harryw Posted January 25, 2020 #1 Share Posted January 25, 2020 As a borderline germophobe, I was disappointed to see that the dispensers were no longer outside the MDR. (Also removed from the Lido, which has the “sinks”.) I found them convenient and important. Was this a cost saving measure, or is there another method to this madness? RocketMan275 Posted January 25, 2020 #2 Share Posted January 25, 2020 It's commonly known that those dispensers were ineffective in controlling viruses (noro). In fact, their presence encourages people to avoid those measures that do control viruses, ie, washing with soap.
Cruising-along Posted January 25, 2020 #3 Share Posted January 25, 2020 What ship? The NS and Koningsdam both had the dispensers outside the MDR in Sept-Nov.
St Pete Cruiser Posted January 25, 2020 #4 Share Posted January 25, 2020 The hand sanitizer stations have been reduced, with the emphasis back to soap and water. I still like to use the sanitizer before entering the MDR and Lido as an added defense from contact with hand rails, elevators, etc.

Rare CruisingAndDiving Posted January 25, 2020 #6 Share Posted January 25, 2020 Nieuw Amsterdam 6 weeks ago still had them at both MDR and Lido. This must be a fairly new thing
harryw Posted January 25, 2020 Author #7 Share Posted January 25, 2020 I was just on the Konigsdam. i agree that it is a good second line of defense.
Homosassa Posted January 25, 2020 #8 Share Posted January 25, 2020 Use the soap and water at the sinks. The ineffective hand sanitizer will not be needed.
tamsno Posted January 25, 2020 #9 Share Posted January 25, 2020 No hand washing stations outside MDR, however. Better something than nothing.
marysb Posted January 26, 2020 #10 Share Posted January 26, 2020 The hand washing stations are pretty cool, and I used them a lot, noticed the crew used them too. It is unfortunate that they are not at the dining room. I carry a pocket sized purell to use in any restaurant after using a menu.
harryw Posted January 26, 2020 Author #11 Share Posted January 26, 2020 I always carry some hand sanitizer. I hope that the exercise room still has dispensers.

There's a washroom steps from the entrance to the dining room. Hardly 'nothing'. There's even a paper towel or tissue to use as a barrier when you open the door! Much more sanitary than the 'sanitizers'.
Rare Scrapnana Posted January 26, 2020 #13 Share Posted January 26, 2020 Dispensers are still on the Amsterdam outside the MDR and the Lido.
I like vacation Posted January 26, 2020 #14 Share Posted January 26, 2020 The Veendam had both at the Lido and Purell dispensers for the MDR last week.

DivotMaker Posted January 26, 2020 #17 Share Posted January 26, 2020 (edited) We just returned from an NCL cruise and they actually had a couple crew members outside the buffet saying "washy washy" as they attempted to spray everyone's hands. They also had hand washing stations a few feet away. Like some others, we always carry our own. RocketMan275 Posted January 28, 2020 #18 Share Posted January 28, 2020 https://www.foxbusiness.com/markets/purell-maker-receives-strict-warning-from-fda-over-sanitizers From the article: Federal health officials are calling on GoJo, the maker of Purell products, to stop making claims that its hand sanitizer is effective at eliminating diseases. In a letter, the Food and Drug Administration called out the company for posting several claims across Purell website pages and its social media platforms that the over-the-counter hand sanitizers could reduce the risk of illnesses including Ebola, norovirus, influenza and Methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA), which is an infection is caused by a type of staph bacteria. On the Veendam, this month, there was still a sign by the washroom door that said to use a paper towel or tissue to open the door. The problem was that the paper towel dispenser was replaced with a hand blow dryer. HAL had the little wash cloths to dry your hands by the sink.
summer slope Posted January 28, 2020 #20 Share Posted January 28, 2020 I use soap and water in the washroom, then wipe with the little cloth. Then use that cloth to open the door, prop the door open with my foot and then throw the cloth into the basket provided.

I did that one time and kicked a poor fellow who was entering the restroom at the time. He was quire elderly and I felt horrible about it. I apologized profusely. I still do it but I'm much more careful now!
