Celebrity Cruises to Modernize All Cabins and Suites Across Fleet and Add New Sundeck

I'm not a fan of the minimalist design approach. In my opinion, function should always be the most important part of good design, not a room that just looks good. Cruisers want comfortable furniture and storage space. What good is that desk and chair design with a mirror that is so high you can't see to blow dry or flat iron your hair when sitting in the chair? The bathroom outlets generally can't be used for those functions. Also agree with other comments about open shelf space - just not practical. Nightstands that you can't even fit a magazine in. I already bring collapsible fabric bins and a shoe bag for storage on S class ships because of the lack of storage space.

And you can be cured by moving to Seabourn or Regent. Public spaces should be kept public.

Thanks for the suggestion but I do enjoy sailing on Celebrity. Sometimes in suites and sometimes not. I am just amused by the chatter every time Celebrity makes any type of positive announcement - in this case saying they are upgrading all cabins- that it turns into suite bashing here pretty quickly by some. Suite envy. Public spaces are enjoyed by all passengers including suite passengers. Should they be kept public forever just because you say so? Celebrity is a business not a public institution. They need to continuously change to respond to their competitor's ships just like any other business. They will create suite-only areas like announced on Edge because they will sell that space for a lot more profit. That is not meant to be offensive to you- just a reflection of their business drivers.

Hi Arno - HAL did finally listen after years of being behind the times and ban smoking from their balconies. They still do allow smoking in most of their casinos. Some day they'll understand that 80% of their guests also have money to spend if they're not gagging in the process.

Yes HAL did make changes to their smoking policy. You cant smoke in your cabin or suite anymore, Oh but you can vape in your cabin or suite. Yes it is a step forward.

Holland America Line Smoking Policy

For the comfort of all guests, beginning with sailings departing in 2017, all staterooms (cabins) including stateroom verandahs, showrooms and most other indoor areas are designated non-smoking. Smoking is also permitted on certain other designated, outside decks. The designated smoking areas for all ships are as follows unless otherwise noted.

  • Casino - Designated areas for active slot players, excluding the ms Oosterdam and ms Eurodam which are nonsmoking
  • Oak Room on ms Noordam only, including cigars and pipes.
  • Sea View (Retreat) Bar/Pool on designated side of the ship
  • Sun Bar on ms Koningsdam and ms Nieuw Statendam only
  • Sports Deck in designated areas only

Cigar and pipe smoking is not allowed anywhere inside the ship, with the exception of the Oak Room on the ms Noordam; it is only permitted on the outside decks where smoking is otherwise allowed. Electronic cigarettes and vaping devices are permitted in staterooms but are not permitted on stateroom verandahs. These devices may be used in all designated smoking areas listed above. Any guest who smokes inside staterooms in violation of our policy will be charged a US$250 cleaning fee per day of violation.

Sailing in a suite on Celebrity is how we choose to spend our vacation dollars. We have friends who choose to take 8 or more land trips a year. We are quite happy taking one, very occasionally 2, trip a year and appreciate everything Celebrity does to make our trip memorable.

Don't have enough experience with X to judge all the issues, but on the Millie's trans-pacific we really missed the port guides/maps and info we got on our many HAL cruises along with the end-of-cruise cruise log. But updating the aft cabins on Millie is a good idea so long as it is not just the aft suites that get upgrades.

The best news for me in all of this is that Celebrity apparently is planning to retain the "M" Class ships rather than sell them off as the Edge class ships are introduced. We just like the size and feel of the "M" class. Hopefully this means Celebrity may be adding West coast itineraries as well.

If "X" is truly going to hang onto M-class, rather than sell them off, I'd love to see at least one M-class ship devoted to longer, more global itineraries. Or even an annual World Cruise each Winter (available in segments).

I'm retiring mid-2018 and am ready to start shopping for longer and more exciting itineraries than Celebrity currently offers. And I doubt I'm the only one in that position.....

I was curious what the Cashmere Mattresses and Bedding Collection was, so I did an online search, and found these two interesting websites.

Testing a $50,000 Mattress

HEATHERED COTTON-CASHMERE BEDDING COLLECTION

Wow !

11,579 of these might be a little costly.

Not if they're like those Kobe Beef Hamburgers at the Top Deck fiasco.

I try and look at the positive. I think it is great that they are updating cabins. I like the idea of The Retreat. The more clean look in the cabins this what the Millennials seem to like. I'm from the baby boomers era. The only companies or people interested in me are doctors, over 55 living communities, assisted living and cemeteries. Celebrity should be more interested in our children and grand children. As this changes are not starting to 2019 and will be rolled in over time in dry dock. I do think that some of the cruisers bring why to much luggage. So you might see me in the same polo 3 times in 14 days:eek:.

The M class cabins and suites need a major overhaul. If the Ocean View Cafe is like the Solstice class ships, that would be great. The regular cabins could use the cabinets above the bed for additional storage as well as the major overhaul, including the bathrooms.

Good news. We are regular Celebrity cruisers and this August, rather then go on the Summit to Bermuda, will sail on Royal's Adventure of the Seas for a change of itinerary and a new experience. The Summit sky suites need work. We will be in a suite on the AOS- so I hope the accommodations are great!

We did Adventure of the Seas last year and really enjoyed it. Our group loved the promenade rather than the atrium. Our next cruise is on Reflection - looking forward to going back aot Celebrity. I am sure you will enjoy AOS!

So they are taking away significant current public space, including the lawn on the S class, to make private space for suite guests.

