Smoking on the ship

I’ve run/walked the track on pretty much all my cruises and I’ve never passed through a cloud of smoke. Just doesn’t happen, at least in my experience. And I’m sensitive to smoke so I’d spot it.

I realize there are those that are more sensitive than I am, but I think we also go a bit overboard (pun intended!) on our descriptions of smoke exposure.

You've been very lucky, indeed. It's always a problem on the Solstice class ships in my experience. It was so bad on the Reflection last month that we (and others) took to walking back and forth on the starboard side of Deck 5. We missed the nicer view up top, but we could breathe much more easily.

I'm glad you've had better experiences.

I'm an early raiser and walk the track every morning starting around 6:AM for about 1.5 hours. There are a few smokers in the designated smoking area puffing and hacking away. They are far enough away from the track that I'm not walking thru a cloud of smoke. Yeah I can smell the stench but I'm a fast walker. I consider the smokers my incentive to stay healthy and glad I quit smoking 28 years ago. 😎

There had been some previous discussion about a decidedly radical approach to deal with rule-breaking smokers. Way beyond reporting, which prompted my last comment. I'm happy to see that the back and forth was removed.

When I read some of the posts in threads like this it makes me really happy my genetics didn’t fail me in the allergen/sensitivity department. Some of these reactions to what are likely trace amounts of irritants sound like a horrible way to live. Thoughts with those of you who have been dealt that hand 😞

You unfortunately have an unusual problem. Can you go to any public places? Malls, schools airports, etc.  do you travel with an epipen. I assume you must.  Hope you can enjoy a vacation!

Yes, I go to public places.  I avoid the cosmetic areas in the stores and get myself away quickly from anyone bathed in cologne.  I do carry an epipen and Benadryl is my best friend.  Usually a children's chewable can sometimes nip a reaction in the bud.  I have often moved seats in cinemas....You learn to cope.

I do not want to bust your bubble, but my allergies, hay fever, food allergies-etc didn't start until I was over 50!  So they can come at any age!

Yes, that is true they can start at any age. They can also disappear at any age!

Celebrity takes smoking violations very seriously.

While aboard Infinity, we smelled cigarette smoke in the hallway outside the aft-facing AQ cabins. As we arrived at our cabin we smelled the smoke coming from a cabin next door. I alerted our steward who immediately pounded on the door even though the do not disturb sign (or whatever the wording) was displayed. The steward gave them a surprisingly stern warning that they could be subject to a fine and even disembarked from the ship. This isn't hearsay. I witnessed the discussion firsthand.

Guess what? They did it again. This time the Hotel Manager spoke to them, then handed them a letter stating if they were caught a third time they would be fined and disembarked at the next port.

Well, they were caught smoking in their cabin a third time and they were kicked off the ship at the next port.

Happy ending.

When I was young, I had bad hay fever and had to have shots. Grew out of it and when I went for my first Navy flight physical, ‘forgot’ to mention i had it. All went well for many years. Now I’m, lets say, mature and its come back. Crazy.

Very true, as a child and teenager I suffered from very bad asthma, so bad that on a couple of occasions my doctor drove me home from his surgery, then when was about 18 it disappeared completely and have never had an attack since then although I do keep an inhaler handy when I get a chesty cold

I too am lucky with my genetics and have lived with a smoker for nearly 30 years

Rules are rules and my wife was most upset when they banned smoking on the balconies but she obeys the rules and even refuses to smoke in the casino as its inside adhering to smoking areas to chat with her fellow leppers

I however just don't get how people can be affected when people say some one is smoking on a nearby balcony (EVEN IN PORT)

Yes its WRONG, Yes I'll even give you that its a potential Fire Hazard but really does it INFECT YOUR BALCONY AND CABIN?

Actually it does affect your balcony.  We were on an NCL ship in a foward facing suite and the room stank of cigarette smoke!  Clearly the person in the suite prior to us smoked and even if not in the room, their clothes and possessions carried the stink.  Hope that your wife remains well and that she gives up smoking soon!

We will disagree on the Balcony 😉

In respect of your NCL Cruise I would have rejected the Cabin if it stank there is no excuse for that

As for my wife giving up Hell and freezing over springs to mind but appreciate your thoughts and wishes

If you are a non-smoker, yes, it does affect you while you are on your balcony.  The wind carries the smoke - it doesn't stay in place on the rule breakers balcony.  Not pleasant if you detest the smell of smoke or have asthma as I do.  One big whiff can send me into an asthma attack.  Also, the smoke can come into your cabin when you open the door.  It does affect others, and thinking that it doesn't is absurd.  I have paid good money to enjoy my balcony experience.  I should not be subject to the smoke of others, period.

Why on earth would that "burst my bubble" 😄

Genetic testing indicated I likely don't have a whole lot to worry about. All good on this end.

We will have to agree to disagree

Except for " I should not be subject to the smoke of others, period"

Some people are just more sensitive to smell than others.  Back when smoking was allowed on balconies I was sitting out on the balcony with my daughter while at sea.  My daughter commented she smelled smoke, I called her crazy.  We then went to look and sure enough someone a few cabins down was leaning against the rail smoking.  Just because you can't smell it doesn't mean others can't.

I do get that but "stinking out the whole cabin" REALLY!

I'm with sxphil here. I absolutely believe a whole cabin reeked of smoke due to folks previously smoking in it. A cigarette in a windy environment with a divider of sorts is highly unlikely to cast anything more than an occasional faint whisp into an adjacent balcony.

Not to say I endorse smoking on balconies (I don't), nor do I disagree that it's disrespectful as hell and should be stopped via a complaint to staff. But hyperbole is a bit rampant in this thread... and I hate smoke.

I agree it is not common but can see for some people in certain cabin configurations and depending on how close the smoker us that it could happen.

Yes, it absolutely does impact others.  Smoke is a migraine trigger for me and many other people.  But no matter, you'll just "agree to disagree" 🙄

Nothing to do with winning at all.  You have been so emphatic on here that it just cannot impact anyone to the extent some are saying it's way over the top.  Having kids and grandkids with intolerance, no not allergies, to things others would never think about it's opened my eyes to what others may experience that I don't.  Is it the norm in most cases no but much more common than a perfect storm to many out there unfortunately.

So I will leave at your words - yup let's agree to disagree.
