The closest bar to the main dining rooms is usually the casino.

There is a bar inside main dining room on 3 (at least on Oasis)...right by where they check you in for MTD

The original question was regarding shorts in dinning rooms (sic) and the responses are referring to the MDR.

I have recently downloaded the RCI App ready for my upcoming cruise and have been looking at the dining options. I note that Chefs Table and Chops Grill both state Attire - Formal. The other speciality restaurants are Attire - Smart casual.

Are these dress codes enforced? It doesn't state it is just a suggestion or a recommendation. I am interested to know if the first two are formal, especially on Formal nights, or whether the same attitude of wearing whatever one is comfortable in applies here too.

On Grandeur the R Bar is not far from the entrance to the first level of the MDR (across the centrum) and the Schooner Bar is just above the second level of the MDR.  So, there are bars close to the entrance, but not just outside the doors.

We have seen shorts in the MDR at dinner, but we don't do it.

i can see at evening meal but not for breakfast or lunch i'm in  a wheelchair so i wont be going to buffets i'm on level 3 and i think there is a dining room on that level not far from me. Do you know what kind of bar is at the entrance ot restaurant

I've been used to a bar on the approach to MDR on most ships I've been sailed, but not necessarily right at the entrance.  Checking the deck plan on Royal might show you.

Is it practical for you to carry a light blanket on your chair, maybe behind your back or in a cinch sack?  You could then cover your legs for the meal, maybe that would be enough.  I always find MDR chilly myself 🙂

Maybe I'm old fashioned and over the hill but I just think it is disrespectful to other passengers to wear anything other than what you would wear to a nice restaurant for dinner.  I realize nowadays, it's a 'me first' thing and no one can tell someone else what to do but what happened to good manners?   I know, I know, people are on vacation and they want to do and wear whatever they want without regard to anyone else.  You won't see me or DH in the dining room in play clothes. Just my humble opinion.

I don't disagree that such sentiment would be nice.  However, you are correct that you are old fashioned.  In today's society, people are sadly celebrated for being completely lazy slobs anytime and anywhere.

Heck, Old NavY has made an entire industry out of convincing people that the "I just stumbled out of bed" look it totally reasonable!

I've just returned from HOTS and sadly there is no dress code enforced. Even on formal night when my boyfriend was in a lux and me a formal dress, please were in the MDR with shorts, t-shirt and sandals on. Some people simple don't care how scruffy they look.

Who decides what a nice restaurant is?  Maybe people are wearing what they would wear to a nice restaurant at home.  For some Golden Corral, Olive Garden, and Red Lobster would be considered nice restaurants - they aren't fast food.  We do have some local independent restaurants that are a notch above these, but at all of them we would be comfortable wearing jeans and even shorts in the summer months (not gym shorts).  Growing up we would never dream of wearing jeans to church, but now it is commonplace (I still can't, but that's me), and even sometimes shorts.

I do think it is disrespectful to ignore the host's dress suggestion so we follow the guidelines and change in our cabin after if we want more comfy clothes.  I do think there are clothing options that can be neat and appropriate to the intent of the MDR without following the letter of the guidelines.  There is a difference between play clothes and Bermuda shorts with a polo.

That's a pretty big stretch. If someone really thinks of Golden Corral as a "nice restaurant", do you really think they're going to walk into the MDR or one of the specialty restaurants and think "Hey! this looks just like Golden Corral!"?

I wouldn't think of the Golden Corral as a nice restaurant.  With that said the Olive garden near us is as nice or nicer than any cruise ship dining room I've seen and probably has a better wine selection.

No difference. Any grown man wearing a ball cap indoors is basically proudly announcing his arrested development and forever status as a man-child.

Nope. While I would never wear a hat to a restaurant (unless just in the bar portion), I wear a baseball hat regularly indoors. I am a successful, upper middle-class, multilingual, highly educated person...and I fail to see how wearing a baseball hat detracts from any of them. And if someone thinks less of me because of it, that's more their problem than mine.

You forgot to mention your attitude.  Baseball caps are not meant to be worn indoors.  It's just not good manners.

My manners and my attitude are fine. Just because they differ from yours doesn't mean mine are wrong and yours are right.

I find they cut you a bit more slack if you are in a wheelchair

I did not know everyone determines what good manners are.  So if the guy burping at dinner decides it is good manners, then it is ok?

never seen any etiquette reference that says hats are ok inside, except fashion hats

https://emilypost.com/advice/hats-off-hat-etiquette-for-everyone/

i guess im old. No hats inside. Take hat off to shake hands, including after golf.
