Cape Town hotel

Our Azamara Journey cruise finishes in Cape Town. We'll only have 2 or 3 nights in the city because we need to work -----to pay for more cruises, of course!

 

So, where would you suggest we stay? We usually book Sofitel hotels if available but I see that CT doesn't have one.

We stayed at the Raddison Blu Waterfront, fabulous hotel on the front, we had breakfast outside each day whilst watching dolphins frolicking in the bay. Only 5 mins from the Victoria Waterfront by complementary shuttle which runs hourly and very reasonable. Great breakfast buffet.

Thanks We were looking for options. Great to hear what those on other cruises are planning. There’s going to be a lot of new Azamara learning about South Africa this year.

We stayed at the Lawhill Luxury Apartments on the V&A Waterfront, they were excellent and arranged airport and port transfers at reasonable rates. Being apartments you get more space but of course are self catering which is not a problem as there are plenty of eating options very close by. They are serviced apartments so are cleaned with beds made and towels changed daily, so are an excellent alternative to a hotel. Security is excellent with card controlled access only, we were also able to use the facilities at the One & Only Cape Town which is next door.

If you'd prefer something a little more intimate and also budget-friendly, I suggest a small hotel called An African Villa. I stayed for 5 days a few years ago. There are rooftop views of Table Mountain, beautiful African art featured around the villas, and a great included breakfast. I would definitely choose something at the V and A Waterfront. We stayed at a lovely boutique hotel closer to the city central, but ended up wishing we had made a different selection. The shopping, dining, and activity level is so much fun at the waterfront area. After touring all day (there is sooo much to do within an hour or so drive of the city), we were tired at night and didn't really feel like fussing over reservations, taxis, etc. That's when we realized how nice it would have been to just walk out of our hotel and into the action! I would look at TripAdvisor and also check on the Ports of Call boards for Capetown here on Cruise Critic to find a specific hotel in the area that meets your needs.

Definitely check out the Cape Grace, one of my favorite hotels not only in CapeTown but anywhere. The have superb services, lovely rooms and BMW 745s to take you and pick you up anywhere within reason.

I had a look at this on line after seeing your photos. Interesting! Was this a one bed superior?

It was a Luxury one bed apartment with balcony, outside pictures were taken from the entrance to our block and the last one shows the One & Only Cape Town to the left with the pool area to the right.

Another vote for Cape Grace but it is VERY expensive.  We are staying at Table Bay Hotel.

I would be very careful as a single lady, make sure you know EXACTLY where you are going. 

Weve been before as we have family there.  My relative is now an A and E trauma consultant specialising in gunshot injuries. His advice always move in pairs even at the Waterfront and research your route etc before you leave your hotel if you are walking. You will have no problem if you follow advice from reputable sources (eg hotel concierges) but I’d strike bar hopping from your plans. 

We stayed at the Holiday Inn, it was fine but we were advised you needed transport to the Waterfront for safety.  It wasn’t an issue and we may consider it again, it depends on the budget and exchange rate nearer the time.

 

All the Waterfront hotels carry a premium because everything is on your doorstep. There are some hotels who provide free hourly shuttles to the Waterfront they can be a good deal if you want somewhere cheaper.

In relation to your question for hotel in Cape Town, if your budget allows, nothing beats the Mount Nelson Hotel. It belongs to a firma called Belmond, which used to be called before Orient Express. They have fantastic hotels in several places in the world. I have stayed with them at their hotel in Iguazu Falls, at their hotel in Yangoon and at their hotel in Macchu Picchu. First class hotels in first class location...if in Cape Town, I would stay there.

Excellent advice, we have stayed twice at the Winchester Mansions, a lovely colonial style hotel a couple of miles along the coast from the waterfront.

They provided a shuttle to the waterfront but that was few years ago.

The Cape Grace is wonderful and its location can't be beat.  But as noted above it is pricey.  We stayed there as part of our AmaWaterways Zambezi River cruise, but for the pre-trip nights we opted to save $$$ by staying at the Portswood Hotel.  It is close to the V&A Waterfront, cheaper than the Cape Grace – and we actually liked it better.

Looked to be an amazing hotel but no doubt is extremely pricey, however it’s fair to say that the Waterfront is not short of extremely good places to stay.

I have not stayed in any CPetown hotel. But thinking of having wine there or a hotel during my time on ship. I have heard the most about the Cape Grace Hotel vs others.

Yes we stayed at the Queen Victoria for a week in Cape Town and loved it, however for a hotel to have a glass or two of wine, the Cape Grace is in a superb position and also does a great afternoon tea!!   

There are many other good places within the V&A to have a drink and enjoy the environment, and South Africa does great wines.

We stayed 3 nights last May at The Cape Cadogon before going to safari camps.  It is a small hotel with excellent service. They provided us with private transportation to and from dinner two nights without any additional charge.  It is coming in at number 15 on TripAdvisor and is half the price of Cape Grace. I told the manager, that the atmosphere created by staff and the common areas reminded me of Hotel 41 in London, just not as posh.
