Impressions of Oasis

We just got off a lovely 7 night western Caribbean cruise on oasis. Overall, we had a great time. My husband, I, and our 1 year old daughter also cruised a 3 night disney dream last month so that’s on my mind. A few impressions if you care to continue reading;

1) Disney blows away RCCL in terms of everything children- better nursery, better kids staff, more attention to kids in every way. On rccl we struggled to get proper food for the baby and sometimes had to beg for high chairs. That being said, is Disney worth the premium? I would say no.

2) I think RCCL’s food in the windjammer and MDR is overall perfectly delicious. No reason to spend more money on food that is only slightly better. On the last sea day there was a huge line for Johnny rockets- really? You don’t have this back home? Silly sheeple...

3) the crowd was an interesting mix. Tons of Brazilians and lots of other international folks. The Americans seemed overwhelmingly white, southern, and midwestern. Lots of unfortunate tattoos.

4) RCCL thrives on nickel and diming. They are always trying to sell you something- a drink card, a spa treatment, 50% of designer watches. I find it annoying.

5) smoking- really? In 2018 you can still smoke indoors? The casino was gross and the nasty smell wafted into the dining room entrance. They should make the entire boat smoke free.

6) labadee is lovely. Cozumel is Fine- went diving. Jamaica is... a disaster. I wish ships would stop going there and supporting their homophobia.

7) I think the boat looks good considering her age. There’s a lot to do and the entertainment is top notch.

Definitely a fun week- not sure It’s worth the $$$ but fun anyway.

Thanks for the comparison / review.

The reason there was a line for Johnny Rockets the last day was because everyone in a BW balcony gets a free meal there as a perk and they all left it until the last day to use it.

Seems like a good reason NOT to save our Johnny Rockets BW lunch for the last sea day.

We too did Disney and RCI as our daughter was growing up.

Disney cost so much more, but yes it is worth every cent.

The earlier years when she was 10ish, Disney was the best deal in town, yes cost more but the kids zones and activities and supervision. Once she entered the teen scene at age 14, RCI was the best for her.

From the Mariner to Freedom, Allure to Oasis, the activities on board like FUEL and club activities, she could not wait to break away from us. We were able to get suites on RCI, where we could not on Disney due to the cost.

Felt very safe and secure, she knew her limits and did not get in trouble.

In fact when she was 17 she was "Prom" queen on the Allure.

Great Memories

Enjoy, we do.

We are a family with grown children however had sailed Disney many many years and was so afraid to change because, well, everyone knows the rest of the industry is subpar. When we did finally take the chance and sail Oasis I was amazed! The food was just as good, the rooms were clean and not the small boxes we had heard they were. The entertainment was as good as Disney and they had just as many things to do if not more.

I know what your saying about the nickel and diming however I took a minute to think about it. Disney does flog their wares. They are at every corner trying to sell you water packages, two for one drinks is another big one for them. They don't sell alcohol packages however I find that to be a plus for RCL and I'm sure if DCL did sell them they would also be pushing this. I don't think DCL pushes dining near as much as RCL but they have asked us out of the blue. Also, they do push the spa packages, its not just RCL. Over all I feel DCL does almost as much nickel and diming as RCL, its just for different things. I just ignore it mostly and it doesn't bother us to much. But that's just my opinion and it doesn't make anyone else's wrong.

We can now book two weeks on RCL for the cost of one on DCL. The best part is that we enjoyed B2B's on DCL as well but are now paying half the price, which in theory means we could now cruise for 4 weeks on what DCL costs us. Is DCL worth the higher cost? Not in my eyes however I no longer have a small child so that is a big factor we don't include.

Thanks for your thoughts, I enjoy reading others reviews. I'm sorry that Jamaica was homophobic. That takes away from the beauty of the country. I would have thought they would be more forward thinking. So glad you all had a great time.

Her age? Wow, is an 8 year old ship now considered old? Considering that she cost $1.4 billion I wonder if she’s even paid for herself yet.

