Elevator usage by ADA persons

My daughter is confined to a wheelchair and so her and I must use an elevator, unfortunately. We have experienced people run in front of us to get on the elevator before us (knowing we were ahead of them waiting) making us having to wait for another elevator. I think that anyone (disabled or not) can use the elevator if they need to or so wish to, BUT I think it should be first come first serve and everyone needs to respect that. People shouldn't get on if others were waiting before them. There are enough elevators for all, but people just need to wait their turn and respect those in front of them. Everyone waits, everyone gets on even if you are running late for something (you should have left earlier). Who knows those waiting could be late for something too, but everyone just needs to wait another 30 seconds to a couple of minutes for next elevator. But there are so many rude ones and people will also say, "oh sorry, there isn't any more room" when clearly there is. I just hope our next two cruises will be a better experience than our first one, especially with the elevators! And yes, we always left a little earlier than necessary because of elevator issues. Happy Cruising to you all!

And then there are the rude people who insist on cramming themselves into the elevator when there clearly is not enough room

'Yes and then they can't understand respecting ones personal space. I have removed my daughter and I from an elevator before because of that. If your bottom hangs over my daughters' chair because you think you can fit and just have to be on this specific elevator at this moment or come on and think its okay to use my daughters chair to lean up against and or for balance as they hang over her   - that is just beyond rude.  Then they think I am overreacting because we get off and I nicely state why when asked. I don't mind getting off and waiting for another one if that is what needs to be done for my daughter. Once I asked, "how would you feel if my butt was in your face or I drape myself over you and that is what you have to look at". I then said, "its called respecting ones personal space". A lady said, "that doesn't apply on elevators". What my daughter endures sometimes is so unbelievable, I feel bad but do my best to protect her and keep her in a more respecting atmosphere..

Still waiting for an answer as to how it would be determined who can ride this special elevator or not.  Who would control it?  How would they know if somebody qualifies to ride it or not?

I was hoping for something more than just "a smart person can figure this out".

Just put a handicap sign.

Geez!  Are the elevators always this crowded?

Not always, but yes, they are at times..  The aft and forward elevators are not as crowded as the middle ones for the floors that have aft, middle and forward.

Wow. The worst we have had is people holding on my son's chair for support.  I do think it is disrespectful that people seem to think its ok to hold on the chair but my main concern is I don't know when they last washed their hand.

Even worse they jolt the chair and send pain racing through your body.

I cannot think of one Royal ship that has three banks (aft, mid, forward) of elevators?

,When I worked in long term care and I took patients out to eat or shopping or the movies. They loved any attention they got, One little boy was a sticky mess! He was a curious little boy as they usually are asking my patient why you in  this chair , why can't you walk, why, why why...lol The Mom tried to pull him off but my guy said please don't. You can use these situations as learning tools also. I know this was a child but as we see adults don't know any better either, sadly! This was the high light of my patients day! A please don't lean on her chair or Jostle her . Thank you, should do! PS. Thanks to this patients lousey driving of his electric wheelchair I no longer have big toe nails..lol My favorite patient of all time what a character! 🙂

Yes, exactly! We have that too or when someone comes up and immediately starts touching my daughter before I have time to tell them "please don't" but then I say it immediately then. Yes, the germs is what I definitely worry about since she is medically fragile! And if they are dirty, etc. I carry wipes and always wipe her chair or tray (if she has it on) and someone touches it. I feel that the older I get the more sensitive I am to "touch" (both ways)...

Oh that would be bad. Yes, they do that to my daughter to or run into her because they weren't paying attention but I can only imagine how it makes her feel. I am sorry you go through that...

You must be talking about a different cruise line.  What Royal Caribbean ship has three elevator banks?

We don't carry wipes with us. We use the Purcell  hand sanitizer dotted about the ship.

How often do you have to wait for an elevator on a cruise because there is not enough room for your wheelchair? Can you take the stairs? I am forced to wait for the kindness of strangers or ram them with my chair or scooter, I choose the former, more patient route. Yet, I have waited and watched others older and more ill than I wait and wait while people who CAN take the stairs consume the space.  When I could walk I took the stairs, it was faster and far less frustrating, but I cannot now, and there are lots more like me. We like cruising because it is a little more independent than most travel.

How fair is this current policy? From my view it isn't

I think the biggest issue is this. I use a scooter and sometimes I’m at an Elevator waiting and no ones there then several people come and rush to the elevator and then there’s no room for me. This has happened to me several times.  I don’t mind waiting at all if I get to an elevator bank and people are all ready there waiting. I’ll wait my turn with no problem. It’s the people who run ahead of you even though you been there waiting that pisses me off

Sadly happens to all of us but it isn't the norm.  Rude people are everywhere.

Once in a while an elevator will open closer to someone who just got there while I have been waiting for several minutes.  They squeeze into the now packed elevator leaving me to wait for another ride.  It doesn't happen often but when it does its usually people older than me who have their own sense of entitlement.

Is it a problem?  Sure.  Is it worth developing a solution?  Not really.

Short of handing out numbers like at a meat counter in a deli we have to rely on fellow members of society doing the right thing and there are a small portion of them that are selfish and entitled.
