i hope the original op reads this. they seem to think booking and getting to a hotel in a foreign country is  difficult as well as dangerous.

thanks for your input, again it confirms that great minds think alike.

btw: we are booked into a 2 bedroom suite april on the jade and a 2 bedroom next november on the star. i am aware that the jade doe not have a dedicated bar a restaaurant, and the star has no haven, but the extra perks are the same, and im looking forward to finally get back to cruising'

9 have been canceled since march 2020

Where does he indicate the concerns you describe about difficult and dangerous travel?

I don’t indicate any concerns for travel being difficult or dangerous.  I have been fortunate to travel the world on business.  That makes it easier for me.  I book my own flights and hotels 99% of the time.  Unless the deal with the cruise line is great which usually it is not.

Sorry if I indicated something else.

Cruise well.

On air travel, in 43 years of cruising; I have never used the cruise line.  Not once.  I always come in the day before and been booking airfare for business for over 40 years.  I use my Airline Points whenever possible.

On hotels.  I also have never allowed a cruise line to book a hotel for me with the exception of Oceania on a Europe cruise. That was a bargain and included transfers.  All other hotels my favorite site was Priceline when you could bid.  Now that that is gone, I use all the sites you suggested.

I hope that answers your request.

Cruise well.

We have also never arranged transportation or hotels through a cruise line.

For one thing, we prefer to select our own hotels, and we prefer to select our own specific flights, including which airline or routing.  We also use awards to travel in premium (business or first) class cabins.  At our ages, our bodies are not particularly unforgiving about sitting upright for extended time, in addition to the other stresses of travel.

Another reason is that we often arrange for extra time before or after a cruise, for some sightseeing or for a different part of the same trip.

If we are in a particularly special destination city, chances are that we'd like to be in a great location... near the museums or on the beach or with a terrific view of those mountains, etc.

Finally, *we* want to "control" our reservations.  Any problems?  Changes?  WE will make the new arrangements, or at worst, our Travel Agent will.  He knows enough about our preferences that we are not likely to be disappointed.  He also arranges our awards travel, so that would automatically be through him anyway.

Now, when we were younger and on more of a budget, we may have wanted to bundle things if it saved money, and we probably wouldn't have wanted to pay for hotels in the best locations, etc.

So a lot of this depends upon one's specific situation and preferences.

We also very carefully select our cabin or suite, which is probably obvious from what I have already written!

🙂

I have hope again! 😀😃

All 5 rapid tests say negative today and the 4 pcr we did Sunday came negative so just waiting on the new pcr tests from today and hoping this means we are not "GOING" to get sick. We need to all test negative Saturday morning. I'm not worried about my son flying in because he had Covid at the beginning of January. Our 14 year old is still sniffly etc. But her rapid was negative.

We are waiting on the pcr from today and then we are repeating rapids on Thursday morning. John delayed his flight til Friday morning so we will drive to the airport pick him up and head to Cocoa Beach where we rented a apartment style beach house. It's 18 minutes from the port. I'm so afraid that it will still go wrong but chances are we have already had it or just aren't going to get it.

FYI: Hannah and her sisters had just finished their 2nd dose of Pfizer on the 10th so it was really surprising when she got sick. And despite the fact that J and J boosters weren't needed til 6 months in the past apparently the CDC says now to get them b4 2 months. I read it over and over I was so surprised. Mine was Dec.3 and hubby Nov. 24. We will boost with Pfizer soon after we get home.

[BTW- when John got Covid for the 2nd time I laughed so hard after realizing he wasn't joking...why!? Because I harassed him all of December and beginning of January up til he was positive (he caught it on his 22nd bday. Jan. 3 so a few days later the result. It really hit him fast. I think 2 days after).]

Is it ok to start getting excited again!? I won't feel perfectly safe until they give us the all clear and we are headed to The Haven Fast Track (I think that's a decent name for it)!!!

Are you able to cruise?

@Sthrngary Thank you. I used the Letter to the Butler that you shared her on CC. When DH and I meet our butler, Teresa I gave her the letter. To my surprise she seemed very happy to have gottent the letter. She read the letter while visiting with us.

While the Haven was great, the jury is still out on wether is worth the high cost. (No buyers remorse, glad we did it)

Teresa was great, she brought us more food than we could eat. Every morning she would bring us fruit, sweet rolls, pot of coffee for me and a pot of hot water and hot chocolate for Joe. We stated in the letter we liked cookies at night an milk. She brought way to many cookies. In fridge she had a piture of water, lemon aid and apple juice and a glass of cranberry juice. I had put in the letter that we liked carrot cake, coconut cake, key lime pie and cheese cake. NOT expecting to actually get these. Well Teresa checked, daily the MDR's desert menus. On top of the cookies, we received, Key lime pie, carrot cake, coconut cream pie and cheese cake. We also got  the routine afternoon snaks.