To the OP, I’m not trying to be too critical, it’s just that I see such statements way too often on CC. Considering the capital investment I’d think that cruise lines would like to get at least 25 years of service from a vessel, if not longer.

I’m glad you enjoyed your cruise and thanks for the report.

It might be difficult for you to find the perfect vacation. First you did not believe either cruise line was worth the cost. Seems like the passenger roster was not diverse enough for your liking. You called them out for being mostly southern and or midwestern white people. I hate to break it to you but I doubt any of them cared if you judged their tattoos as being “unfortunate” Even though you were not interested in eating at Johnny Rockets it bothered you that other people did. You went so far as to call them “sheeple.” In your opinion they should ban the smokers and lose $$ (no I’m not a smoker). Maybe the smokers and tattooed passengers aren’t “annoyed” when the cruise line OFFERS additional goods and services to passengers who are under ZERO obligation to purchase. You also think that because you considered the people of Jamaica homophobic that the cruise line should just stop going there. It just seems for someone who doesn’t like being judged you do an awful lot of judging.

Maybe next time you should consider chartering a yacht. It might however be difficult to find the correct diverse crew. Just require them to wear clothing that covers any tattoos they may have. They could stock the right baby food, fly the rainbow flag and only stop at a preapproved islands. You could also make sure the vessel is not more than 8yrs old. The only problem with this option will be finding it at a budget price.

Wait - did you just call out Southerners as sheep with unfortunate tattoos?! Bless your heart :'):')

Please let us know where you're from so we can chime in with the requisite stereotypes and generalizations!

Feel free to overpay for DCL at your earliest convenience

I was also on this cruise and am now back in the Midwest trying to decide what tacky tattoo to get next. Wow; judgmental much? People who make such sweeping disparaging statements about others to make themselves feel superior must live in very small worlds. Maybe you should rent a villa on an island next time to avoid all of the riff-raff.

As someone else mentioned; I'm curious as to what classy, sophisticated region of the world you're from where people all live the way you feel they should.

Was just pointing out the composition of people which I found interesting. No judgment intended- except for the overwhelming amount of smoking which I do find disgusting and it does affect non smokers as well. It was gross wheeling around my baby in a stroller through the clouds of cigarette smoke. And the tattoo comment was a joke- although many people don’t seem to know when to stop.

Never noticed any homophobia in Jamaica, but some people are more sensitive to things than others. Lots of other discussion about Falmouth here: https://boards.cruisecritic.com/showthread.php?t=2584648

Recently back with our 10mo old and never found getting food an issue, but we shared our with him most of the time. The waiter would also bring a plate of cut up fruit every night as well.

In my own experience comments about pax based on a stereotype as opposed to observed behaviour goes the way this is going now, lol. I recall a similar trend when a member a couple of years back complained about "not wanting to see people's bum-holes".

I agree with OP regarding smoking. The casino has become a smokers lounge and it is horrible to walk through.

We were on Allure last year and noticed the same problem with Johnny Rockets being very busy on the last day. We wanted to give it a try given that we have been on so many RCL cruises but never been. After waiting for nearly an hour, we gave up. So lesson learnt, don't wait until the last day!

I have been on Oasis once and Allure twice. My favourite class of RCL ships. I would go again, offers what I want and it is easy to avoid the smokers in the Casino.

We are just home from a back-to-back eastern and then the western caribbean cruise.

Not our first cruise, but our first with RCCL. We too were amazed at how much penny pinching is going on here compared to other cruise lines. Charging $4 for a small cup cake, $3 for some pop corn in the theatre etc. All of these would have been included on the likes of NCL and Princess.

Also the $25 fine for not returning a towel. Really? We had one taken off our sunbed one day and had to argue with the towel station attendant to get it waived. Not what you expect...

Also the pools were massively over-crowded and way above the stated max occupancy on sea days. Getting a sunbed was like trying to win the lottery too.

That said, we LOVED it and would go back to RCCL again.
