he wants.

Maybe your daughter might see one thing on the MDR menu she likes. Once my picky son noticed they had a dish with bacon, his favorite. He asked our waiter and next thing he knew an entire plate full of bacon was put in front of him! He was in his glory. I look at it like he is on vacation also and should enjoy whatever he wants to eat. And since it's my vacation also, at least I'm not the one who has to make him a separate meal!

Don't worry -- about any of it! In all of my cruises, I've never seen anyone (adult or child) starve to death. ;) There are so many food venues onboard, and so many choices, I'm sure that your DD will find something that she likes to eat.

Take it w/ a grain of salt! Unfortunately those type of comments are why I dont post a lot of questions or my reviews anymore. Too many unneccesary comments!

We've taken our 3 teenage sons on Celebrity before and they all had a great time and never went hungry! There's pretty much something for everyone! Even the picky eaters ;)

DH complained one night all teenager #2 has eaten is pizza, cheeseburgers., or icecream so far...I was like quite complaining at least you didnt have to cook it for them LOL The other two boys made up for the exotic stuff the other one didnt eat...twice over I'm sure!!

Your daughter will be able to find plenty of meals she will enjoy while on board. I find it incredibly rude for anyone to suugest that your daughter may have an eating disorder because she happens to be picky. They have never met her and you know her best. Don't let any message board "doctors" who read an article somewhere on the internet make you feel like a bad parent. Enjoy your vacation time with your family and doesn't matter if your daughter prefers noodles over escargot. To each their own!

Thank you all but I was being facetious about being a bad parent.

With burgers and smoothies and pizza and pasta, she'll do just fine.

It was just amusing to see her incredible relief last year at being able to choose chicken nuggets and mac and cheese from the kid's menu.

The MDR menu has a list of appetizers (generally four), and also a soup and salad section (two salads options and two soup options). The OP's picky eater may find that she can assemble an appealing meal from those sections, particularly if she enjoys shrimp cocktails, which are available every night.

Pay no attention to the rude posters insulting your lovely daughter. Some people have very sensitive palates (supertasters!)and as a result can't enjoy more "flavorful" foods until their 30s when their tastebuds have mellowed a bit. Surely you are a great mom!

We took our young children and their 25y/o Nanny on a cruise on the Constellation about a year ago. The kids preferred to order from the kids menu, and after a few days our Nanny asked if she could too (of course!!!). The waitstaff didn't even blink, and she was relieved to always be able to order chicken fingers if nothing on the menu that night appealed to her.

tl/dr- just ask for the kids menu no matter your age.

Enjoy your trip!

Our son has lived on pizza and hamburgers throughout asia and our daughter spaghetti. These are not typical asian dishes, but amazingly we could get them everywhere. Is not an eating disorder, they just like what they like & it made them happy. After all is a holiday and if they are you are happy - Yay!! They are now mid to late 20's and eat just about anything. It too will pass! Take no notice of the negative posts, their taste buds will change. If I had a dollar for every time someone said negative things about their diets, well X would see more of us! They will find plenty to eat. Cheers

Might be a late bloomer, my brother-in-law would only eat pb&j throughout high school. Still has to have it for lunch, but now he's into exotic foods for dinner.

So the O.P. comes on and asks a question out her "picky eater" and someone suggests that PERHAPS is might be a more serious issue - Arfid. At NO POINT did I see anyone suggest that the parents were anything but great. Having a child with an eating disorder does not make a parent bad. Sometimes those closest to the issue can't see it. I don't think the person who mentioned the eating disorder was out of line when mentioned as a cautionary - "hey just take a look."

Growing up - we didn't have "picky eaters" where I came from. You ate what your Mom cooked or you went hungry and she wasn't making but one meal - so no one was indulged by their preferences. I had a friend that developed Anorexia as a teen - up until then she was just a very picky eater. She had wonderful, loving parents. Sadly she died in her early 30's of heart failure.

An 18 yr old is about to head off to college where her peers might be more judgmental of her eating habits. I too would want to rule anything more serious than being picky.

Sometimes taste buds take years to develop and the adventure will come later. It's a great opportunity to try new things even asking for small portions of things to try out.

There is always plain things on the menu, pasta etc, putting sauces on the side

Once the wait staff know they will work with them and no issue getting the kids menu either

Hi, there will also be one or two items labeled "Vegetable" but it's actually their vegetarian choice :) It's usually some sort of very delicious looking pasta, don't be fooled by the description on the menu.

Have a great cruise. :)

Too bad she's not a bit more adventuresome! Either way, If all she likes is Salad & pasta there's plenty of that on board. Since Celebrity doesn't usually get a lot of kids(compared to Disney) I've not seen a child menu, but that doesn't meant it's not available. There still should be plenty of food for her to try. I'm sure she'll not starve by any means. As for me I always tried various things from childhood onwards. As A kid I actually liked my veggies more than steak. When we moved to New England I really took to seafood(and haven't looked back since!)The only thing I never liked (and still really don't)is Lamb. Just never liked the flavor.
