Smoking policy enforcement

Very simple answers. No debate needed. Smokers will be in areas allowed....its only about 3 places...find out where they are and stay away. If you find a smoker on the balcony, complain and it will handled. There you have it.

Perfect answer. That's the long and short of it.

What 3 places? I know about designated smoking area out on pool deck, and smoking while playing in Casino. Not all ships have the CC and seems most go away after refurb.

I have not read this whole thread but understand your concerns. (Brother’s daughter has CF and brother is a research scientist - micro biologist working on the bacteria aspect of CF research. That being said, Celebrity Cruise lines is completely smoke free indoors and only has two outdoor areas for smoking. On our cruises we saw few to no smoking. There is not as much to do for the children/teens as on RC, but when we took our children and their families, everyone had a wonderful time.

One thing to keep in mind for the two with CF - a ship is like a big capsule and periodically there are nasty outbreaks of Noro and flu. As careful as I am, I did manage to get the flu while sailing in New Zealand.

Many many cruises and never had an issue with balcony smokers UNTIL our most recent cruise in early September. Smoking started prior to sail away and continued all cruise. I reported it to guest services as well as the cabin attendant ( in case it was from someone in her section), but that did not help. Most times, by the time GS answered the phone, the smoking session had stopped. Never figured out where the smoke was coming from. Even if I knew which cabin had the smoker, I wound never confront the passenger. I'll leave that up to ship security.

The worst was when we were at sea. The smoke seemed to be drawn to our open balcony door (even if opened just to go in or outside) and came right into the cabin! It was annoying but not at least not a medical issue for us.

In the OP's situation, I'll have to agree with others. If it is a life threatening issue I would try a ship with no smoking or a non balcony cabin. Or at least have the ones who must not be near smoke booked in an inside or OV cabin.

Good luck

Unfortunately, there is no requirement to play (while smoking) in the casino. Smokers just hang around machines smoking, often in small groups and often sitting at a machine with their back to the machine, so they can converse. They never use a table game seat, but most often use a machine seat.

The Compass even lists the casino as a smoking area. It is the only indoor smoking area on the ship.

Please do not suggest to play in the non smoking areas. There are different slot machines in the smoking/non smoking areas, and many have a preference regarding the type of machine they want to play. Unfortunately for me, the machine I like is in the smoking area.

OK - got that off my chest!

Thx

Looking for a picture I took of a Compass.

On some ships, compass says smoking is permitted while playing in the Casino.

I’ve not seen it enforced. Many smoke in the Casino when it is closed.

There’s no guarantee that they’ll stop the smoker.

Scary... because it's a heck of a fire hazard for someone to smoke on the balcony. If I called/reported and it continued I'd ask call again. To me there is no excuse. I'm sorry smokers, I'm not trying to be hateful, but I don't want to breathe it.

We have never experienced smokers on a balcony. If you call and they don't stop at least you can just close your balcony door. But, remember there are several smoking areas besides the casino. Specific areas of the pool deck and another outside deck.

How did so many people ever cruise and continue to cruise before these smoking bans?

I am a former smoker and I even used to smoke in inside cabins when it was permitted.

Staff and crew including officers are a mix of smokers and non smokers themselves just as in real life so that is possibly the reason every complaint of the slightest whiff of smoke from an open air balcony isnt taken with the utmost of seriousness the complainer wants it to be! You also have to look at just how minor the occasional balcony smoking infringement is when compared to confined cabin smoking which only attracts a " possible" cleaning fee and or a warning and then the reasons behind this.

Many people must believe that ships security or staff checking on smoking offenders after a complaint are also non smokers or staunch anti smokers?

How do people go with the soot and smoke that bellows out of the funnel onto decks and balconies during unfavorable winds?:D

My wife and I are making tentative plans for a 50th anniversary cruise, spring, 2020. We will bring DD, her DH and 3 grans. Two of our 3 grans have Cystic Fibrosis, an incurable, terminal genetic lung disease. Tobacco smoke is deadly for them. It could cause pneumonia and death. I am aware that RCI allows smoking in the casino. I want to know if they are on a balcony next to a smoker, will RCI guest relations put an end to it?