The Haven resturant is by far the BEST one on the ship. Joe is a pickey eater, just had the Steak at dinner and french dip for lunch. Surpised me when he stated he would book the Haven for the resturant only. The steak in the haven was good and cooked to the desired temp, each time. Went to Cagney's twice and both times the steaks were not cooked to the desired temp. (Medium well) Don't know what happend there, been to Cagney's multiple times with no issue.

There were only 853 passengeres on the Joy this past week. With this low number a couple of the Haven perks, were just not needed. Esccort to the theater was offered (some took up the offer). As for Joe and I we didn't. There was NO crowd waithing to get in. We just walked in a took a seat in the Haven area.

Esccorts off the ship at the ports - First port, we did go with the escort. There were no large groups of people waiting to get off.  All of the other ports, we just walked off when we got ready to go.

The outdoor area of the Haven would be a great place to escape the crowds on the pool decks.  However on this trip, there were no large crowds to get away from.

With all things considered, if the price is right, we'd do it again.

We were set-up for a north bound cruise Vancouver to Seward in May -

Too early - no shore excursions - no tie in with the Alaska RR - and then this

covid variant hit the fan - - -

Cancelled and moved to September but even that is awkward - told my TA

key your finger on the cancel and move button till June of 2023 -

Surfing the cancel and rebook time-line to avoid penalties - - - such a deal !

May simply chuck the whole Alaska thing and do a Panama Canal trip to see the

new B-I-G ditch.

All kinds of railroad trips planned including a Winnipeg to Churchill (polar bear express).

Planes trains cruise ships - travel in the blood !

For years I have written a letter to my butler and the Haven Concierge pre-cruise.  What I request has changed over the years.  The list is very personal to what would make my families cruising experience better.  Yes, I also put the entire weeks gratuity in the letter.

when you say " pre-cruise " do you send it to them " Pre" or are you writing letter before and handing it to them when you get into your room ? I think this a great idea !

Have fun, I'll sure be glad when this COVID %^&* has gone away, or at least significantly clamed down and not a "pandemic" anylonger.

When you are in the Haven, you communication with the Haven Desk pre-cruise on somethings.  That is a benefit that I don't want to be missed.  On the Butler letter, I write it and update pre-cruise then print it.  I put it in an envelope with the Butlers full gratuity.  I hand it to the butler on day one.

I did not used to do this.  I was looking for a way to do two things.  Have a better experience from butlers and not having to think to much once I got on the ship.

Cruise well.

Sthrngary - I appreciate all of your handiwork and advice that you have shared. I had a tequila question for you. You have mentioned 1942 a lot. Once you mentioned Cuervo 1942, but I don't think they make one. Don Julio makes a 1942 but that's not on the premium plus list. What 1942 are you referring to? I'm looking forward to some tequila tasting on board and would like to know.

I meant Don Julio 1942.  The best way to answer your question is with my story on this subject.  I got on the NCL Joy, in the Haven on November 27, 2021.  I always have a plan as most of you know.  I walked up to the Haven Bar and smiled at the Haven Bartender.  I gave him my key card which has a code of the type of drink package you have.  We had the Premium Plus package.  I asked, "I love tequila.  What tequila would you recommend that is really good?"  He smiled back at me and pulled down the Don Julio 1942 in the tall distinctive bottle.

From that point forward, that was my drink and I enjoyed it throughout the cruise.  I know it was not listed on the Premium Plus package.  That is why I approach my request the way I did.  That also tells me many other brands might not show up on that list but would or could be included.  Sometimes it is just the way you ask.  I had a great time then when I got home, order a bottle for my bar.

Cruise Well.

sthrngary: i'm amazed at the longevity of this thread. youve done an excellent job of explaining the pro's and con's of booking a haven.

ive said before, if i cant book a haven (or a suite if the ship has no haven complex per se)

my wife wont consider going

Although i have to admit, after my 1st stay  in a haven suite, ive become somewhat spoiled also.

keep up the good work, keep the haven flags flying, and hopefully someday we will book the same cruise and get together for dinner and drinks

Shalom.

Cruise Well.

We are on the joy currently.  It was worth it, for us, to stay in the haven.

