I'm a non-smoker, but you say that as if it's a foregone conclusion that casino play will increase. What if they find that it actually decreases participation?

Then I guess the smoking rules will be changed back. I don't smoke and my wife has severe asthma attacks brought on by tobacco smoke. We don't gamble either so either way it doesn't matter to us. What it would do is allow us to pass through or close by that area of the ship (which I believe is the easiest route to the theatre) without my wife trying to cough up a lung.

I guess my wording was a little ambiguous I was suggesting that they may find an increase in play if the casino wasn't one of the smoking pits. There is no smoking in the casinos on Celebrity.

Yeah!!  I saw that a while ago and immediately jumped on my casino offerings and booked four of 'em -- well, actually 2 B2Bs!!  Anyway, 32 days on the ships playing blackjack in clean air.

Smoking is allowed in the casino on the Rotterdam now!

I wonder if when the current No Smoking in the casino show a rise in casino play maybe they will decide to make it permanent. Wishful thinking I know.

When IL eliminated smoking in their casinos business declined 38%.

Have you finally thrown in the towel on your wishful thinking that casino business will somehow increase if/when smoking is banned in them?

The post was what it was and I think there were just as many posts supporting my wishful thinking as those ridiculing. It is as it is, like I said it really doesn't matter to us we don't gamble but would prefer not to have to do a deck over or deck under detour just to get to and from the theatre. Enjoy the smoking pit.

To us, having to do a detour for something we don't like is great.. not a problem. Go with the flow and don't whine about it is our motto. Why would I enjoy the 'smoking pit', as you say., since as I mentioned, I don't smoke.

One I wasn't whining, let the bone go.

You're beating a dead horse.

Clearly you were looking for a snarky response because I'm pretty sure others continue to beat the dead horse. Everyone take the plain talk. I'm out but will continue to reply when quoted with more and more rude responses.

Maybe I missed this in the discussion about the price of cigs.

Just for fun, I decided to actually LOOK at HAL's current smoking policy...

https://www.hollandamerica.com/en_US/faq.shipboard-life.is-smoking-allowed-on-board.html

*Due to the current health and safety protocols in our continuing effort to minimize the risk of exposure to COVID-19, smoking will be temporarily prohibited in all casinos until further notice.

Great news.  I may be booking a couple of Casino sailings in the next couple of days and was concerned that I was booking a ship that still allowed smoking in the casino.  Of course, these sailings won't be until next spring/summer, so smoking may be allowed again by then.  Hopefully not.

I can tell you this is not true on the Rotterdam, at least during the Trans-Atlantic.  There was just 1 day on the 14 day cruise where the casino was non-smoking 🤬

Not fun when you are doing well with a machine and then someone sits right next to you and lights up.

It was an absolute delight to sail on Eurodam 11/16 and have no smoking in the casino.  And the casino was plenty busy.  Sailing on Saturday on NA.  Plan on spending lots of time in the casino, again.

What I think I may end up doing when I sail on ships that have smoking in the casino, is to just wear a mask.  We had to be masked on Eurodam.  You could drop it, take a drink, and put it back on, unlike being able to sit in other areas with a drink in front of you and keep the mask off.  I mean, right across the "Music Walk" were people sitting at the piano bar, maskless.  Yet we had to remain masked in the casino.

Oh well.  It is what it is.  For the moment, at least.

But I can see me wearing a mask while in the casino when I'm on Carnival at the end of January since heavy smoke triggers my asthma.  I don't like being masked, but we all should be pretty used to it by now!

You'll be pleased to hear Carnival has banned all smoking in their casinos thru the end of January 2022. Hope HAL does the same (and makes it permanent!)

Wow. This is really great news. We just got off the Nieuw Statendam this morning and neither my husband nor I could use the casino because it REEKED of cigarettes, both in the casino as well as anywhere near it, on both decks.  I have never smelled a casino that stunk so bad.  We found it quite shocking given the circumstances.  We hope this rule remains as we were already starting to look at cruiselines and ships which didn’t have it.

Same on Koningsdam last month.  Reeked!  And the awful thing was I only play blackjack so I was only at the tables where...unless we were actually drinking...we were politely told to mask up.  But the smokers at the slots....well, they just kept a cig lit and I NEVER saw any of them with a mask on.   And yes, I also hope that they keep this rule in place.

Same with my husband. He only plays blackjack but couldn’t because of the smoke. The mask rule was ridiculous.  Covid is airborne and yet they’re going to allow constantly exhaling smokers in an enclosed environment during a pandemic?  And they expect to keep their cruise lines in business?  It’s mind boggling.  But now I know why it was far smokier than usual.  You hit the nail on the head.

We must all proactively compel Holland America Line to permanently ban any and all smoking aboard ships post haste! Excuse me, I ordered a Zima, not emphysema. 🚭

I disagree. There should be an outdoor, and an enclosed indoor, smoking area on every ship. The indoor area should be well ventilated with smoke eater machines and exhaust to the outdoors.
Smokers should always be required to smoke only there, and non-smokers can simply stay away from those two areas.

There can be a peaceful co-existence.
