Theft from cabin safe on Anthem

Recommended Posts

We returned from a cruise on Anthem on 3/15/19. I discovered this morning that a box containing valuable jewelry had been stolen from a larger bag of jewelry that I had locked in my cabin safe. Theft occurred on deck 13, sometime during the cruise. There is no other explanation. Thief chose the most valuable jewelry, or course. Beware!!!

Did you check that you had everything before you left the ship?  Did you carry the jewelry off the ship with you or did you put it in your luggage that you left outside your cabin?

You notice that all your valuable jewelry is gone.

First thing you do is get on the internet, join this website, make your first post, just to warn others.

I bet it in the end it turns out you forgot to bring it with you.....

Yes, of course. I've been on about 50 cruises. I hand carry my jewelry always. It had to be stolen from my cabin safe.

Did you contact RC?

Yes, but it was very difficult to get direct answers. I must file a report with Port Authority Newark police. I have no real hope of getting my jewelry back. I posted for the first time ever to warn others of the danger. This is my first such experience is 20+ years of cruising.

I wore it on the cruise. It was stolen from my safe.

That valuable and you didn't check before you left the ship?  I'd have been checking mine daily, especially for pieces that held value to me (more sentimental and personal than monetary)

Theres no other explanation other than the room steward I would think. Or perhaps maintenance who I believe has to be escorted into a room (but I'm just speculating on that).

Now I have questions. You said it was locked in the safe. I don't doubt you think that but are you positive. When I lock stuff in our safe I'm totally OCD. Check it multiple times. Have the SO do it as well.

Now are you saying you locked it in there at the beginning and went to get it at the end and we're surprised it was gone? Whats the timeline? Once you get off the boat I would think your ability to investigate anyone of interest is out the window.

You must be frantic with concern.  Sorry you have to feel this way at the end of your vacation.  We've done over 240 cruises and never had this happen.  I had no idea that a room stewart has any access to the locked safe.  I've had to call maintenance in to open mine on a few occasions.  They would not come unless someone was in the cabin; and then we had to sign and date  the access.

I hope this turns out to all be a mistake for you and your jewelry is found soon.

If the safe was locked and they had to open it to get your jewelry out, then when it was closed, it would require a pin.  If you always locked and unlocked it, how the heck could someone get into it, and shut it unless they knew your pin?  If they used a key and not a pin, I'm pretty sure it doesn't store the last pin number.  Just by opening it, a new pin has to be put in to relock it.

It's also been reported that security has to come actually unlock a locked safe, but regardless, the pin is the issue here.  OP, please search everywhere.  There's more than one case where posters state theft only to find their item later.

I'm also not going to go into it, but thieves usually grab and go.  They don't take the time to go through to find the "most expensive" item because they don't want to get caught.  They also usually take cash.

I would look for another explanation.  If they could get into to a locked safe, which is a big if, why would they look thru a bag and a box to find the "good stuff".  Too much time and some one could walk in.  They would just grab the whole bag.  If they wanted it to look undisturbed, they would have left the box as well.  Just does not sound right.

We do travel with jewelry and watches.  Why else would we have them, especially since we do dress up for formal nights.  Everything is insured and never a problem in a hotel or cabin safe.

OP, might you have worn the jewelry that was in the box, then at the end of the evening, took it off and put it back in the box and maybe forgot to put the box back in the safe?  I can more understand somebody (the steward, a passer-by, some other maintenance person) stealing it if it was just sitting out.  But as others have mentioned, stealing it from the safe then re-locking the safe with your PIN is a whole other thing.

This is not what was stated in the OP. Read again.

The more likely scenario than theft from the safe is one of the following:

1. The box was not returned to the larger bag. It instead fell from the counter, bed or whenever the box was before returning to the bag, and seeing the box was gone, assumed that the box was placed on the bag. The box is now under a bed, behind a cabinet, or some other unseen place. If this happened, someone may find it. If it is the cabin steward, it will be turned in. If a passenger on a following cruise, it might be turned in. (You would be surprised at what I have found in various places in the cabin that was left behind from previous occupants of the room).

2. The box was actually not placed where it was originally packed and is somewhere else in the bag (especially if the bag has numerous compartments.

3. During the unpacking today, the box was removed or fell out.  It might be under the bed, under a dresser, in the closet.  Look around.

In any case, the possibility that someone broke into your cabin, cracked your safe, and knew exactly where to dig for the valuable piece is slim to none for the crew. Chances are higher if you include any cruise companions.

Sorry for your loss but I would never bring expensive or sentimental jewelry on any vacation or cruise. Not really fair to blame your room stewart. I don't think they would jeopardize their jobs by stealing your jewelry.Wear your costume jewelry on a cruise-no one will notice it isn't real.

If you flew, maybe the TSA opened your bag and took it out.  I have had them search my bags and not put a notice in that they did.  Why so sure a room steward did it?  When was the last time you wore your jewelry?  Knowing that would give you a better time frame of when you think someone broke into your safe and took your jewelry.

I agree.

I have seen articles in the UK press where hotel room and ships cabin safes have been opened with certain numbers.

Where this option falls apart is you would have had to use your pin to open the safe and would have realised straight away if someone had relocked your safe with a different number.

Agree with others here.  Sad for the OP that they cannot find their jewelry but doubt it was the cabin steward stealing it.  How many posts have been on CC with people finding things left in the cabin by previous occupants especially in the safe.  Unless you shine a light in the safe or run your hands all over the bott9m it's very easy to miss something.  I can't count the number of times I put something somewhere safe and then forgot where that was only to find it days or weeks later.

Hoping that your jewelry turns up soon.  Thanks for the reminder to keep track of items when on vacation.
