Will Work for Tiramisu Posted September 22, 2023 #18530 Share Posted September 22, 2023 Well, that was a cheery interlude - just in time for the fall Equinox! Prior to that we were grumping about the sorry state of office culture, and how These Kids Today Don't Want to Work, are A Bunch of Entitlement Monkeys, and while you're at it - Stay Off My Lawn!! I heartily agree. I started working when I was 10 (paper route), and - despite some education along the way - always had a job going, and maintained a work ethic until I recently retired. (Now do endless hubby projects around the house - can I go back to work, please??) My impression, trying to do things in the real world (building design & construction in my case), is that no one wants to work (well, not many). Those that do aren't born in the US. And don't even get me started on expertise - the idea of lifelong learning seems to be a thing of the past. As Chaucer said 650 years ago "The lyf so short, the craft so long to lerne". I'm reminded of a short book by Jane Jacobs "Dark Age Ahead", wherein she puts forward the case that with every step forward in technology, the possibility of humanity losing knowledge of skills will disappear, in a new Dark Age. (Jacobs also and more famously wrote "The Death and Life of Great American Cities", and is notable for organizing people in NYC to stop Robert Moses from punching yet another freeway through her beloved Greenwich Village.) (The "Power Broker" by National Treasure and historian Robert Caro is about the life and (mis)doings of Robert Moses, and gives an idea of the force of Ms Jacobs will & power of her ideas in stopping the Moses juggernaut. A must read.) Computers have been a blessing and a curse - no more memorizing multiplication tables, slide rules, drafting with pencils, the visceral pleasure of conceiving and executing something with your brain and your hands - now a thing of the past. If you see someone shuffling along the deck (of a Silversea ship), mumbling to himself, hair disheveled, worn pocket protector in place - that will be me.... 8

Unfortunately, you're preaching to the choir WWFT. Those of us of a certain age find your epistle heart-wrenchingly apt! And those who should read the gospel according to @Will Work for Tiramisu don't care. It will be very interesting to see where our culture and our world heads. It does not look promising!

Daveywavey70 Posted September 23, 2023 #18537 Share Posted September 23, 2023 Sorry but not sorry. My dander is well and truly up! Why on earth is SS visiting Saudi Arabia? Yes it's exotic and off the beaten track but that's for good reason, Yes, not many of your friends have been there, that's also for good reason but really? The "modernisation" of KSA is an utter farce. The huge publicity they sought over allowing women to take a driving test a couple of years ago seemed like a huge step forward? What we are told is that women are allowed to now book a driving test! What we are not told is that those women that book a driving test are stoned when they turn up to take it (And I don't mean in the Willie Nelson sense of the word). Women visiting on cruise ships are forced to wear a burqa and everybody is ushered away from the public executions. I, Personally, would be beheaded there just because I'm in love with another man. I For one wouldn't be so much worried about my visa application being approved but being beheaded, I must admit, it would be a bit of a downer on my holiday. Silversea, why are you not boycotting such regimes? Would you happily take a gay person on this cruise knowing the consequences that they might face or would you come clean and advise them against taking this cruise? 5

It will be very interesting to see where our culture and our world heads. It does not look promising! Those who should read it don‘t understand what is meant even if they would read it. Our team (aged between 23 and 62 and all with a strong work ethos no matter which generation) had a meeting with our head of department (mid thirties) this week, initiated by her to „feel our pulse“. Probably just required to do this to tick another box in the procedure. Yes cynical again but when starting in this function, two people were fired in her first week just to show who is boss. She has no banking background, but comes from one of those big consulting firms. Shock and awe tactics and a bit of a wake up call when coming from a perfectly harmless looking woman. Anyway, we all had our say of what worked and what did not in collaboration with other offices. Could not get through. But there is a brilliant solution: Turns out „core units“ or „backoffice“ don‘t want to be called that any more, we are to call them „experts“ or „specialists“ in our correspondence and then things will go swimmingly. Relabelling will solve the problem of no one taking ownership anymore and they all will become hardworking experts overnight😂 I blame social media… 2

Alright so it is an old one at short notice. “After being married for 50 years, I took a careful look at my wife one day and said, ‘Fifty years ago we had a cheap house, a junk car, slept on a sofa bed and watched a 10-inch black and white TV, but I got to sleep with a hot 23-year-old girl every night. Now, I have a $500,000 home, a $45,000 car, a nice big bed and a large screen TV, but I'm sleeping with a 69-year-old woman. It seems to me that you're not holding up your side of things.’ My wife is a very reasonable woman. She told me to go out and find a hot 23-year-old girl and she would make sure that I would once again be living in a cheap house, driving a junk car, sleeping on a sofa bed and watching a 10-inch black and white TV. Aren't older women great? They really know how to solve an old guy's problems.” 4

DW, I think that if all the passengers on the cruises with planned ports in Saudi Arabia refused to get off the ship in those ports, Silversea might get the message. They are offering the ports and it is up to the passengers to decide what they want. The masses have a voice.
