descal13 Posted April 13, 2018 #1 Share Posted April 13, 2018 I just read that NCL has taken an environmental leap forward and (mostly) banned drinking straws on their ships. I do not know this firsthand, I just read it on a different cruise forum. It will mean that my DH and I will bring reusable silicone straws (sold at Amazon and other retailers) to enjoy our upcoming Bermuda cruise on the Escape. I just want to congratulate NCL on this awesome move. Thanks for making one small but significant change toward making our oceans and planet a cleaner and safer place to visit on your awesome cruises. BYOS 4 UBP, people! trex-de Posted April 13, 2018 #5 Share Posted April 13, 2018 Who wants to drink a drink without a straw? No thanks. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk I hardly ever use a straw...and I don’t know why. Never do it at home, so never do it at a restaurant. I am sure this will save NCL $$. Marketing is gold. Marketing is gold. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk Let me clarify, I’m talking mixed drinks. Not water or soda. The problem is when a drink has ice, drinking without a straw is difficult. And then there are drinks like Mojitos and Daiquiris and other frozen drinks etc. Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
Something fun! Posted April 13, 2018 #8 Share Posted April 13, 2018 A mudslide without a straw? This can't be right.
phissy Posted April 13, 2018 #9 Share Posted April 13, 2018 I think this will go the way of most of these bans. Plastic straws will no longer be acceptable. However, paper straws (which can be recycled) will replace them. Those of us old enough to remember when all straws were paper. Red stripe on white. Like OJ commercial when they stick straw in whole orange.
myra711 Posted April 13, 2018 #10 Share Posted April 13, 2018 When I was visiting Boulder, CO I noticed that there were recyclable stiff straws (not to mention cups) that SEEMED like plastic but would biodegrade. That would work for the frozen drinks, I'm sure!
seemoreroyals Posted April 13, 2018 #11 Share Posted April 13, 2018 Following this as we leave on the Epic in under 2 weeks. We are not big straw users but one of our friends we travel with sucks BBC's down like they are milkshakes. It would be hard to drink one of them without a straw. Rare Laszlo Posted April 13, 2018 #14 Share Posted April 13, 2018 Beginning June 1st every passenger boarding will be giving one straw..........Paper straw Lol Glad they are doing it, Every time I get a drink I need to say something to the bar tender. Like please don't rip the paper covering off, I don't want your dirty fingers touching my clean straw
macandlucy Posted April 13, 2018 #15 Share Posted April 13, 2018 I wish they'd just replace all straws with red Twizzlers. A girl can dream! ;)
Happy Cruisers 2007 Posted April 14, 2018 #16 Share Posted April 14, 2018 We just got off the Dawn and the no straw rule was crazy. All your concerns were real. No straws for mojitos, no straws for mudslides, no straws for daiquiris. I understand the environment but like some suggested there are paper straws. An alcoholic drink is usually layered and sipping from the top tastes totally different when drinking from the bottom with a straw. The drinks were not the same! Gershep Posted April 14, 2018 #17 Share Posted April 14, 2018 I don't mind drinking without a straw but when it comes to frozen drinks I need a straw.
Something fun! Posted April 14, 2018 #18 Share Posted April 14, 2018 Hmmm just had a thought.... Some land bartenders give tou two straws in an attempt to make you drink faster and increase you bill. Maybe they want to slow down the speed with the UBP. No straws on a ship burning insane amounts of oil every day....ooookkkk
janette34 Posted April 14, 2018 #19 Share Posted April 14, 2018 I just got off the Epic this past Saturday. All but once I was given straws in my frozen drinks. Sent from my iPad using Forums

Rare iamaqt2 Posted April 14, 2018 #21 Share Posted April 14, 2018 Seattle has banned plastic straws, and only uses the paper ones. They start out very stiff, and have a very weird mouthfeel. But if you don't drink your beverage super fast, that straw starts getting soggy, and bending, and basically you end up chucking the darn thing, and just go without it. After the first couple paper straws, I just go without. Not worth it.
Weetahbugdotcom Posted April 14, 2018 #22 Share Posted April 14, 2018 No problem. I am bringing my own straw: Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk
A1SusieQ Posted April 14, 2018 #23 Share Posted April 14, 2018 I was on the Breakaway last week. I was told effective April 1st, no drinks would be served with a straw unless requested. It became pretty funny because I kept forgetting to say “with a straw” and the waiter/waitress would have to come back. It is a long walk in the casino. By day 7, I remembered more frequently, I also carried a straw in my purse for emergencies. Lol. Sent from my iPhone using Forums
