I was on the Jade that was interrupted at Thanksgiving and my Travel Insurance (Travel Guard) did pay in addition to what NCL covered.  My advice is to check with your insurer.

Does anyone know if the tugs that assisted the Epic out of the port were just a precaution or do they still have mechanical issues?

Also, can we tell if the boat is heading for Nassau or the before rumored drydock in Freeport? I'm certainly not an expert but I can't imagine that the repairs needed on the hull and the generators would require drydock that's why I'm asking folks who know a lot more than I do...lol

Yes, we aren't supposed to board until the 7th so I am a little less nervous than you are, but still concerned just the same. I'm going on a trip somewhere on the 7th even if I have to jump on that raggedy casino boat.....lol

lol Keep that tude you will have fun no matter what! Was just going to go florida for a week ..found a cruise to Cuba,fits our dates! we are in an inside cabin which we never do! I am thrilled just to be on a cruise!! :)

Oh gosh! You gotta lot more nerve than me last time I was on it, it was definitely raggedy! Lol but yeah I am nervous and even more nervous because I am picking up my engagement ring in St. Thomas they were making it and I am supposed to get engaged so you can only imagine how nervous and worried I am feeling at this moment!!!!!

I'm no expert and I dont know about the tugs except they were there.  But according to Marine Traffic she is cruising down the Fla coast at 14.4 Knts heading to Nas

It’s my understanding that after a few hundred people got sick from Noro on Oasis last month, 100% of passengers received a full refund. NCL can and should do better than what they’ve offered.

Yes, RCCL raised the bar on reacting to a ruined cruise.

To me there's a difference between 'health compromised' like with Noro and you didn't get to go to the originally planned itinerary but by what we've heard everyone still had full access to on-board amenities.

To say "health compromised" in regards to norovirus is an overstatement is an underststement.  The virus was reported by less than 10% of the passangers and prevention was at least partially controlled by the actions of the passangers.  The resulting cruise to nowhere was the same.  It was an unusual move by RCCL, but I think it turned out to be a very smart move.  But that's just my opnion.

You are correct, the propulsion motors are AC motors, but in order to vary the speed, you vary the frequency, and these are 10k volt, 20+ Mw frequency drives.  There are very large power SCR's in these drives.  Plus, typically, the propulsion motors are dual windings, where each winding is fed from a separate feeder giving half the power of the motor, so there are two separate drives for each motor.  This provides some redundancy, should one switchboard or the other (each engine room feeds a separate switchboard) be damaged.  Under normal conditions these two switchboards are joined together.

The damage to the ship was relatively minor, okay, but I wouldn't categorize the incident as "a big nothing".

The tops of the dolphins (the concrete platform) is held to the pilings with bolts, and these are not designed to take shear load, especially where you see the first platform rotating, and so these bolts sheared, and the platform dropped off.  And yes, it destroyed the walkways between dolphins, but in terms of typical marine allisions, this wasn't that big a deal, particularly for the ship.

What i cant figure out is why the CG let us leave San Juan with engine problems. Whatever. 

The simple fact is that 98% of the world's shipping only have one propeller, and two steering motors.  Epic has two propellers and four steering motors, and left San Juan with one propeller and four steering motors.  If the USCG stopped every ship that only had one propeller, our ports would be empty.  Having one propeller working in no way reduces the seaworthiness of a vessel, but it may require, in some ports (such as US ports, per the USCG), the use of tugs as aids and precautions against further failures, while in constricted waterways.

FWIW...all of the exhaust is coming out of one of the two sides/turrets. I noticed this on the return to Canaveral on the 9th as well, but didn't note which side. Currently exhaust is only coming from the poor side.

Anyone else notice that she's still only running 13-14 knots?  I guess the problem isn't a simple fix.

Whichever side the "smoke" is coming from (and it's frequently hard to tell) has nothing to do with whether or not one propulsion motor is working or not.  There are 6 diesel engines, and two boilers that all exhaust up the stack, and it is a common arrangement to have the two boilers and 2 diesels exhaust on one side, and 4 diesels on the other.  Leaving port, you only need 2-3 diesels, and it is "engineer's choice" as to which engines to run.  All the diesels power all the electrical services equally, there are no "port engine" that supplies the port propeller.

As I said, this is classified by the surveyors as a "repair at next practicable time" (whenever the ship gets materials staged, manpower arranged, and it doesn't adversely affect the ship's business (schedule)), or a "repair at next scheduled drydock".

RCCL has always been more generous in inuring expenditures making the company less profitable and increasing the cost for all cruisers.  We were on the Anthem to Bermuda about 18 months ago which got diverted to New England/Canada because of a hurricane. We got 50% refundable OBC. Nice gesture, but totally unnecessary. We knew we signed a contract, that the contract allowed the cruise line to change itineraries, and that we were sailing in hurricane season. We expected nothing. And we would prefer that the cruise lines enforce their contracts and not bend over to every person who cries about a "ruined cruise" and demands compensation. We have been on multiple rescheduled cruises. We have had 2 cruises cancelled this year. We take it all in stride.
