bizeemom4 Posted September 8, 2018 #26 Share Posted September 8, 2018 We are on Liberty sailing on 9/13. Just a quickie to Nassau. Needed to squeeze in a small cruise to burn up expiring cruise credit. Hope it won’t be a wild ride. Sent from my iPhone using Forums
beachbum6264 Posted September 8, 2018 #27 Share Posted September 8, 2018 I have a friend who gets carsick easier than anyone I've ever seen, but she was determined to cruise with me. I told her to start taking Ginger Root capsules twice a day several days before the cruise started, and Bonine twice a day a couple of days before. She's been on 4 cruises with me, one with a very rough night with some in our group getting sick, but she's never been seasick. Green apples are another good thing to help prevent a queasy stomach, and may help if you do get sick too.
christyran1228 Posted September 8, 2018 #28 Share Posted September 8, 2018 Ginger candy is hard to find.the one store we found it at went out of business.my wife and dog eat it like it was going out of style.might have to try the oriental stores. loxley Posted September 8, 2018 #29 Share Posted September 8, 2018 You may be rerouted and not actually going to where you think. The captain will do his best to stay in calm Waters. No way to really predict the impact right now. Just get on and expect fun. Sent from my Pixel XL using Tapatalk
shipgeeks Posted September 8, 2018 #30 Share Posted September 8, 2018 IMO, feeling it and minding it are two different things. DH and I have been on many cruises with very rough seas; we feel it but we also enjoy that motion. Think of all the people who voluntarily go on rides at theme parks! rolloman Posted September 9, 2018 #31 Share Posted September 9, 2018 (edited) The Storm as of now, is headed far away to the Carolinas, you are headed south to the Bahamas. I am not sure what you are worried for? It has been my experience (10 hurricanes) the weather is usually fantastic far away from the storm because the storm absorbs its energy closer in thus leaving the outer area tranquil. Now suppose you do get to feeling sick on a cruise. The best thing to do is go to the middle lower decks, such as the atrium or casino. This will be the sweet spot for least movement the ship will have to offer. I also see where you have small children you are worried about getting sick.....typically young children do not get motion sickness at the rate adults do. Ever wonder why you see all the kids on the spin rides at the fair and not many adults? Relax, enjoy your cruise, a four day is too short to stress over. Below is a good web site to show the wave forecast. As you can see, it should be smooth sailing the duration of your sailing. swellinfo.com/surf-forecast/cape-canaveral-florida Edited September 9, 2018 by rolloman Added information
Hopep84 Posted September 9, 2018 #32 Share Posted September 9, 2018 I highly recommend bringing Bonine and children's dramamine just in case. I get seasick on calm seas but Bonine twice a day keeps me completely fine and one of my kids also gets sick but the children's dramamine helps him. The bands and ginger do NOT work for me at all. Even if you don't need the meds, you are only out a few dollars and if you do need them, you don't want to be reliant on the ship or port stores for meds. evandbob Posted September 9, 2018 #33 Share Posted September 9, 2018 And this has "what" to do with high seas and hurricanes?? Confused?? I must have missed something in this thread?:) Probability - mathemathics. It's an analogy to explain "high occurence". Perhaps a poor one if you didn't get it. Perhaps not. Depends on one's sense of translational intellect, that's all. My statement was a reply to RebelAthena's post "So What?".

