Edge (and Apex?) issues...

not an issue that they have done major changes with their new ships. bigger issue is how drasticly they change the older ships before they see how successful the new ships are.

Definitely true.  Celebrity should have waited to how how well received the Edge was for a few months, before making plans for renovating all the other ships, and starting to build the Apex.

They may be successful with the decision, they may not be.  Time will tell.  I expect that they will lose a fair percentage of previous Celebrity passengers if they go too far in the edge style renovations of the old ships.  The question then becomes how successful it will be in attracting new, non-traditional cruisers.

There is a very good book  "Why Smart Executives Fail And What You Can Learn From There Mistakes".  What Celebrity is doing might be very successful, or it might make for a good case study for a future edition of the book.

As we noted earlier we are a little edgy (sorry) about our cabin choice and I was checking today incase there were any SV cabins available now. The last time I checked on our cruise there were very, very few cabins available of any description. Sadly, there were no SV cabins but I was very surprised to note how many other cabins have now become available. It made me wonder how many people are cancelling and it was really interesting to see which cabins are now available that were once occupied. It is obvious that people have read reviews and are concerned.

I think there may be a few more when they find out their 1B cabins have suddenly been reclassified as obstructive views.

On a side note, are you having problems putting your countdown clock on your signature?

From what I remember, the CC cabins near to the MC and some other categories near there are now available. Worryingly some near to us have become available, but we have now discovered that we are above an outdoor area from Eden. We checked very carefully when we booked and reckoned that 6 cabins in on deck 8 would be away from the noise from Eden so toes and fingers crossed. Re the outdoor area - we asked Celebrity on line and were told that it would be quiet and on Connie in August I discussed this area with someone selling Edge who had no idea that the area existed and told us it would be quiet. It had better be quiet as we have it in writing that it would be !

I’m sure you’ll enjoy it whatever as you’ll be celebrating your special event.

I suppose that is why we want it to be spot on -- a lot of thought went in to where to go and what to do, so we sort of put our faith in Celebrity and their new ship as our first Celebrity cruise was on their new ship, Silhouette. Perhaps I should stop reading CC for a while until it settles down --- no one liked Silly when she was new 😉

We sailed on he Silly for  her second cruise out of Cape Liberty.  Aside from the sheets of plastic covering all the grass and lawns protecting it from the frigid weather the ship was great. LOL

I think there are huge differences with the new beast though. We love Silhouette but our experience on Reflection was totally different, so horses for courses.

Sometimes you have to step back and consider if what you are paying is value to you. It may not be for some, however your needs may justify the costing. We looked at Edge for Europe and decided we couldn’t justify the costings when the ship sailed to places we’d previously visited and we could cruise on another line for 13 nights in the US for less than the 7 nights in an IV (an oceanview with a drop down window - I can’t describe it any other way as that’s what I said it would be from the first renderings, exactly as X portrayed it).

Some love the new concept, so they can justify the high prices and they may enjoy the experience of ‘being the first ones’ to say they have sailed on her. It’s really not worth that much to us but it’s not wrong for anyone else if that ‘floats their boat’. I would, however, be extremely annoyed to discover my cabin had been reclassified as obstructed this late in the day.

We sailed in August 2011 on her first proper 12 night Holy Land cruise. We loved her, but boy the reviews were dire.

I just hope I still like Silly after the Revolution

Now if they spoil her that would be a travesty and worth a lot of people complaining about. She isn't that old at the end of the day and was, to us, just perfect. If she was sailing to somewhere hot from Southampton rather than the Baltic at the moment we would not hesitate to book her again and will always have a 'soft spot' for her. (Please God, don't let them put those Eden people on there ---- groannnnnnnnn)

I think many of us are hoping the same 😉. It’s definitely making a few of us very nervous about this ‘Revolution’. As I stated previously, I hope there isn’t a revolution by cruisers after X has made the changes 😆.

