We've talked about how awful it is what they did on the Getaway, right?

So if you want to sit in a deck chair in a quiet area for two mornings a cruise what are the options?

I'd suggest The Waterfront if quiet is important.

If sunshine is important, there are usually empty loungers away from the pool area. Sometimes, one deck above the pool area is a great option.

Both are no cost.

10 Ten reasons to splurge and get a Vibe pass on Getaway

10. Costs less than many tourist trap excursions people spend money on

9.   No worries about chair hogs

8.   Servers can deliver 3 cheese ziti with a smile

7.   No screaming kids playing in the hot tubs

6.   Get away from the crowds

5.   Look down at the Haven people and their sundeck and those poor souls with NO deck bar

4.  Did I mention the 3 cheese ziti?

3.  Best views from deck 20

2.  Enjoy the waiter service

1.  Sleep till noon and still score an awesome chair!

I think it’s so one can have the amenities of a large ship and the service of a more elite line. It’s pretty brilliant, and I understand the allure, but I also think you have a point there. When they start taking away the pleasures of the ship away from the masses to give to the few, there is a line crossed, and if one REALLY can’t stand the masses, perhaps a mega ship isn’t the place to be.

The Haven is NOTHING like sailing on a luxury line. It is not even close. The majority of people on the luxury lines do not care about or want the so called amenities of the mass market lines.

You're probably thinking of Encore.

Actually have a legit question, if someone knows the answer to it:

On the Breakaway and Escape (only 2 other ships with Vibe I have been on), the Vibe passes are now $200+ and I want to say are limited to ~100 passes per cruise.

On the Getaway, with the expanded Vibe...how much are they going for, and how many passes are there?  Does anyone know?

Anyone?  Someone has to have been on the Getaway since the expansion right?

I am not following you logic that you if can't afford an extra $200 for a pass, you shouldn't cruise.  For many people, money is a finite resource.  They have to take care of daily living expenses (mortgage/rent, food, fuel, water, electric, saving for retirement etc).  So they may be able to afford to spend $2000 on a cruise but not $2200.  Back in the day, I could not afford a balcony cabin but could afford an inside cabin.  Using you logic I should not have cruised.

If the absolute maximum you can spend is $2000 my advice should be not to spend it all on a cruise. Why not spend $1800 instead and save the extra $200? (Then you could afford $200 for VIBE but decide not to do it.)

at the first cruise there was no passes sold, not sure how they do it at the 9 days baltics cruises? But the baltics cruises are port intensive, i´m not sure if they will sell them. at my baltic cruise last year i never saw someone there. it is a death deck space.

how do handle ncl the vibe in alaska? when encore is going there with the big vibe? do they sell passes in Alaska? do they sell them at bliss and joy in Alaska?

That's even more maddening...means a huge chunk of the upper decks were blocked off and not even used by anybody

One deck up from the buffet, Flamingo Grill was a fantastic, complimentary Cuban restaurant on the Getaway. It was the first meal I ever ate on a cruise ship. It did breakfast and lunch. For breakfast it was a traditional small buffet, but also had fantastic Cuban pastries (cheese and guava, for example). Lunch had amazing, fresh grilled chicken, black beans and rice, fried sweet plantains, fried yucca, and some other stuff I’m probably forgetting. Maybe ropa vieja or a pork dish. I can’t remember what they had for desserts because the plantains were always my dessert, but there was probably some tres leches cake or flan.

I think it lasted 2-3 years after launch before it was converted to a paid venue. That was my first lesson in the Way of NCL.

They had flan and 3 leches for dessert. I just came back from the 1st Baltic and Scandinavian sailing of the season. Margaritaville was empty the entire sailing.

I totally agree: that is why they have so many different types of cabins, have Haven and offer vibe passes to those who want to spend the money. Comments like we shouldn't cruise if we can't afford a Vibe is like saying we should not go to an upscale steak or sea food restaurant if we can't afford the most expensive thing on the menu or we shouldn't eat in Ocean Blue if we can't afford to pay the up charge for Lobster.

You say "to those who want to spend the money", not "to those who can afford it". I do think that someone who can't afford the most expensive thing on an upscale restaurant probably shouldn't go there. I don't say that everyone shall order the most expensive thing but if you can't afford it it's probably better to save the money.

If the absolute maximum you can spend on a cruise is $2000 it's probably better to book a $1800 cruise and save the extra $200.

Didn't realize that was where it was now...thought it was down in Miami.  Would be curious if they lower the price and how many more passes they sell.  If they up from say 100 to 300, and keep it at $200 a pop...$60k a cruise.  That's a lot of extra income...

We've sailed on eleven NCL cruises.  Six have been in Haven by winning bids, not directly booked into Haven.  We have never even laid a towel on a lounger in the Haven sundeck.  It's a great place for quiet time but we're in our 60's and get enough quiet time at home.  On the away class ships our favorite place to be outside is the Spice H2O.  Free,  adults only, a bar and food buffet.  Far more on offer there than on the Haven sundeck.  And we can always find a seat in the shade or under an umbrella.  As far as we're concerned, they can expand all they want as long as they leave the Spice H2O the way it is.  It's the one place we miss when sailing on other class ships.

Spice H2O is not on the Encore so the trend is starting there too.

The Waterfront won't stay that way for long.

I agree with gardengirl2011, why not travel on a luxury cruise line for the amount of money that you pay for the Haven.

Because NCL does a lot of other things right. They do suites right, great entertainment, wonderful staff and they sail out of NY. No one else has the Haven, even MSC.

Yep, I sail NYC because they're year-round out of NYC.

But I refuse to set foot on the Bliss, Encore, Getaway, and I'll add Escape and Breakaway to the list if they close off the same upper sun decks. Anthem of the Seas is RIGHT across the river, and she looks like a beautiful ship.

You're on notice, Del Rio.

Anthem is better than the Breakaway in many ways, the 9 day cruises are great.

Hi

Just wanted to point out that if you were paying attention, on this site there are many people including myself who have been cruising regularly since the early 80's.

Without thinking too hard most of these people are older. While I guess I could be considered to be unemployed, it is of my choosing, most people call it retirement. Since my time is my own, I guess some could think I have "tons of free time", but I don't necessarily see that as bad, at least not yet. 😃 After I get all my chores done, I always wonder how I found time to go to work for so many years.

Perditax is referring to me. I have reported her for harassment numerous times, and she is all bitter and twisted about it. I only keep posting because I know it annoys her.

He's on notice?     Posting tip:   If you are mad at someone and the cruise line like you have posted a few times I would suggest you don't follow it up with a thread about how you got a good deal and are sailing NCL to Bermuda.   🙂

It annoys everyone.  If you're not going to add anything to the discussions on these boards please go away.

A) Only for people who can afford them

B) If you can get them

and C) at the expense of the rest (Majority) of the PX

Try looking at it this way: We don't go to the casino or any of the shows, so could we be given a discount for that?

Just saying, maybe their thinking is if you want a quiet deck hangout you can pay for it, but if you don't care for it, you don't have to, and can save your money. sort of like the Haven. You pay an arm and a leg, but if that isn't what you want/need you can save thousands and not do it.

I think they sell them, but I doubt that many people will pay to sit in the rain and cold wind which is what you often get. A lot of people tend to sit in the Cafe wearing polar fleece.