I see us cruising less and less and taking more land vacations.

If they make the lawn a private deck for Suites alle other guests can no longer walk outside from the front to the back of the ship. Such restrictions and significantly less public space on the open decks would make the ship unattractive for me who usually books just a balcony room.

For those of us with an allergy to wool this is such a bad idea.

Fortunately there is significant choice in cruise service providers so Celebrity is just one to choose from.

For the recent posters who are concerned about trending loss of public space on Celebrity ships, declining service levels, cheapening of food, constant attempts to upcharge, harassing guests on board to purchase, fixation on suites etc - solution - try Oceania.

After sailing on Celebrity from 1992 to 2015, just off Oceania Marina.

Oceania is what Celebrity used to be and then some - inclusive, not fixated on booze, large cabins with plenty of storage, outstanding included theme restaurants, food quality out of this world, amazing service beyond words, ships designed with views to the sea inside and outside.

Everything I wanted and nothing I did not.

Glad I looked beyond Celebrity to experience other cruise offerings.

Met many first time Oceania guests who were former Celebrity patrons - many, many, many. We all had the same opinion on the "new" Celebrity and we all moved our cruise $ away from Celebrity.

With the many changes in Celebrity and the industry in general, reducing loyalty to a service provider can open up opportunity.

Every consumer has a choice.

Happy sailing

Oh oh, dislike! (n)

When a new suite retreat sundeck is due to be rolled out on all ships, that means for sure that some of the public deck space will be removed... :(

I am sure the front sundecks will be transformed into that particular suite-only-deck, and let's see, maybe they also take the observation lounges in the front of the ship from the public passengers, and turn it into a suite lounge...

After the new extra-cost burger bar, and the charging for sushi, this is the next step into nickle and diming.

The standard "mother" cruise line RCI provides more value for money so...

s - Not sure that I Am aware of any cruise line, of note and which I would sail on in the same category, does not have a .nickling and diming as not only stated by you yet countless others when these types of discussions arise.

Some of us do not want to pay more for the current product as delivered, some of us would not mind an increase in cost to cover 'all the extras', some of us want to pay less and not include 'some of the extras' already included or perceived as being charged or supported and not used by them...

What do you recommend to bridge this gap or leave it behind?

bon voyage

But I do:

------------------------

How does Celebrity nickle and dime?

-Charging for sushi items (and n some ships also for burgers) that used to be free --> AT OceanView those sushi stations are now replaced by lower fare pizza and pasta items...

-"Giving" extra-cost drinks into your hands during sailaway events without having the time to say "no"

-Soon removing public deck space in favor of suite guests, ju to create more and more money again ("Celebrity Revolution")

-"A taste of film experience" - surely a nice event, but just at extra-costs again

-Lowering public deck space at Lawn Club by adding expensive Cabanas

-Reducing food portions at Main DIning Room

s - I can understand how some consider charging for sushi, which was once at no additional charge in the OVC, my point of view is that they should use the extra space in the buffet for more vegan items, then again realizing that not more than 5% of passengers on any given sailings will want this, no problem. I spent the $12 for freshly rolled vegan rolls on So5 and was quite happy with presentation and pricing, personally.

What is low fare about the pizza and pasta stations? Each time I made the opportunity to avail myself of these stations, they always accommodated my order and desires.

Not sure about the 'extra cost' drinks at sail away, never have encountered this at all. What types of drinks and where was this, in your experience?

Well, in terms of creating more space for suite guests most likely is in the interest of X's bottom line and what is the reason not to? Seeing that often times on the sailings I have been on, are usually fully or near fully booked. Your experience with this? After all, they are in business to satisfy their full paying guests who want such amenities. Not a suite guest, yet, but looking forward to it sometime soon. Having challenges with getting AQ or CN class on Edge... my next move up.

Taste of film experience, well, yes, here in the U.S. we pay to go to the films in movie houses or we can watch them on TV at home, pending on the type of service we have, cable for fee or over the air at no charge. We usually can watch how we want knowing the pending charge or not.

I do not think that the public space in impeded by cabanas in the LC area. I do not think there is any prohibition on the use of the lawn itself, just bring a blanket and sit out and enjoy... only the few cabanas cost. Have you tried that approach yet or you want a cabana with all of the trimmings at no charge?

Just in case you did not realize it, if one believes that the portions are small in the MDR, a request at the time of ordering can be for a larger or double portion of any item desired. Have you tried that, if this is an issue for you?

bon voyage

Add to the N & D list

Offers nothing at ports for customers to make their own way.

( It was one of the outstanding omissions for us, other lines have given maps, advice and pointed out worthwhile places to visit for guests making their own way in port)

a - Yes, this can be improved for sure. I keep forgetting to write this in on the survey when received after each sailing. I believe if more of us write this in, a remedy will be in place.

Although, I have never checked to see if the Concierge Desk or Tour Desk has these available, on the way off the ship would be best, even though quite often we have researched before hand, but this little extra may point out things we never thought of or found in planning.

bon voyage

t - thank you for this, I concur with these thoughts.

We understand that there are other lines which one can choose to sail which 'may be' more compatible with ones thoughts on use of space and amenity desires.

Another option could be, one can purchase enough stock in RCCI in order to have a sway or greater input on these decisions or changes.

Checked at Guest Relations desk twice, just for maps of port and got absolutely nothing. Never had anything like it river cruising or sea cruising.

I think the idea is that if they give you any information you are less likely to book tours with them. But all the other lines we have been on just wanted us to have good experiences, not just concerned about $$$$$
