I can use points to book the Sheraton Old San Juan for the one night we are arriving prior to departing on our Carnival cruise out of San Juan. A friend is telling us this is an awful part of Old San Juan and do not stay at this hotel. The reviews are Trip Advisor are great to so-so to bad. All over the board in other words. However, it doesn't require a two-night stay and seems to be very convenient to touring Old San Juan. Any input appreciated!

1. Is it in a bad part of Old San Juan?

2. Is it too far from the attractions of Old San Juan where we adults and our kids (14, 12, 6) will be walking?

If we don't stay here, I'm afraid we will spend a lot of $ and time taking cabs back and forth from another hotel so we can tour Old San Juan and get to the cruise terminal.

Thanks for your help!

My family of four stayed there twice ... one night prior to our cruise in 2005 and 2009. We loved being in Old San Juan ... and it was so convenient to walk to the cruise ship. And perfect for walking around Old San Juan, as well. The only thing that we heard is to not go out at night ... but with a bar and casino in the hotel, we were happy.

My wife and myself have stayed here and found it great! From the rooftop where pool is located you have great view of San Juan! You are just short walk in to Old San Juan. There is a trolley that you can take to El Moro! I walked around during the day and night and did not feel like it was dangerous! I think Carnival docks across road from this hotel!

Love this hotel. It is very fun to see the ships docked in front of your room. There is a CVS just down the road, and there are lots of things in good walking distance. If anyone does not walk hills well, there is a free trolley that goes around the city. We did not eat at the hotel. There is a Subway just down and across the street, as well as the ferry across the harbor to the taxis to the Barcardi Rum factory.

I have never stayed there. But, their location in relation to the cruise ship piers is perfect. I did not see anything in the area that would deter me from staying there. And, I did a quite a bit of walking in the area.

Interested in Maritime history? Not far from the hotel, there is a very interesting Maritime Museum. It is small, but well done, I thought.

It's fine. The only thing I've noticed bad about the hotel in two stays is a musty odor. The location is excellent. My sister and I walked around OSJ even at night. South Fortaleza is a mecca of restaurants and bars, especially at night. OSJ is only about 7 square blocks so everything is accessible. Even I, with some minor mobility issues, can get around. The only place I'd strongly recommend you avoid is called La Perla. It's tucked down near the ocean between the two forts. So if you see the ocean, don't go downhill. If you see the bay, downhill is fine.

For our upcoming May cruise out of San Juan we could have stayed anywhere...but opted for the Sheraton Old San Juan for our two pre-cruise days....We've day ported in San Juan before and knew that the location of this hotel was where we wanted to stay..close in to the town and no need for taxi's taking us back-n-forth.

Thanks everyone for your input.

We are also staying a couple days afterwards - won't be staying in Old San Juan. Thinking about visiting the rainforest, etc.

If any one has recommendations for a budget friendly beach hotel outside San Juan, would appreciate them!

:)

If you want out of San Juan for the beach stay, look at Rincon or Luquillo or Fajardo for places. Luquillo or Fajardo will get you nearer to the El Yunque National Park (aka "the rainforest"). I've stayed at the Wyndham Rio Mar (when it was a Westin) and have a stay coming up at The St. Regis Bahia Beach. While I'd recommend them, they are not in the "budget friendly" category, I'm afraid ;) A co-worker is from Rincon - says it's a friendly surfer town. I'm going to spend some time there, too...

We went in October and were quite surprised by the closing. They were in the middle of remodeling, putting in shops instead. Heard new owners were anti gambling but that may just be rumor

This is apparently true.
