Yes, there is an upgrade fairy!

On board the Crown waiting to depart. We had booked an obstructed OV, and were fine with that. At check in, we were told we were in a Caribe balcony. I was sure there was some sort of mistake. Nope, we were upgraded at the last minute apparently. Hope our luggage (which had the old cabin #) and my coffee card catches up with us soon. We are beyond thrilled and still in shock. This is a great way to start a cruise.

That's a cool sailaway present. I don't know where your Caribe cabin is, but we had a Caribe balcony up front (C226) on the May 30 sailing and never felt any problem with ship movement. In fact we kind of like to feel it a bit.

Enjoy your cruise.

Thank you all. Weather has been perfect, so we have taken good advantage of balcony. Just about to dock in Juneau and sailing in for hours this morning was magical. We have pieced together the fate of previous occupant of our cabin(people next door are her friends). Sadly, she became too ill to travel and cancelled less than 48 hours before departure. We have no idea why we were chosen for upgrade, but can't stop smiling. Luggage caught up with us quickly. It's all good!

Is it typical for a cruise lines to ask you if you want to get a complimentary upgrade at the time of booking? I'm a first time cruiser and I wasn't sure if I should say yes. We currently have a balcony room booked mid ship. We chose this option because of the potential for motion sickness. We were asked if we would want to get upgraded to a mini-suite, if one should become available. Any thoughts?

I am not nearly as experienced as many here. My understanding is as follows.

If you absolutely do not want to move, have your TA Mark your reservation "no upgrade".

If you will only want an upgrade to a higher category (not within your current category) have reservation marked meta upgrade only.

Even with all of this, I have heard of cases where Princess still moved folks to places they did not want to be, though folks were sometimes able to go back to their original cabin.

We marked meta upgrade only, and did not find out about our good fortune until we were checking in at the pier. We were so surprised, that we thought it was a mistake. At present it seems that free upgrades are becoming increasingly rare.

Enjoy your cruise.
