People late to ship

When Captain Johnny was on the Freedom some years ago, we always got a kick out of his usual speech about people coming back to the ship late.

He would announce to pax  when we got to a port of call...."If you are going to be late coming back to the ship, be sure to take a camera with you, so you will have a beautiful picture of the aft end of the Freedom as she leaves you behind at the dock".  He got his point across and did not wait long for late comers.

Does he still do that? 😎

I believe he was also the captain that would play "All By Myself" at the end of his warning announcement... 😄

"Pier Runner Betting"

They should start charging people when they are late.  They can see how much people are willing to spend to get back on the ship.

This could become a new game with an online betting app which we would be trying to determine how much someone is willing to spend and who misses the ship.

I don't remember that one...but it sounds like him.  😉   Wasn't he the one that quoted his "Asian friend" also?

I think the worst one is Cozumel...where the very inebriated folks coming from Senior Frog's etc...are stumbling down the pier.  Quite the comic show.  And some "interesting costumes".

Nassau is a good one as well - I think the short stay there catches people off guard... 🙂

It seems in the old days, before computer records of who's on board, the ship tended to sail on time and people were left behind.  Since we now "bong" on and off, they have an accurate record of who's not on board.  During a Captain's Q & A session on Freedom a number of years ago, the Captain explained that they will page the missing people (we've all heard that).  Then they will contact local cab companies, the police, and hospitals.  If someone is confirmed in on their way, they'll consider how long and try to stay.  However every minute they delay is costly to the company in additional fuel to make the next port, etc.  So it's important to take the number of the ship or port agent with you if you do your own tour so that you can call with an ETA if you are running late.
I will say, in the old days "runner watching" was quite the "sport," especially in Cozumel where the bars are many.  😎

Years ago we watched a cab pull up. The driver walked around to the passenger door on the other side. He pulled a guy out and dropped him.

Got in his cab and left. Hopefully the guy had prepaid.

We watched him try to get on his hands and knees several times.

After watching him for a while,  the guys working the gangway walked over, grabbed him by the arms and dragged him to the foot of the gangway.

They conferred for a few minutes, then used a  walkie talkie and a staff member or security  came down and went through the guy’s pockets.

Then they dragged him onboard.

He never even flinched the entire time.

I like learning from others’ bad experiences.

Drinking all day might be fun, but the consequences aren’t 🤢

Sometimes a cruise sponsored excursion is late, so the other late people get a break.

My husband had a dive in Belize and when he had not returned by the sail away time, I went to the dive shop and asked if the excursion was back. They said it was not back. I went back to the cabin to wait and not too long after that, I noticed the ship was moving. Fortunately, my husband arrived at our cabin soon after the ship sailed. He said they actually drove them down the pier to the ramp to board, they were so late. We missed the early dinner time we were scheduled for and ate in the Windjammer.

We were on a ship sponsored shore excursion a long time ago that was more than a half hour late do to circumstances beyond the control of any of the passengers. The only time we've ever been late but we weren't as seasoned as we are now and we thought for sure the ship was going to be long gone by the time we got back. Thankfully it was still there. Ever since then we only take ship sponsored excursions so in case we are late the ship will wait for us.

Buses do not wait, trains do not wait, planes do not wait. With the exception of cruise line sponsored excursions, nor should they wait.

The “I will get there when I get there” attitude astounds me. I say leave them.

Planes do wait at times.  When a connecting flight is delayed, from the same airline.  So similar to a ship's excursion.

But I agree with your last line.
