Smoking: Do any cruise lines have unrestricted smoking

My husband is allergic to smoke so we try to avoid it. It closes his sinuses, makes him sneeze and he feels generally bad when around smoke. As we continue to try new cruise lines I'm wondering if any of them still allow smoking throughout the ship? If so, we will need to avoid using those lines.

One major exception is Holland America where they still allow anyone to smoke cigarettes and cigars on their balcony and still allow cigarette smoking in the casino (for players). There are also multiple places on the decks where one can find smokers. Because this line now attracts smokers (who are more restricted on most other lines) we recommend that anti-smoke folks avoid HAL.

Wow...if HAL is the one of the smokiest, we should be ok. On 2011 HAL Atlantic Adventurer the smoke wasn't that bad for him. We avoided the casino due to smoking (don't gamble much anyway) and we don't book a balcony room so smoking on the balcony next door isn't an issue. I don't recall seeing smokers on the deck in general, but I do remember there was specific smoking areas and we avoided those. Has the smoke gotten worse since 2011 on HAL?

Celebrity Azamara & Oceania have the most restrictive smoking policies I know of

Oceania has 1 small outdoor space you can avoid & 1 small indoor space partially enclosed

I think Azamara only has the small outdoor space

all lines permit it in some outdoor public areas and at least one indoor public area( typically the casino)

all lines have banned it INSIDE cabins and many have banned it on balconies.

avoiding it is simply learning where it is permitted and retrouting your travels to avoid it.

I think Celebrity has the most restrictive policy as their casino is smoke free

since 2011 many other lines have banned smoking on balconies, causing the heavy smokers to change lines to the ones that still permit it.

This link to the various smoking policies of various cruise line might be of assistance:

http://www.shipdetective.com/ships/smoking_policies.htm

There are some small errors, but generally this is pretty accurate. An example of an error: Celebrity does not allow smoking in ANY indoor area, while the site says in "designated INDOOR and outdoor areas".

all lines permit it in....... at least one indoor public area( typically the casino)

There are some lines that do not allow smoking in any indoor area. Celebrity is one.

No, that's not correct and although you stipulated Celebrity's casino is smoke-free (which it is), there is no indoor smoking anywhere on Celebrity. You can't lump all the lines together for that statement.

From the website Casino page:

"Smoking of any kind is not permitted in the casino. For your comfort, all Celebrity's casinos are now non-smoking. Smoking is allowed in designated outdoor areas only."

EDITED to add: SantaFeFan, apologies - I see we are saying the same thing, but I had already posted. You said it first. :)

I think it might be true more smokers come to HAL verandah cabins but seeing you don't book verandahs, OP, that is not an issue for you.

As to smoking around the ship, the only interior place it is allowed is Casino and only by those actively gambling and at aft pool area starboard side. It is no longer permitted on the wrap around deck (which is called different names on various classes of ships) though there is still some debate about 'vague' HAL language as to that deck.

Smoking on HAL has not 'gotten' worse but it most certainly is past time they banned verandah smoking as most other cruise lines have done.

BTW.... I hate being around second hand smoke and avoid it whenever possible. I am fed up with losing use of my verandah those times when there is a smoker next to me.

No problem. With the misinformation that is often posted here, it doesn't hurt to state the actual facts more than once. At least for people who still care about facts, that is. :D

I think it might be true more smokers come to HAL....

I heard recently that several local residents of a seaside city called the emergency line to report a cruise ship on fire approaching their port. Turns out it was just smoke from all the smokers out on their balconies to watch the docking approach. :D

HAL only allows active players in the casino to smoke. Yes and no.

Some people have figured out that they can smoke in the casino just by standing near a machine. Several times I have asked the casino supervisor to ask people to either stop smoking or gamble while they smoke. Sometimes the people are approached, sometimes they are not.
