Flying to Fort Lauderdale for Miami cruise

Recommended Posts

We live near Baltimore and frequently use Southwest, which flies to Ft Lauderdale but not Miami. We wish to stay overnight before a Royal Caribbean cruise leaving from Port of Miami. What is our best bet for transportation? Should we overnight in Ft. Lauderdale or Miami? What shuttles are available?

Welcome to Cruise Critic!

There is a whole section of Cruise Critic devoted to Florida, located here:

You will see your transport options (Uber/Lyft, shuttle and taxi) discussed there, as well as the common recommendation to stay in Ft Lauderdale, as it is usually cheaper.

I did this in March. Stayed overnight in Miami on the way down and Ft. Lauderdale on the return. For me the best source of transportation and value was Uber. Way cheaper than a taxi. Should be about 35-45 or in that range if not surging.

One option is you could take the "Tri-Rail" train from FLL to Miami. A comp shuttle takes you from FLL airport to the train and then go to MIA. Then maybe book a hotel in Miami that offers a comp shuttle from the airport to that hotel. Or stay in FLL and take the Tri-Rail the next day to Miami. On weekends the train is $5 pp, regardless if where you get on/off.

It's entirely up to you whether you stay in Miami or FLL the night before. If you stay in FLL just leave plenty of time to get to the port.

Also note that most of the shared van ride services only pick up from the AP & go to the port. So by the time you pay to get to your hotel, then pay to get back to the airport, between time & expense you are probably better off with private transportation.

This co. picks up from FLL airport hotels. There is a link to click to see which airport hotels.

If you arrive early in the day...go to Miami. If you arrive late in the day, stay in Ft. Laud....your choice. You definitely do NOT want to use a cab...it will run nearly $100 for the trip. Some "shuttle" service is much cheaper. Google SAS Transportation.

We do this a few times a year. We Fly into FLL. We Stay in FLL area in the Harbor Shops area. We Walk to dinner and pick up wine at Total Wine for the ship. We call an Uber at around 9am and are on the ship in Miami around 11am. Super easy and no waiting for a shuttle. Most shuttle companies first do runs to get the people coming off the ship to the airport. Picking up customers to go to the port is later in the morning, they drive around to hotels and the drive takes longer as you move into the day.

Best mode of transportation is to simply use Uber or Lyft? You call them when you want them, they come, and you go. Total cost is generally about $40. Unlike shuttle services, Uber will pick you up exactly where you want, when you want, and they will drop you at the proper pier. All this with no stops to pick up others or drop others (at different piers).

We do this all the time. Like the Intercontinental, Epic, W Miami especially. Take Lyft from FLL. Last December, it was $36 including tip for the three of us. Took Uber XL to POM from the W (five us us now) and it was $13 including tip. Will do this again next week.
