tour bus rollover

This is so very sad. Thoughts and prayers with everyone affected. I was just sitting looking a tours to here and it’s the reason I came onto this board. Awful news.

It was a nice tour. We used https://thenativechoice.com. They were good, nice and cheap. The only issue with them

is they don't seem to have a contract with the port so it's a 15 minute walk from the port to their office. On the return,

it was weird that they can't even come close to the port to drop you off. I see taxis drop off people by the entrance of the port but not them. They must have pissed of people on the port and they are not allowed anywhere near the port.

When in Chachobben shopping for souvenirs, don't ever pay the first price they tell you. My wife was told $25 and she said $20 and they said yes right away without thinking. Be prepared to haggle for lower prices at the port as well.

Not so much the restaurants but souvenirs and massage places, you can haggle for a lower price.

Terrible tragedy. My thoughts and prayers are with all persons involved in this tour. My husband and I are booked on this same tour next week.

We are also booked on a dog sledding tour in Alaska next June and I discovered that one of the vehicles recently overturned and killed passengers. I know a person must try to not live in fear but it makes me nervous hearing such things.

Prayers to the families of those affected. I was just on the same tour last Thursday.

I hope the injured recover quickly.

Yes, definitely terrible news. Was it in fact the ship's excursion (as opposed to a private one)?

We're actually going to be in Costa Maya for the first time a little over a month from now, also doing a Native Choice tour mentioned by NYFirstTimeCruiser.

From what I read of a survivor of the crash, seat belts were tied under the seats. The two who sustained minor injuries had their seatbelts on. As I and my husband will be on this tour ourselves next week and to anyone else reading this tragic story, fasten those seat belts. They truly do save lives.

One of our Cruise Critic Family lost her brother and his wife.

Prayers and comfort to the family.

This was a shore excursion booked through Celebrity and RCCL.

(yes, they share)

Seat belts tied under the seats. Some untied them to use.

So very sad.

We cruise frequently and cannot help notice the safety standards in so many ports do not reflect anything close to those in the US. We see overcrowded boats on several islands or ports taking way too many onboard and from personal experience the life jackets so old I question if they would be of benefit. We have experienced being left behind on a rent your own boat tour; the engine gave out and we washed up on a sandbar. Finally someone noticed the boat count was off and returned to help us back to shore. We have come to check the tire treads when on van or bus tours. Some of these ports have hair pin turns and narrow winding roads. You need good traction.

In my opinion, cruiselines who have agents who contract with tour agents of all types have the responsibility to consider the safety features and practices of any company they work with.

Nothing can change the outcome of this tour and my heart goes out to all who lost their lives and those who loved them. This could be any of us who cruise and put faith in cruise lines to work with tour agents who place value on safety.

We must insist high standards from cruise lines in ensuring that safety is a priority.

Why would any company tie the seatbelts under the seats?

Although seat belts can save lives, even in America, seat belts are not required in most buses and many including most school buses do not even have seat belts.

The trip to those ruins is not a very long trip where drivers have to speed to get you back to the ship on time so I generally feel pretty safe with the drivers they use but I always pay close attention to the driver on any excursion I am on. So far I have not seen one that seemed sleepy or intoxicated or not paying attention but I will remain vigilant.

I have always been wary of longer excursions where we had to travel long distances and the driver had to rush to get us back to the ship on time.

I still feel safer on most of these excursions than I do on an American charter bus going to a casino when I read about those buses crashing with multiple casualties at least once a year.

What did you think of the tour? Did they say what caused the accident?

  • 2 weeks later...

Went by there last week. Our driver thought that the bus driver fell asleep. Road is straight with about three small turns in over an hour drive at 90km/hr. Really two lanes with shoulder but it is almost wide enough for a 4 lane highway. Quite smooth and boring. Trees on the sides are high enough to block most view. He speculated that injuries were due to no seat belts in bus and did ask us to use them in his van (Toucan Tours).

The accident shook the tour community as well as all of us here.
