Huge brawl on the Legend, with video.

I remember a fight between two passengers over a hamburger and yes it was on carnival. But our two carnival cruises had well behaved passengers.

All the video showed me is how inadequately trained ship's security staff is in dealing with these types of situations. I wouldn't get involved, but this was happening most of the trip? Yeah I get the "tossing 'em as a last resort" because we want warm fuzzies all the time, but this was a bunch of BS that should have been dealt with swiftly and severely when this group first attacked another passenger earlier in the trip.

 

I completely agree. But from a personal safety standpoint. From what I saw in the videos, you had to try to get involved in all that. If you turned around and walked away from it you weren't going to have a security tackling you as some here are insinuating. The furtherest out people who had cameras knocked out of their hands still made the choice to stand there and video tape a volatile situation.

Kicking was ok back in the old days in Las Vegas casinos. Security taking a cheater in a back room and 'getting even'. The same behavior by security personal in a public area in this day and age with all the compact video recording devices is just crazy. It isn't going to turn out good for the ownership of the premises where this type of violence is taking place.

Wow!! I didn't know people got drunk and acted like idiots on cruises!! I bet this happens on every cruise ship. I must never cruise again!! What if I start acting like that??? The cruise must have made them behave that way!! Boycott all cruise lines immediately!!

To me, the one female security individual who was trying to knock the phone/camera away clearly didn't know what to do. It was obvious she couldn't assist with the brawl, so she went after an easier target... i.e. the person recording with the cell phone. She was amped up and I'm sure a good dose of adrenaline caused her to act in an otherwise rational manner.

Nothing to indicate said brawlers were drunk. We can assume, but this has not been relayed in any news story.

I’m from the city this large family group are now residing in. As more and more footage appears on news reports there was continuous fighting throughout the cruise from this group. They had already attacked a security officer previously. Some had already been put off in Lifou. I think the security officers probably didn’t know how to handle such a large violent group. I think the offenders should have been put off earlier as many passengers had been threatened by them over incidents throughout the cruise and were scared to come out of their cabins or go anywhere near them. I have done most of my cruising with NCL. Last year, we had a passenger who incited a group to protest each day in the atrium over missed ports due to a mechanical problem. While he was loud, aggressive and a troublemaker he didn’t physically assault anyone. He was confined to his cabin the day in Darwin and not allowed to go ashore. Not sure if this was the ships decision or the Border Control from Australia’s decision as they were onboard to process passports etc before we arrived back in Australia. However, the passenger was later released from his cabin and warned to stop which he didn’t- he was then put off in Cairns and escorted ashore in his own private tender by the Federal Police. He is banned from all cruiselines and not allowed back into Australia. Comparing the two incidents I believe Carnival should have put the troublemakers off and not put their security officers under such stress. Not sure how else they were supposed to control a large group of passengers fighting and physically attacking them. Guns???? Definitely no- this is Australia.

I’ve been cruising CCL for 20 years, got at least 15 cruises with them alone.

I have seen a lot of scuffles on CCL over the years much more than other lines. Keep in mind that all have been late at night, when most are sleeping ( I’d escape sleeping family and venture out)

And every single one involved alcohol.

In every case, it was handled quickly and discretely .

With the legend, you had perfect storm of poorly trained security and a huge group of fighters .

I wouldn’t worry.

A long time ago the cruise lines used to employ security staff from Nepal, famous for Gurkha's. Those guys were professional and didn't mess around. Haven't seen them in a while.

Sounds like you are excusing the behavior of the guards, both behaviors should never occur.

I will grant that carnival appears to have dropped the ball afte they did not off load this bunch of drunks at the first port. However, you most likely have never had to deal with drunk people when they brawl. Their level of energy and hence strength is way over the top and sometimes one has to use force to deal with it. Once people break the law, they lose their rights to the same treatment that one should receive if you are on the right side of societal norms.Better to deal with a jury of 12 then to be carried by 6.

I think at the moment it is. Lots of youth gang ethnic, violence on the increase over the last 12 months in our city, backed up by statistics. Certain areas are worse than others. We have a marked increase in aggravated burglaries, trashing stuff, turning up to events to attack people etc. They’ve set up task forces etc to try and stop the escalating violence, but while we have slack recently introduced laws where repeat offenders are given bail etc, patrolled or let off nothing will change. They walk into supermarkets taking and threatening, then tell the store security they can do nothing to stop them. Even throw stuff at the security guards. Which is right, the security officers are powerless to do anything. This is a very recent phenomena. So I also know what happens when security stands back and just talks. Works with some, but not with people determined to cause trouble. Let’s face it if that large group had behaved we would would not be questioning the security’s response.

Brawls, failed health inspections, broken down equipment, the list goes on. My December 2016 cruise on the Splendor was the last straw. Look, folks. There comes a time when enough is enough. Carnival from 5-6 years ago is not the same company it is now. And all these problems we're witnessing start at the top--right from Carnival headquarters in Miami. I saw and experienced too much during my last trip, things that frankly disturbed me. Some of the food during my last trip was inedible. Flies and insects all over the buffet area, the guy in the deli not using protective gloves when he prepared my sandwich, toilets not working, shower drains backing up, wet carpets, elevators out of service, etc, etc, etc. Not to mention the "couldn't careless" attitude that permeated the entire ship--from guest services right down to the ship's officers, all left a bad taste in my mouth. You can flame me (and probably others) all you want. After 6 cruises on Carnival (including Hawaii and Alaska), I'm done...

Never been on Carnival. I have been on P&O, which can attract Aussie Bogans, also put off a group of passengers two days prior. A passenger used a wine bottle to hit another passenger over the head during a melee. I think her boyfriend was involved. They were returned and put off in Sydney. The offender, a Russian national was due to face court. Haven’t heard the outcome. Although possibly a warning, maybe a fine, then put on a plane back home.

No drink packages on Carnival in Australia, they have enough out of control drunks without that.

Doesn’t say- maybe they were, maybe they weren’t, as various incidents reported just occurred at various times, different places if they took a dislike to someone. Sounds more like a group of aggressive people who ignore rules/authority, were looking for trouble and were happy to threaten and use violence as they pleased. The pack mentality. All the follow up stories I’ve seen today or heard about on the local radio are more about the various incidents they were involved in. Physically too, they were much bigger than the poor security guards.

I have a question for those appalled by the kicking....

If you were the one trapped in a headlock by a person already know to security as a violent person - what would you expect them to do after trying to pull the guy off you?

Just curious

You and many others don't know, this is why they need to be trained to handle these situations and not to monitor them.

The family that was removed from the ship behaved like thugs. They were so violent and threatening to other passengers that security locked a few of these thugs inside their rooms to contain them. Reports in the media describe an very unsafe and tense atmosphere onboard for passengers and crew.

 

Yet oddly most of the comments posted have been about the security team's behavior as they tried to break up the violence. I agree that the crew member who attempted to take away someone's camera was wrong to do so. Other than that, security did the job they are hired to do. If you don't like how it was handled, let them know the next time one of them helps you on your cruise.

I only needed security one time on a cruise and that was to remove a smoker in a non smoking lounge. Never again, as the security guy wouldn't do his job. Smoking in a carpeted lounge with no ash trays with several butts on the floor was ridiculous.