The food at the restaurant is outstanding, haven’t eaten anywhere else yet, and during normal times it would be more impressive with the lounge and sun deck.

Currently, with limited passengers, it wasn’t necessary but nice to enjoy

all the perks so far.

The butler is not up to par and I can tell he may be going through a tough time and that’s ok for we don’t have many requirements.

Going to give him a request tomorrow and see how it goes.  He just gives off a vibe that makes him difficult to approach.  I’ll see what tomorrow brings!

The haven is likely as busy as it can be and the sun deck was full in the morning yesterday.  Could still get a seat but not not as easy as I had expected.

Everyone we interact with staff wise is super responsive in the haven.

Remember drink orders, meal requests are simple, and very happy with decision.

Thank you for your quick report.   We sail next on The Joy in our first Haven cabin.

Honestly, I am a little concerned about the Haven sun deck-- with the 30 cabins they switched to Haven and the upgrades being awarded it seems to have the potential to be overly crowded.  We have always gotten Vibe passes and did not plan to this sailing because of the Haven sundeck, but now I am re-thinking it .

NCL Haven or Celebrity Retreat Butlers can be hit or miss.  If this butler is simply not responsive, tell the Haven Desk.  Part of the issue is as the Haven Butlers have told me when I pressed them.  Many folks don't know they are not part of the normal gratuities program and have not provided those gratuities at the end of the week.

I know that and it is the reason why I write a letter and hand it to them when I get on the ship and in the letter with my requests is their full gratuities. I take a lot of heat for this however my results are so far 100% positive.  When in the past my Butlers were hit or miss.  Now every one has been on top of anything I wanted.

At this point you are on the cruise so I am not sure that strategy would work for you.  BTW, I was on the Joy at the end of November.  Allow me to give you some ideas knowing the ship does not have a lot of folks.

  1. Go Carts: Where on a full ship, getting a good time would be hard.  On a ship that is not fully booked, you can go anytime.  I did it once and it was fun.  Ask the Haven Concierge to book it for you.
  2. Lasor Tag:  This was a lot of fun but would have been more fun at night.  If you are into it, do it at night and again ask the Concierge for reservations.
  3. Main Shows: Not sure they are happening however here is my advice.  For Footloose, not a bad seat in the house.  The world is yours.  The other main show, sit as close to the front as possible.  We never do this however for what ever reason on this show, we did.  Fantastic.
  4. Beatles:  Don't miss it and get to the venue early.  I love these shows and the sequence the ship provides.
  5. Sugar Cane Bar: Go to this place during the day and meet one of the most entertaining bar tenders on the ship.  I forget his name but the moment you order a drink, you will never forget his personality.  At night, the two musicians in this bar are fantastic.
  6. Atrium Sinatra:  Don't miss the Sinatra show in the Atrium.  It was great.
  7. Beach Villa on the Private Island:  He is the deal.  If it was just my wife and I, I would have skipped it.  To expensive.  However we had four folks in our party so we went for it.  In the future, we will book this with some other guest to have a total of 6, split the cost.  If you do this, be careful.  The food and drinks which are extra can get out of hand.  Learn from me.
  8. The Local:  I can't believe I am saying this.  I loved it.  The wings and burgers.  Yes, my favorite restaurant was the Haven Restaurant; after a few days of it, I was ready for wings.  Everyone is different.
  9. Virtual Reality: Do the Formula car.  The rest of it was close but a miss. The old carnival games were fun thought.
  10. Main Pool: Go there, enjoy the funny pool games.  Don't lock yourself up in the Haven.  The key to the Haven is the "Best of Both Worlds".  Enjoy both worlds.
  11. Haven Restaurant: Lunch have the Carrot Cake, Dinner try the Prime Rib with a lobster tail on the side.  The Chocolate cake for desert is lovely. Before you go in, order and bring a drink in with and then when you sit, order your second drink.  Lunch takes a while so have some time to spend there or eat elsewhere.
  12. Horizon Lounge: My favorite place for coffee and a sweet.  I ate breakfast there most days.  Simple and good quality and super views.

Enjoy the rest of your cruise.

Cruise well.

Does Joy have more Haven cabins than Escape?  We were just on Escape with a full Haven and I don't think the sundeck was ever more than 50% occupied and usually much less.

Joy has 118 Haven staterooms.

Escape has 95 Haven staterooms.

Under current sailing conditions, it isn't really possible to know how occupied an area will be. We need to get back to normal sailing conditions to get a better idea.
