True, OP has not even cruised on Carnival. Not sure what there is to be terrified over, unless of course they want to stir the pot. To bad there are already about 20 threads on this already.

The effective way would be mace, Taser, batons and other crowd control equipment which they didn't have. Or they could simply stay on the sideline and did nothing until someone was killed So what do you suggest they should do to beak up a brawl other than engaging in some hand-to-hand combat themselves? The talking and reasoning stage was long over as soon as the fight broke out.

Probably going to get flamed but I really can’t believe the responses are more about how security handled these violate thugs. Looks to me, they got what they were giving out to innocent passengers who had to endure their violence. They should have been put off the ship sooner.

I've seen worse fights at football games. It hasn't stopped us from going to another game. People are idiots everywhere. I've only seen one fight on a ship, and that was on RC.

 

OTOH the CCL security team committed many filmed acts of felony assault on cruise passengers. It is called assault by means of a dangerous weapon, i.e. by means of a shod foot. So are you ok with that?

So why are you so afraid of Carnival. First of all, as someone said, this happened in Australia. Second, it could happen on any cruise line, and this will probably be something you may or may not hear about again. I've been cruising since 2005, and I've heard of small fights here and there (family arguments), but a big brawl like that, never. First time I've ever heard of something to that extent. I wouldn't worry about it, it will probably never happen on your ship, and God forbid if it does, I would report it immediately to guest services and security.

 

Relax on your vacation and have a great time.

I agree with most that this type of behavior is extremely rare on vacation. However, the contents of the video show me that the security team, officers and captain were unprepared and were unable to regain control of the situation in a quick, professional manner. Frankly, I was shocked by what I saw in the video. I find this troubling and can understand how someone could be concerned (not terrified) about the preparedness of the security team in the event of emergencies.

Security officers in general are not trained to handle a situation like this. I wouldn’t expect better than average training for cruise ship security. It’s not fair to put someone in a violent and dangerous situation that they haven’t been equipped or trained to handle and then turn around and expect them to be fired when they can’t handle it. Would be kinda like taking you and putting you in a position of a NASA engineer and then firing you when you can’t get a space shuttle to launch.

 

I’m in law enforcement and dealing with an active fight involving multiple parties is harder to deal with than it sounds. It does take training, equipment, and enough personnel to stop it safely. I don’t expect any security guard most likely making minimum wages on a cruise ship to put themselves in the middle of a fight and get beat up themselves.

 

And just btw, tasers and batons wouldn’t have helped much. Mace is the right tool for that situation. If security doesn’t carry mace, have to wait till you’re have more guards than fighters before you intervene. Then u go through in pairs, cuffing everyone up. A guard acting alone to break up a fight is a recipe for disaster

I agree with these sentiments - I would like to think this was a very rare and abnormal situation to have to take on - and not something cruise security personnel could be realistically expected to deal with and trained for. That are taking quite a risk trying to break it up - not an easy thing to.

Watching video again with Wifey. 1:25 into the original video, you see a security member draw back his arm and was about to punch a woman with a red skirt. He sees cell phone recording and puts down his arm. This would of been a much uglier situation had this not been recorded.

The way that security handled it is not the only thing at issue, the people in the fight are the start and end of it. But security taking a horrible approach to ending the altercation is not acceptable. What if security had kicked someone in the head and that person died. When they started kicking they also became part of the problem, they were no longer a solution.

 

I know there are better ways of handling the situation as I stated previously I worked these types of situations for many years. You can do many things to stop this and not one of those things is kicking. The people who started all of this were completely in the wrong and should pay dearly for what they caused. Once it was broken up they were locked in rooms and the next day 6 of the men were escorted off the ship by the police on a boat and then the remaining 14 people with them also left the ship.

 

When the security team started in as they did it just made things escalate as you can see in the video. More than blaming the security people I blame their lack of proper training to handle a situation like this. 2-3 properly trained people could have stopped this with no escalation rather quickly.

 

 

I don’t disagree that the security teams training should be upgraded. I seriously don’t think that 2-3 people could have stopped this gang of 20 violent thugs. Just my opinion but I do respect yours.

The female security guard was only interested in smacking the phone out of the person filming, since she was useless otherwise.

 

Wow, I now feel LESS safe after watching this. :mad::mad::mad::mad::mad::mad:

 

 

She also was one of the security that repeatedly kick the passenger on the ground.

How ridiculous, how can you report it to security when they are busy kicking passengers on the ground?

Unless I read something wrong in the couple of articles I have seen it was a group of 20 people but only 2 where really fighting. Carnival removed 6 of them from the ship the next morning 4 adult males (2 of which are the ones you see on the ground) and 2 teen males. The other 14 people removed where their families (I'm assuming these are the rest of the people you see in the video but I don't really know to be honest).

 

My basis for what I said was had they been trained right this would have ended quickly, people would have cooled down and things would have been safer for all around. I think when the security staff went off like they did (fight or flight instincts) everyone got up in arms and things got worse.

 

Maybe they should have called in the fire response team and hosed everyone down? ;p (I am joking)

I just hope Carnival doesn't use the Security personnel as scapegoats. It was Carnival's ( the Captain's) decision NOT to nip it in the bud earlier by off loading them. By allowing them to remain on board it put the under-trained Security staff in a very awkward position and they dealt with the gradually escalating situation in the only way they knew. Carnival....it's your fault. Yes, improve the Security training but first, accept the blame.

I watched the video. I wouldn’t even call them passengers. They were trouble makers that deserved to get the cr_p beat out of them.
