Chanakaab is nice and easy to do on your own. You can save a couple of dollars by getting tickets online first, then take a taxi there.

We did a dune buggy tour that included snorkeling, (not the best), scenic stops, bbq lunch on beach, etc. It was a lot of fun.

We've also gone to Paradise Beach; at least back then it was free if you bought a certain amount of food. Again, take a taxi there.

The ruins on the mainland (Tulum and Chichen Itza) are great but really not fun from the island--ferry can be quite rough, long, hot, tiring day and not enough time at the ruins. Chichen Itza may have to be done either through the cruise line or by plane.

All of our tours were done independently because we don't like most cruise line tours.
