Disembarkation in Fort Lauderdale

Hi,

We will be sailing on Nieuw Amsterdam (HAL) from Port Everglades from october 23th. Ship will arrive back in Lauderdale on october 30th at 7 am. Our flight home from Fort Lauderdale airport (via Newark to Brussels) is scheduled for 1.30 pm. Does that give us enough time to get the plane in time? What's the ultimate check-in time? Is this to be considered as a domestic or an international flight?

Thanks in advance for any advice you might might be able to give!

The last time I flew out of Ft Lauderdale after a cruise, the airport was a zoo! With that said, some airlines there will not check you through until 2 hours before your flight. This I know, because we had an evening flight home, and had to hang in an overcrowded check in area just waiting for the 2 hour time frame. I believe once you fill out all your debarkation info, the cruise line will give you an appropriate time to disembark, and make your flight.

Welcome to Cruise Critic.

You should have no problem making that flight. The airport is around 10 minutes from the cruise terminal. Taxi is $15 to $20. I'd arrange to be off the ship by 9:30am to give you ample time to get though customs.

It is only a 10 or 15 minute ride to the airport, so you will have more than enough time to get there. As others have said you will almost certainly have too much time.

The flight from FLL to Newark will be a domestic flight. The Newark to Brussels leg will be international.

Are you flying United? If so, consider using HAL's Luggage Direct program. Its $20 per person and is really good value for international flights. HAL will check you in, issue your boarding pass and transfer your baggage for you. Leave your baggage outside your stateroom on the last night and next time you see it will be on the carousel at BRU :D

Unless there is some unexpected event, you should be okay. Seeing you stop in Newark, you may not need the three hours prior to check in for International Flight.

The airport is about 10 minutes from Port Everglades by taxi.... depending on traffic lights and traffic.

Request earliest disembarkation number/letter from front office on your ship. Explain you have an international flight.

Hope you enjoy Nieuw Amsterdam.

Travel safely.

OP is flying to Brussels.

Are you sure they do luggage direct for European flights.... especially for one with a stop in Newark? I wouldn't risk luggage being transferred efficiently if they even offer it.

As someone above said, luggage direct is the way to go. We just returned from FLL last week and found that the airline counter will not accept luggage more than 2-3 hours before your flight, but we were able to drop our luggage with the curb side Sky Cap at 10:00 am for a 6:45 jet blue flight. Sky Caps at the curb charge $2.00 per bag and issue you your boarding pass and they have luggage storage for $7.00 per bag for your carryon's. They have a free Sun Tolley that runs from the airport to river walk every hour on the hour that picks up at terminal 1,2, and 3.. if you need to kill some time. happy cruising

Hu luxil, finally, a fellow Belgian member :)

I've taken a 1.30pm flight before, but I prefer to stay the night in FLL.

But you should be fine.

You should treat this as a domestic flight. Your bags will be checked through, and you'll be able to obtain both boarding passes (FLL-EWR & EWR-BRU) at FLL, if all is issued as 1 ticket.

When you arrive 2 hours before your flight, you should be fine.

FLL can be a real zoo, specially at days when there's quite some ships in port, but the airport is a short taxi/shuttle ride away from the airport (about 10-15 min.)

FLL isn't too big either, but plan time well ahead of time because of the mass crowds.

Your itinerary leaves me to believe you'll be flying United on both legs. If that's the case, you'll be fine when it comes to your bags and boarding cards and will be able to check in even before the 2 hour mark. The latest you'll be need to check your bags with UA will be 45 minutes before departure time at FLL.

Enjoy your cruise and the beautiful Fort Lauderdale.

Can OP do luggage direct with his itinerary? FLL to Newark to Brussels?

Yes, International flights are no problem as long as the international leg is the same day as disembarking the ship. It is dependant on the airline. Only US carriers can be used, no BA, Virgin Atlantic etc.

I have done it several times and no problems with United via EWR or (what was..) US via Philadelphia.