I think we did the first  Silho RT out of Cape Liberty...We had cold weather first and last sea days and returned to a snow covered car...We have gone back to Silho   and Equinox quite a few times,  our fav S Class  ships ( least fav Reflection). If they don't get rid of the balconies and our fav spots, we'll go back again...

I just made a reservation for 2020 on the Silly. I really enjoyed my TA o the Reflection so I assume I would also enjoy the Silly. When choosing a European cruise in fall 20202 I left out all of the Edge and Apex cruises from my list. If they get rid of the Ensemble, Sky Lounge and Wine Cellar when they "Revolutionize" the ship, I will cancel. I am beginning to think Holland America could up their game and begin filling the void Celebrity may create if they begin eschewing 50+ cruisers.

We followed the Silhouette through her build and arrival in the US!!  We couldn't wait to get on and it delivered in every way!  It's personally my favorite Celebrity ship!!

If I remember rightly, her first cruises were from Rome and she was full of Italians who had a different way of cruising than previous Celebrity cruisers. We had holidayed in Italy many times and just thought the things that were happening were normal. Love Italians and Italy and just so loved Silhouette so it was happy days for us 🙂

We really enjoyed sailing out of Cape Liberty in the cold weather on Celebrity ships. Then they stopped and we did HAL from NYC or Royal Caribbean from Cape Liberty.

Now Royal Caribbean won't be doing any more 12 days in Jan-Feb-March after 2019 and will only be doing 3 eleven night cruises in January 2020.

We will not sail on any ship without a REAL veranda, not just an opening window.

Our first cruise was on the Zenith before they added verandas to it. Our suite was really just a large OV with a butler.. LOL.

X is doing a repo in Oct. 2020 from Boston to Ft. Lauderdale via the Caribbean on Summit after her “revolution”. I'm wondering if this is a one off, or if X is testing the waters to see if Boston might be an alternative to Cape Liberty?

I will be sure to let you know if I believe X is eschewing us, all of whom are 50+ and 50++.

I do not think so, but will wait and see.. excited to board..

Sailed on the first Silhouette cruise out of Cape Liberty, and then sailed it again a few months later.  Loved it from the beginning. I think it is still my favorite S class ship. I think I've been on her 6 or 7 times.

And, yes I am concerned about how much they do to all the M and S class ships in the revolution, after sailing on the Edge.

I doubt it would become an alternative to Cape LIberty, especially after they renovated the cruise port. I Live in NJ, and getting to Cape Liberty is easy for people in the tri-state area.  But to drive to Boston, oh My, that is not a fun drive.  My son went to grad school in Boston, and it is just a very tedious drive, dread it.  I would much rather drive to BAltimore to catch a cruise, which I have done several times.

Well we live in southern CT and it’s not a fun drive for us to get to Cape Liberty.  😉We're happy to see a X ship sailing from Boston and hope they will continue to offer alternative port choices.

How interesting!  Might just look into that one and repo ourselves from Cape Cod to Fl.😉

Hence my 30% estimate

There are other lines where you have options of what level drink package.  Does not have to be "premium" some have with lunch and dinner only wines, beers and champagne. You only get it while at the table.  Premium is an upgrade where you can order at any time, poolside, in the lounges, and theater. Of course in the casino, but most of those types of ships have smaller casinos than Celebrity. I am speaking in particular about Oceania.  I believe even Princess has several levels of drink packages. Also when you have a drink package on Oceania they will deliver drinks to your room without additional charge.

It seems like there are a few "cheerleaders" here who only want to hear the positive, but I for one am so grateful for those early reviews and that I switched to Reflection.   We spent more money because we wanted to because we were so impressed with the photos and perks of the suites that we have now a Royal and got the bid offer to upgrade to Penthouse or Reflection. Even bit on that one and put in a pretty hefty upbid.  I started out with a sunset veranda on Edge.

So it didn't cost Celebrity for me to switch, instead our group (5 of us 3 cabins one is a single) ended up spending about 3 times what we had initially booked on Edge to get the experience we are more confident we will enjoy.

I appreciate all reviews and Celebrity should too.
