I had a similar incident a few years ago on the summit.  While walking in the hallway- I tripped over a tray of food, please people leave trays in your stateroom,!   I went to the  ships medical center via a wheelchair that they brought for me after my husband called to report the accident.  I was taken to sick bay- a nurse or assistant to physician x- rayed me.  The Dr. said my foot wasn't broken-  never examed me, just gave me pain pills.  Sent me away with a wheel chair and an  ace bandage.

 

When I got home, one of my sons, who is a physician, x-rayed me again as the foot still hurt- and it was fractured!  Perhaps Celebrity was afraid of a law suit!.

 

Hope you feel better, and of course when you get home, see your Dr.

 

PS never got a bill or report- as if the visit never happened.

It is not unusual for any fracture, of any of the bones, in the foot to not be visible for one to two weeks.    I am sure your orthopedic physician informed you of this and it was probably not Celebrity’s error.   Whenever they suspect a fracture of one or two of the small bones within the foot you will get a orthopedic boot.   When you come back for another check the break(s) should be visible.

However it was a metatarsal fracture and it looked visible on the xray I saw   I felt that  the ships Dr wasn’t the most knowledgeable nor interested.  In addition, the fact that I requested my medical records after the cruise and they weren’t to be found strange.

Update: Just saw orthopedic doctor in Guatemala City and he said I should have been told it was displaced fracture in the big toe joint, not just “cracked”. Original x-rays from the ship and ones done today show a chunk broken off and slipped down into the joint. Scheduled for surgery tomorrow afternoon. 
 

Have to say I’m pretty upset that I wasn’t shown the x-rays when it happened and I was misinformed about how severe it was.  I would have probably chosen to disembark and see an orthopedic in the ER in Florida that day. Cruise insurance would have paid for it in FL, now I’m going to be stuck with several thousand dollars worth of medical expenses. 
 

Anyone know what the right department at  Celebrity is to file a complaint about this?

I suggest you speak to your insurance company first and explain exactly what has happened. Despite the fact you are now home from your cruise your accident was during your period of cover. Not only may they be responsible for covering your medical costs they may also be willing to advise about filing a complaint.

 

Sincere best wishes that your surgery goes OK and that you are soon back on your feet.

 

It would be useful to others once you are feeling better if you could advise about the response of your insurance company and the response of Celebrity.

Deb- so sorry to read about your ordeal. Thanks for letting us know about the mistake reading your xray. Important info!

In the US, aren't most xrays read by a radiologist? Unless it's something glaring, I would think most generalists would have difficulty deciphering.

 

Were you able to see an orthopedist in Curacao? I kept looking for your post about this. I noticed in later photos you still weren't wearing a boot.

 

I don't know if this idea is feasible while at sea but we've had good luck using an app from the Cleveland Clinic called Express Care Online. Specialists are available for online consultations. They accept insurance too but we didn't try to use it. Can the ship's Dr transmit xrays electronically to another party for review?

 

I saw on tripadvisor you're from Raleigh. James Nunley at Duke is an outstanding foot specialist if you decided to postpone your surgery. If you went ahead with the surgery today, hope you have a successful outcome- please let us all know how you're doing when you feel up to posting again.

Had surgery today with spinal block in a top private hospital in Guatemala City. Never had that for surgery before, it was odd being fully awake the whole time. 
 

Piece that was broken off was actually in worse shape than they expected. It had to be removed completely and they found a cartilage tear in the joint as well. Ortho surgeon said it will look a bit odd but should heal well with minimal risk of arthritis setting in. If I had left it as-is and refused surgery, the broken slivers inside the joint would have caused significant pain and loss of movement eventually, and likely very bad arthritis in a few years. 
 

They are keeping me overnight as the spinal block took 6 hours to wear off. Should be released by noon on Friday. 
 

Have to avoid as much walking as possible first two weeks, and keep wrapped and in a broken toe shoe (not full boot) for total of 6 weeks or more, depending on my progress. 
 

Really did a number on it!

 

We will collect all the paperwork from the hospital and see what the cruise insurance says. But I suspect they will do their best to deny it, in spite of the fact that my surgery will cost about 1/3 or less of a US hospital. Not holding my breath. 
 

I should sleep now. Will be back later this weekend with more Edge review info! 🙂

Glad to hear there's a good private hospital in GC. Decades ago, I experienced care in a GC public hospital that treated the poor. Antigua is beautiful- you must enjoy living there.

 

Hope the cruise insurance comes through for you! I know the claims process for travel insurance is onerous- look forward to hearing if Celebrity's insurance is an improvement. 

 

I've read nice things on cruisecritic re: cruisers experience with Celebrity reps who accompany passengers on medical or hospital visits- hope you had a good experience in Curacao.