We will avoid the casino. The corkscrew water slide and climbing wall will be things that they will love. Celebrity does not have these, although they do have better smoking rules. I am diamond on RCI and can get discounts for both families, since I will be paying. I have only done 1 RCI cruise, and got Elite/Diamond on Celebrity.

I did a search on the boards with this question with zero results.

I am looking for information, not an argument with smokers. If an RCI rep reads this and wants to comment, please do!!

Thanks in advance to everyone.:)

First of all there is no guarantee to avoid smoke on the balcony. While the policy on this is very clear cut, reality is different and other pax will smoke on their balcony despite the rules and there is no consistent enforcement of the rules.

Having your question answered I´d like to point out something else you need to consider besides smokers.

With CF it´s not only tobacco smoke you need to be worried about. The exhaust from the ships funnel will contain some much worse stuff than a whiff of tobacco smoke on your balcony. It will not always be visible to you and you can´t always smell it, but it´s still there. One of the many is fine dust and it can be found on ships in higher amounts.

You are talking about the kids especially wanting to use the climbing wall. Well be aware this is most of the times very close to the funnel and in an area where the highest amounts of fine dust and other exhausts can be found.

On Oasis class these are in an area which is very prown to get high amounts of soot, so if the visible soot is there you will certainly breathe some other stuff as well.

I´m sorry but a cruise might not be the best place for them to be at all, and this has nothing to do with tobacco.

I was aware of the soot issue, and thought that aft cabins were most affected. Another thing to talk about with family. Thanks for mentioning this. Sea air is supposed to be good for them--salt content.

Let me begin by saying I'm a cigar smoker. I think there should be no smoking in any indoor venue except the dedicated cigar lounge which I think should be on every ship. On a recent cruise I asked the cruise director why they are building mega-ships and not putting cigar lounges on them and why are they removing cigar lounges in dry-docks. He told me it was a question of economics. The cigar lounges didn't produce enough revenue. I think this is complete and utter hogwash. When I do go into a cigar lounge I notice that everyone has a drink, even those not smoking. And what are they replacing the cigar lounges with? In the case of Adventure of the Seas they replaced it with a card and game room. Now there's a big revenue generator!

When you were allowed to smoke on your balcony I used to like to end the night with a smoke and drink out there. Once the ban went into effect I sadly confined my smoking to the designated areas. I don't know any cigar smoker that would break the rules and smoke out there. (Although I imagine some do) The last thing I want to do is bother a fellow cruiser with my cigar smoke. Also, if I'm in a designated area, I don't want to be bothered by anyone complaining about the smoke. If it bothers you, stay away from that area. I think most of your complaints are about cigarette smokers. I agree with you that cigarette smoke smells offensive. I also think that nothing smells better than the smell of a good cigar. A few things smell better, but a good cigar is right up there. (My opinion)

Also, have a little consideration for a cigarette smoker. It's not an easy thing to quit.

Well, that's my two cents. Flame on!

I'm the OP. No flames from me. We will stay away from smoking areas. My problem is with smokers who ignore the rules. I would appreciate casino being made no smoking.

Many of us feel the same way about the Casino . However, this question was brought up to MB on Presidents Cruise and Royal claims they lost 30% of Casino revenue when they experimented with non smoking on EN September 2016. I was on a 4 day during the test and it was wonderful with no smoke.

Let’s hope they look at this some more. I’m against most over reaching Government Regulations But would accept a US ban on all indoor smoking.

I personally would get an inside cabin or an ocean view in this situation. We had our first balcony in October. It seemed like every time we went out on our balcony someone was smoking on the balconies. We could not tell where it was coming from to report it but it was a constant issue. I would also look at the deck plans for smoking areas. There is more than the casino and the one side of the pool area. We saw a couple different areas on different decks outside that was marked as smoking areas

I took my 22 year old Daughter with Cystic Fibrosis on a cruise to the Mediterranean. With all of her CF Meds, nebulizers, CF Vest and compressor, refrig for insulin we qualified for an Accessible Cabin - we had a very large ocean view room. (Doctor note needed) I know smoke is not good for the grandchildren but let them enjoy the cruise and have fun, they deserve it - along with the other sibling and parents. I know there lives can be short and I learned in some situations that quality of life is just as important as quantity. Sea air is good for them and make sure they drink plenty of fluids and salty snacks - loved the lemonade and tea (Arnold Palmer).

Enjoy your cruise. Eileen
