I agree 18% is high for drink prices and even after you covert our Canada Money to usa money we lose almost 25 cents on the dollar.

 

So normally the only time I will tip extra on a drink for example is if we are at the theatre or aqua theatre etc. If I walk up to a bar and order a drink I very rarely trip extra.

Which is just plain wrong of the bar staff if they give you better service. I have paid my 18% and expect to get exactly the same service as anyone else who has paid. If it starts getting into "I tip more than you so I get better service" then I will be complaining to management.

 

Too bad if you don't like it but that's the way it works.

Husband had an issue at the pool bar on the freedom of the seas when he bought a beer, the bartender pointed to the spot for the extra tip as if was expecting on top of the 18%. In labadee as the other poster stated we got push back not giving a tip for the lounger we were told all you need is your sea pass. We did feel bad in that instance and bring cash next time. We did tip extra the wait staff on room steward in cash for there excellent service. If haven't researched it enough makes me wonder if bartender tips are pooled vs per actual bar. If I got grief would result no extra tip and a note to guest service for that behavior.

 

I just get my own chairs in Labadee. No need to tip myself then. ;)

I never pre-tip, never tip per drink. (MIGHT tip last day).

 

Always try and be polite and friendly to the staff.

 

Always seem to get that great service some think their $$$$ get them. Never have to wait, have waiters start pouring as I approach, have my drink sitting at my table when I arrive (if traditional seating) or soon after if anytime, have staff say to other staff He will want ...

these people work long hard hours and are away from home 7 to 9 months at a time cash in a hand for good nice service is no problem are you could give it away to a slot machines

We had an interesting experience recently on the Grandeur. We noticed an odd $1 charge from the casino bar. We had purchased nothing from the casino bar, had the soda package and we're refilling our cups from the freestyle machine. We had however purchased 2 drinks in the theater the night before from one of the worst servers I've ever seen on a ship...you practically had to trip her as she ran by saying "bar drinks" on her way past to catch her attention. Anyway, we would not have stood in line to question this odd, random $1 charge but I had to go to guest services about something else so while I was there I said to the man that we had an odd charge. He asked if we had added a tip and I said no. When he looked up the receipt there was $1.00 written in on the tip line for that particular server that neither my husband nor I had written in. The ended up taking it off but I've wondered since how many times that woman has done that thinking people won't question a $1 charge. From now on we will draw a line through the tip line unless we are leaving an extra tip!

But once you open your mouth all the bartenders and waiters know that you’re an Ausie - they'll be making up those 'lost extra tips' on volume!:D

The lounger tipping relates to Labadee, one of RCI's private destinations/beaches. When you disembark, all you need is your sea-pass, however when you get to the beach the loungers are all stacked up. The local Haitians will set them out for you but will expect a tip. As the food/drink is provided by RCI and/or chargeable to your SEAPASS card, we left our cash in the cabin. We felt so bad one of us walked back to the ship to get some money to tip the guy that had set out our sun beds.

 

As we have not visited Labadee for a while, this may have changed......

I think we're talking about a little more than $1; however when I get my diamond beverages in the evening, I always make it a habit of going to the same bar and tell the server upfront to give me a receipt so I can add a tip and I usually give them $1 per beverage - not a lot, but I rarely notice others getting the free drinks tipping. For doubters, you'd be amazed how quickly they make sure I get served when they see me coming even if the bar is packed.

 

And being pleasant to them also helps.

Then its the people that give $2 that get special treatment. When everyone gives $2, then its the ones that give $5.

 

I guess the people that tip for preferential treatment should be happy there are people that tip 0.0.

I have no issues with tipping, but I do think the automatic gratuity on drinks is a tricky subject. If I order a special drink (like a mixed drink, or a frozen drink) then I'll toss another buck or two on top of the total. 18% to hand me a bottle of water seems out of line honestly. Doesn't matter since I can't do anything about it!

 

I always prepay my gratuities and I always give our room attendant anywhere from $50 - $100 as soon as we board. I'm an ice freak and always want ice in my room so I ask them to keep it full all week. Never had an issue.

I'm so glad I live in a country where we don't tip bar staff and instead pay them a proper wage.

To each his own, just don't expect to great bar service in the US without tipping. Or, speaking of immoral, same concept at strip clubs.
