K9 Given Narcan After Searching for Drugs on Epic

Saw this on local news - poor doggo, hope he's OK!

 

A Brevard County Sheriff's Office K-9 continued to recover Thursday, one day after being exposed to a drug at Port Canaveral.

Passengers were boarding the Norwegian Epic for Holy Ship!, an annual electronic dance music festival aboard a cruise ship, when Jake alerted to the presence of drugs.

The dog notified his handler, Deputy Scott Stewart, before falling ill. 

"(The dog) started having some problems with balance and had some type of seizure incident of some sort, was showing effects of having inhaled some substance," said Tod Goodyear, a Sheriff's Office spokesman. "They administered the Narcan and got (the dog) to the vet as quick as they could."

Read about this morning in the paper, the ship or cruise line was not mentioned. Also heard about it on the news yesterday. I had wondered if it was the Epic

Potentially a nut, chilli, chocolate, raisins can kill a dog, be very care full what you feed dogs...

If they gave him Narcan then he was exposed to an opiate.  The amount it takes for the newer compounds is shockingly small.  This picture represents an OD amounts for an adult so a dog would be even less.

Hopefully the Narcan didn't/doesn't interfere with other drugs (or exacerbate their effects).

 

One problem with the inhaled/ingested/injected serious opiates is that they can kill quickly.

That's why having Narcan *on hand* can make such a difference.

 

Many other overdoses... at least there might be time to get to a hospital.  (Some of the others can also kill, but at least there is time to try some measures to help minimize that chance.)

It doesn't...it only effects the receptors sensitive to opiates.  That is why is pretty much the first choice in an OD on unknown substances.

Narcan is only effective with opiates. Has no affects if the patient isn't dealing with an opiate OD. K9 "should" be fine. Most K9 handlers are carrying Narcan for their partners as standard procedure due to the ease of exposure and the dangerous nature of the other derivatives of opium. Prayers to the 4 legged partner of the handler.

I was just curious. Was wondering if that meant the one bag had an extreme amount, or if it was something different. Definitely putting my thoughts towards the poor dog.

It was a drug sniffing dog, that is what it is trained to do. AND that is why the handlers carry narcan on them for instances such as these. Yes, the war on drugs continues. We pray the k-9 will be ok.

The dog is at risk just as are all police officers.  That's their job.  I don't see how it was a fail if the K9 found drugs.

I just think it’s a massive waste of money and resources... much like when they tried prohibition.

I Hope they add assaulting an officer to the charges for the person with the drugs.

The passenger was charged with possessing a controlled substance without a prescription after deputies found on him a sedative and other prescription drugs, as well as an amphetamine and ecstasy.

Goodyear says Jake shouldn’t suffer any long-term effects and will return to work.

My son and husband are both fire fighters/paramedics and are exposed to these deadly drugs every time they run on an overdose.  I do hope the dog is ok.  unfortunately, our first responders have to go on scenes every day not knowing what they are dealing with. 

 

Side note, my dad is sailing tonight on the Epic and called and said they boarded the around 4:00. He said all the luggage was still on the dock when he got on. I’m sure they will not be heading out for a while.
