Casino Smoke

Recommended Posts

Possibly someday. I quit cold turkey after smoking for 26 years and have been smoke free for 27 years.

Congrats

I quit in 2001 after I got started in Army Boot Camp 28 years earlier.

I said I wasn’t going to be a A hole convert but boy it didn’t take me long to change. [emoji23]

Haha! I'm right there with you. I was SURE I would still respect people's right to smoke, and would not let their smoke bother me, etc. But, once you get it out of your system and realize how awful it smells, it's hard NOT to care. lol

  • 5 weeks later...

Just got off an RC cruise and I can confirm that the casino is used as on indoor smoking lounge. After muster, while the ship was still in port and the casino closed, I walked through the casino and saw a number of people smoking. On my way back to my cabin I overheard some people saying. Lets' go down to the casino and have a cigarette (it was still closed).

The smoke from the casinos naturally goes out from either side of the large openings in the casino and enters surrounding areas including the promenade. We went to look at our pictures, which is next to the casino. We left without buying because I was irritated at having to breathe in a heavy dose of cigarette smoke from the casino next door. I was on the 11th floor near the beautiful open elevator area, and the smoke was coming right up from the casino.

RC's policy is that "our ships are designated as non-smoking", and "On board all interior public spaces are smoke free". In practice much of the indoor areas have various amounts of cigarette smoke in them that comes form the casino. They also say that only active players can smoke, but is it ever enforced? There is a bar in the casino, that is right by the stairs that lead up to the promenade. It is not possible for those at the bar that are smoking to be active players. So they make it sound like no indoor areas on the ship have smoke, except certain areas in the casino. But the smoke doesn't know it should stay in the smoking areas of the casino. It naturally travel to lots of other areas.

If they could just ventilate the casino instead of letting all the smoke pour out into the open areas on either side and the stairs leading from the casino, and into the promenade. I have no problem with people smoking, it is there business, but when their smoke enters my lungs, it is my business. They must make a lot of money on the smokers who gamble, because that is who they cater to.

RC- properly ventilate the casinos or make them non-smoking. Or at least drop the pretense of "all interior places are smoke free".

:I was just told over the phone by a RCI rep that the Adventure of the Seas casino has a non smoking area in the casino that is physically separated by a wall or barrier from the smoking section. I had never heard this before. Is that true?

If it is I think it might be the only one in the fleet.

The non-smoking section in every onboard casino I've been in is a damn joke.

I really wish they'd follow their sister company Celebrity's lead.

For what it's worth, I've read here that RC is going to no-smoking casinos in 2019.

On the ships I’ve been on, the smoking from the casino is so bothersome. I try to limit my casino time to the day time when there aren’t many people there. In my ideal casino, there would be a small ENCLOSED smoking free section. I truly don’t see the point of having one side non smoking when it just wafts right over from the smoking side.

On Enchantment last month there were times when you could smell it all the way at guest services. Disgusting.

We just left the Allure on 2/25. The smoke in the casino was the worst in my six cruises. There were six cruisers in our group, all frequent local casinos where smoking is allowed. Two in our group would not go back into the casino after first trying it, one tried to pick the less smokey times, three of us toughed it out for shorter periods than we would normally play.

If RCCL is basing smoking policy on revenue impact then at some point they will have to realize the revenue potential of non-smokers. I just checked and the US CDC estimates the smoking population at just over 15%, that is a lot lower than I expected. It looks like more non-smokers have to make their voices heard.

It seems to be a "tyranny of the minority" situation as a favored radio host puts it.

Clarea - where did you hear that RC is going smoke free in the casinos in 2019? Can you send the reference?

Thanks, Jo

We've sailed on RC a few times and thoroughly enjoyed the experience except for the heavy smoke in the casinos. We're trying Celebrity this March solely because the casino (and most of the ship) is smoke free. Someone recently on FOS told me he'd been told RC is considering going smoke free in its casinos. Has anyone else heard this?

Cltncruisers - What is FOS? Can you ask where the person heard that RC was going smoke free in the casino? I am trying to track that down, to confirm that it is true.

Thanks, Jo

I think they're referring to Freedom of the Seas. I just posted my review about it and mentioned that I couldn't even go in the Casino because the smoke was so bad

how dare they follow the rules and smoke where they are allowed.

Hahaha

My favorite are the people who just walk through the casino to get to someplace else on the ship and then complain about people who just go to the casino to smoke and not gamble.

The casino on Celebrity is packed each night. Smoke-free. I say you don't have a strong argument.

That has also been our experience. Maybe they did lose some smoking gamblers, but they acquired enough non-smokers to replace them. I also hope they make the no smoking policy fleet wide. I really feel bad for the workers that have to stay in there. Smoking was banned in most public places in the US for a reason. It's very bad for the health. If smokers want to smoke then they need a place where they can smoke totally away from others who don't want to have to breath it in.

Most of the workers are not US citizens, and probably most of THEM smoke.

So working there, they get free smoke from others. :D

Agreed. With the exception of one ship where many of the Casino crew were from the UK. The UK crew did not like the smoke while many European crews seem to not mind.

Problem is on many ships you can not go around the Casino, you have to travel threw it on that deck...
