Sounds like new crew ...maybe they are getting some trained for the Sirena coming online

I seem to remember reading that when Oceania contracts run out with Apollo they would be hiring inhouse or maybe I was dreaming this ...anyone heard this also??

 

I hope this crew is not the beginning of things to come :eek:

 

Usually the Apollo trained crew are very good

Although the following was posted 3 days ago (December 17th) I found this on the 12/12 RC.

 

Everything normal on Riviera. Food wonderful. ...

 

Not even a hint of sickness. Couldn't be better. Haven't smelled or encountered any cleaning residue on the walls etc. :)

 

I am trying to keep positive about this cruise! :)

There were a lot of new crew that came on at Barcelona, that was part of our problem with service. I think we've covered that previously though. I think the service was suffering due to that more than the Noro outbreak. There were a lot of workers that either didn't know what to do, or weren't used to the way Riviera operated.

I guess having new crew that may have not worked on Oceania before or any ship maybe would certainly make a big difference

Just because I was on. don't put all the blame on the "new" crew.

 

Some of our stellar service that we highlighted on our survey were from new crew. One wine steward from Crystal. Sebastian in Jacques ran a restaurant before and it was his first cruise. He was amazing.

 

Any of the really good servers that we discovered and talked to were all new to the ship!

Sorry if you misinterpreted my comments

Some may have been new to your cruise but maybe not new to Oceania, some crew prefer the R-ships & try not to get assigned to the O class ships ;)

Just like other lines they may be coming back from their time off, new hires from other lines or they may have been new to cruise ships

 

We have met many crew that have never set foot on a cruise ship before, just like any job some are good some are not

I thought I understood you - but to clarify, the crew I was talking about were new to Oceania. Not just to this ship but to Oceania. Some had transferred from other cruise lines and some were land based prior.

 

Good service is always a delight so we asked and they were all new.

 

 

it doesn't mean all the new ones were good of course, but from our experience, some of the new ones could teach some of the others a few things. Just our experience though.

I've followed this thread and really appreciate all of your posts from the cruises on Oceania

 

I typically lurk on this board and a few others. I am a frequent and loyal Crystal Cruiser and do most of my posting on that board. Do you remember the name of the wine steward from Crystal?

 

Finally, I too have been on a ship that had a Noro breakout. It occurred while I was on the Crystal Symphony in 2013. Anyone can check this out on the CDC website. While I personally did not get the virus, I know many that did, both passengers and crew. I must tell you that the crew and staff on that cruise were phenomenal in communicating with all passenger very early on and took all the correct procedures and protocols that are expected. There were quite a few crew that got sick or had to be quarantined as a precaution just like the passengers. For those that had symptoms or went to the Medical Center, there was no charge. In addition, any passenger that was quarantined received compensation on a per diem basis.

 

Bottom line, Crystal handled the Noro the way it should be handled and I am so surprised to read how Oceania has handled the situation on multiple cruises aboard the Riviera.

 

Again, thanks for all of your updates and thoughts.

Her name was Cathy (sp?)

 

She was superb, exactly the service that O states in their brochure ( if not better) and if they could clone about 50 of her, life would be good.

 

My other two Noro cruises on HAL were similar to yours. Having been through it before, my eyes were truly opened on this cruise.

The laundries are open, salt and pepper shakers have reappeared, (they have been available on request) and we can now serve ourselves rolls. ;)

 

I hope all this bodes well for those boarding in Miami in a few days. I know many of you have been following our comments here.

 

The average age of passengers on this cruise has been reported as 70-80. I'd judge this to be accurate. There are lots of canes, walkers, a few scooters, and people with mobility problems. (This is not a condemnation, just a report.)

 

I've seen five children of various ages. The number of people who come up to Horizons to listen to music or to dance after the 9:45 show is limited.

 

I haven't encountered the service problems others have mentioned. This doesn't mean that I am challenging their experiences. It's just that it hasn't been our experience. Our cabin attendants have kept our cabin spotlessly clean and supplied with everything we've needed.

 

Service in Toscana tonight was frantic. Wait staff could have used roller skates; they were racing around the room. The room has a low ceiling and the noise level was difficult to deal with. Our best dining experiences were in Jacques.

 

I hope all of you boarding soon have a great time.

It sounds like things are slowly returning to "normal" and that you are enjoying yourself - good news all around.

The demographic is fairly typical for a Carib cruise IME - many older people that don't want to fly to Asia, Africa or even Europe any longer.

Yes, absolutely. I can't imagine being in my 30's and booking an Oceania Caribbean cruise based on the pictures in the brochure - and finding out that I was sailing with my grandparents and all their friends. (I fit into the grandparent category.)

Do you mean in the top suites ?

No DVD's in the other cabins

DVD players are built in to the TV in the A cabins & below ...have not been in the other cabin Cat

We are enjoying our last day on board and it's a beautiful day. Decided to try room service and I had the best club sandwich I ever ate. Wish I had tried this sooner.

Love the sea days. Life is good.

Glad things are back to normal on the ship. Good to know about the club sandwich. Will try it in February. :):):)
