trrn2016 Posted March 23, 2016 #1 Share Posted March 23, 2016 I am going on my first cruise next month. What would I need cash for if everything on the boat is charged? I know private excursions want cash but anything else? How do you pay for gambling and how are you paid for your winnings??? Thanks so much!! Big_G Posted March 24, 2016 #4 Share Posted March 24, 2016 We make sure we bring a bunch of ones in case we want to tip the bartenders extra and we always use cash in ports.
R_i_c_h Posted March 24, 2016 #5 Share Posted March 24, 2016 Also think about what you want to buy on shore besides excursions. Beach chairs, drinks, souvenirs, cabs, etc. I usually carry enough cash for everything I want to do on shore, save bigger purchases like jewelry or electronics. -Rich
MikeBTN Posted March 24, 2016 #6 Share Posted March 24, 2016 I prefer to bring cash for shore shopping. Cabs, busses, etc also generally require cash. Also as others have mentioned I bring a stack of singles for additional tipping on-board, although you can do that with your Sea Pass card - even if you have a drink package you have the ability to tip on the receipt you sign. Typically I'll bring $100 in ones, $100 in 5s & 10s, and a few hundred in $20s to be safe. Its usually way too much, but better safe than sorry. Langley Cruisers Posted March 24, 2016 #7 Share Posted March 24, 2016 Bills in small denominations can be used for tipping the porters at the pier (we tip $2 per bag and round up), and a cash tip for Room Service delivery (a few dollars, depending on the size of the order). Love PalmTrees Posted March 24, 2016 #8 Share Posted March 24, 2016 Also helpful to have lots of smaller bills, ones and fives, to pay taxi drivers, souvenier vendors, restaurants in exact amount. Otherwise you may end up with a pocketful foreign coins, which no one seems to want to exchange. We have also had taxi drivers tell us they did not have change for a bigger bill, for example. I don't mind giving a bigger tip, but within reason of course.
tserface Posted March 24, 2016 #9 Share Posted March 24, 2016 There's also an ATM. It costs something like a $6 fee to use it, but that's not too bad considering you are on a ship. We don't mind paying the slight fee for the convenience of not having to carry as much cash along with us. We bring small bills like $1's and $5's and a few larger. You can often get change from the Guest Relations desk as well if they have it. Tom

tserface Posted March 24, 2016 #11 Share Posted March 24, 2016 That's a good idea. We try to steer clear of the casino because of the smoke smell. Off subject, but that's one of the pluses on Celebrity. No smoking in casino :) Tom We also get change at the casino from time to time.

Not that I would be spending time in the casino, but on some Royal ships, the centrum acts as a casino smoke distribution system.

Ashland Posted March 24, 2016 #14 Share Posted March 24, 2016 We also get change at the casino from time to time. We have found that the cashier in the casino will limit the change they will give out....Easier to get the amount and denominations you want at guest services. Rare Keith1010 Posted March 24, 2016 #15 Share Posted March 24, 2016 Also have a little cash for room service tips and as you noted private excursions and small purchases and also tips for porters, taxi fare, etc. Have a great time. Keith

I agree, we usually go to the casino only if the line at GS is really long.
cb at sea Posted March 24, 2016 #17 Share Posted March 24, 2016 You can "break down" larger bills on the ship...larger bills are easier to carry than, say, $100 in ones!!!
cruiseguy1016 Posted March 24, 2016 #18 Share Posted March 24, 2016 Also, think beyond the cruise portion of your vacation. Depending on your travel plans, you'll need cash to tip the porters at the airport, cash tips for your hotel room attendant, cash for the taxi ride to and from the pier, cash tips for the porters at the pier. Off the ship in port you may find you want to buy a bottle of water, something to eat or that "must have" souvenir trinket to bring home. Most of these things are small ticket items but when you add everything up.....