Maybe you should have rephrased it! (Translational definition, the rendering of something into another language or into one's own from another language. ) I guess in this case it was used to refer to your intellect, definitely higher than most mortals.....:):)
Rainbowfalls Posted September 9, 2018 #35 Share Posted September 9, 2018 One of the cruised we took one year the waves were rough. Those of us predispositioned to motion sickness took medication 24 hrs ahead of time then again when on the ship. We also took ginger ale, crystallized ginger and soda crackers. That evening everyone took an hour nap and we all felt so much better. Taking a nap typically is what works the best for everyone i know and then ginger or soda crackers when awake to help with the nausea feeling. Goof luck! Drazil65 Posted September 9, 2018 #37 Share Posted September 9, 2018 DH is motion sick prone and has used doctor prescribed patches (behind ear) for years for cruising. He starts 24 hrs before we get in ship, uses typically 2 more throughout the week. In addition, we always have Dramamine and Bonine on hand as well as ginger candy (Rite Aid) and ginger ale in the cabin. This has worked for him (even in rougher seas) great, we come prepared to head it off right from the start and if you need to lay down and take a nap, then do so. DH and I have been on many cruises with very rough seas; we feel it but we also enjoy that motion. Think of all the people who voluntarily go on rides at theme parks! I agree and also enjoy feeling the motion of rough seas. We've been on 5 cruises and 3 of them have had rough seas for at least part - Nor'easter in March returning to Baltimore from Freeport, strong winds/swells in October 2017 returning to Brooklyn from Halifax, and some type of stormy weather in April 2014 for most of the trip from Baltimore to Bahamas and back. Our two roughest sea trips were outside of hurricane season, so avoiding May-November doesn't guarantee smooth seas.

DH and I have been on many cruises with very rough seas; we feel it but we also enjoy that motion. Think of all the people who voluntarily go on rides at theme parks! When I saw this thread I knew there would be someone come on here and brag about enjoying rough seas.... I guess it all depends upon the individual perception of what constitutes rough seas.....I have been in 30 foot waves in the Navy and I assure you there is nothing enjoyable about it. I have been in 20 foot waves on a cruise ship and again there is nothing enjoyable about it. People are sick, shows are cancelled, pools closed, moving about the decks is dangerous. How is that possibly enjoyable on a paid vacation? However if enjoyable is ten foot waves with short periods...well in my opinion that is not rough seas...maybe choppy lol.... bizeemom4 Posted September 12, 2018 #41 Share Posted September 12, 2018 Liberty docks in PC in 36 hours. Wave height projections are 12-14 feet. Liberty returns to PC again in 4.5 days. To my delight, the waves look to be returning to 12-14 feet. We are still scheduled to fly down from Dulles tomorrow night and board Thursday morning. Should be a real trip (sarcasm). I am not looking forward to this at all. Sent from my iPhone using Forums

TNcruising02 Posted September 12, 2018 #43 Share Posted September 12, 2018 I'm on the Carnival Pride right now. We left from Baltimore on Sunday. We were originally going to Bermuda, but were rerouted to the Freeport, Grand Turk, and Half Moon Cay. It was very cold on Sunday when we left, but Monday and today have been calm and sunny. I was wondering if the hurricane would affect our trip and cause rough seas, but it never happened. Looking out of my balcony right now, I would never know that a hurricane is out there. The ocean is almost flat and the sun is shining. Returning to Baltimore might be a different story. I guess it's possible we could dock somewhere else, depending on the flooding. We are due back on Sunday.

SeaHunt Posted September 13, 2018 #47 Share Posted September 13, 2018 Try Motioneaze, it really works for me :D And it's especially nice for kids because it's all natural, drug free and they don't have to swallow anything - just rub in a drop behind each ear: https://motioneaze.com/motion-sickness-relief-kids/

I am not sure what you are worried for? It has been my experience (10 hurricanes) the weather is usually fantastic far away from the storm because the storm absorbs its energy closer in thus leaving the outer area tranquil. The effects might be felt after the storm is "done" - we took a Bahamas cruise out of Canaveral in early March this year, right after a couple of nor-easters hit the northeast. The swells went south and caused much sea-sickness with the passengers on Liberty, including my Mom. We had 20' to 25' swells. My wife and I were fine - we used the seabands, and we seem to have sea legs. The seabands and Bonine helped my Mom, but were not completely effective. Her lack of tolerance to alcohol didn't help, either.
cruziJenn Posted September 14, 2018 #50 Share Posted September 14, 2018 Ginger...doesn't have to be candy, you can get it in several forms. Canada Dry ginger ale has real ginger (not all of them do). DH takes an herbal supplement. And yes Amazon is a good source for lots of variations. Dr's recommendation is to start taking it in several days before cruising.
