Anthem os the Seas @ 4 critical patients

My guess is that this sailing has an unusually high percentage of the elderly

Just an FYI: Medical emergencies are not always associated with the elderly. If you check the range of ages of passengers airlifted from ships it's not going to be 80 plus always!

I don't think that was their point. The point is when you have a high elderly population, the likelihood of a medical issue occurring goes up, not that only elderly people get hurt/sick, etc.

This is making me a bit anxious. What are the odds of 4 emergencies at the same time?!?!?

If they are ill because of something on the ship it does. We sail tomorrow. and I'm not worried as in "oh no, I'll get sick". I'm worried as in "we have to take this ship out of service to clean her"

I am not sure what I am missing here, is there another thread that says these ill people all having the same illness? I have not seen anything that says there is a problem with this ship that would cause it to be pulled out of service. If they were going to pull the ship, they would start contacting people. Maybe you should contact your travel agent or the cruise line for additional information if you are that concerned.

I don't think you're missing anything. If you are I am too as I've seen nothing indicating that these are in any way related.

If the ship is at capacity, you're talking 4900 people - but for argument's sake we'll go with 4180, which is all cabins at double occupancy. 4 passengers is LESS than 1% of the ship's population. Even if it WERE Nero or something similar, that number isn't close to what the requirement for quarantining the ship would be.

It is FAR more likely that these are 4 completely unrelated and separate emergencies.

No, nothing indicating they are connected. I am asking out loud the likelihood tht4 separate passengers all would become critically I'll to the point of needing ship re- routing all at exactly the same time. Seems unlikely it is a coincidence. But I am just speculating.

Do you think that every ship that goes out has even one emergency of a critically ill patient? I'd say it's rare even four there to be one on a cruise much less 4

We were on Radiance in February. 33 night circumnavigation cruise around Australia/New Zealand. An ambulance met the ship at every port and twice the ship had to briefly alter course for a boat to come out to our ship to transfer an ill patient.

On another cruise an announcement was made for a blood donation. That person was airlifted off the ship.

A cruise ship is like a small city. Unfortunately illness and injury can happen anywhere.

Anthem is not being re-routed. She's coming into port early.

There is still nothing that has been said that indicates that the 4 critical cases are even connected.

I'd be willing to bet that there are multiple medical emergencies in small communities all the time. And in reality, a ship - especially one as large as this one - IS a small community.

Illnesses and injuries happen more than you think. Freedom returned to Port Canaveral within a short time of sailing, either two or three weeks in a row a few months ago. On a Jewel cruise a few years ago, we were met in two ports of call by ambulances for sick or injured people. On that same cruise, we heard 8 emergency calls.

Stuff happens, you never know when or where. Just yesterday, I had to call 911 because of an elderly man who was having problems breathing. I was loading my car at BJ's and I kept hearing someone beeping their horn. Just a short, beep, beep, but they did it a bunch of times. I thought it was a kid playing but when I looked, the man was waving at me. When I went to his door, you could see how labored his breathing was and he could barely get his phone number out. I called his wife, who sent their daughter but I also told them I was calling 911. Poor man had COPD and needed his nebulizer which was in the backseat but I didn't know that until his daughter arrived. He ended up going out in the ambulance though since he hadn't improved much after a treatment.

Due to timing' date=' I'm more inclined to believe in a related cause. We hope those involved recover quickly.[/quote']

Due to the size of the ship, if it was something threatening of future travel, I would expect FAR more people than FOUR to be ill.

As far as critical things that can happen, let's see...

* appendicitis

* gall bladder attack

* cardiac issues

* severe allergic reaction

* stroke

* a fall inside a cabin resulting in broken bones and/or severe concussion

* issues resulting from pre-existing conditions

And those are just the ones off the top of my head.

But if it's going to bother you that FOUR out of like FOUR THOUSAND people have medical emergencies, by all means, cancel your cruise and/or spread panic.

Alpha, Alpha, Alpha was announced at 9:30 am this morning in a cabin on deck 7. There is no contagious bad illnesses going around. Lots of elderly folks though. I am sure the ship will be ready for those to get on. We will sleep at the port tonight. Just pray for the families as they go through this. We went super fast to get here tonight.

We were on Enchantment in June and arrived at port the evening before we were supposed to be there because of medical evacuation. Missed the movement of the ship as we slept but totally understood the need to arrive early. I'm sure it saved some people a LOT of money since the casino was closed!! :)

I think you're on to something there.

It's probably something they ate.

Now it's up to you to figure out just what it was that they ate. :rolleyes:

Enjoy your cruise!!!

You are welcome to your opinion as far as 4/4000, and I am welcome to my opinion as to timing. At this point, we are both guessing.

You are spreading unsubstantiated optimism. :)

Anyone on board know if there is a group on the ship that need dialysis, or any related illness such as kidney failure, diabetes, etc? We have been on cruises where there were groups that had pre-existing conditions. If that is the case, it would be highly possible for four people to be critically ill.

We were on one cruise, and every port there was an ambulance waiting for the ship to arrive. At one port, two people were taken off ill. So it is not unexpected.

I understand the need. But I am still thinking it is unlikely there would be 4 unrelated medical emergencies all at exactly the same time on a ship. We'll see.

Agreed ... theres something very fishy going on here.
