My original comment was made because I have friends who love MSC Yacht Club sailings and are very happy to share their photographs. They had all their meals [some dinners photographed to show the beautiful presentation]  in their dedicated Yacht Club restaurant. MSC's own YC blurb emphasises the dining experience 

 

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served in a fully dedicated restaurant, with sophisticated à la carte menus, ranging from deliciously healthy to superb indulgent.

 

 and reading past reviews of NCL's The Haven, plus NCL's dining guide pdf  which shows, where applicable,  all meals can be taken in The Haven Restaurant.

 

Celebrity have their Luminae restaurant for suite guests, again, all meals can be taken there.

Well, I think the class system is great.

 

We always travel QG, so don't have to mix with the riff-raff at meal times and watch them slurp their gruel and swill their beer out of bottles.

 

Neither do we have to watch them get out their accordions and penny whistles and dance jigs around the place.

 

As for their dress code, such as cloth caps and boots and their tattoos (and that's just the females), there's just nothing more to be said. No amount of rules will make any difference. It's just their class.

 

At least they know their place.

 

Keep the steerage gates firmly locked!

When I  had to dress up in the week I couldn't get out of it quick enough,  now I can slop around the house all week, dressing up makes a vacation a change. Vacations are all about being comfortable,  you choose your venue to suit your style at the moment.

I will enjoy my cruise. QM2 is not my destination, it is my ride.  I'm glad my cabin is aft and near hot tubs and pools!

I hope this thread has been useful to explain how the dress code works in practice. If you don't want to comply you won't be able to make use of all the facilities on the ship after 6pm.

By the way...  are the pools and hot tubs closed after 6pm?  Will I be able to walk from hot tub to my cabin in swim trunks?

Please keep in mind that I say this (a) grounded in my unabashedly working class existence and (b) as someone who has not yet traveled via Cunard, but has vacationed with other lines.
 

So, to finally answer your question: No, frankly; it isn’t classist. Classism implies looking down on people purely because of some amount of insurmountable socioeconomic distance. Shipboard travel such as this is irrefutably a luxury; neither you nor I would die if we couldn’t travel via Cunard or similar. The very fact that you consciously bought a luxury good (among other similar options you weighed) suggests that you have the privilege (financial wherewithal?) to do so — and makes it unlikely that you can’t afford to wear a tuxedo/dinner jacket/formal attire of your choosing. Thus, nobody is looking down on anyone for lack of means.

 

The fact of the matter is that Cunard sells a lifestyle product. When you board the ship, you’re both a customer and part of the product that other passengers bought — whether you like it or not. On that note, what you’re observing isn’t strictly classism; it’s customer service.

No, they are not. I don't know for sure, but I think, weather permitting, they are open as long as people want to use them.I should put something over your trunks for the long walk back.

What's the difference between this and the more practical solution of covering your body with a towel , which as far as I remember are large enough to cover both your upper body and trunks.

On Cunard, seem to note that Pool Towles are returned to the Pool Deck Steward Station, being placed in a "Bin".  Alternatively, left in situ, prior to returning to one's Stateroom clothed.

OMG you've been on a Marella cruise out of Palma Majorca ROFLMAO 

We used Marella as a jumping off point to experience cruising, the first one adult only was excellent and really gave us a taste for cruising so we opted on a second cruise out of Palma with them and if we had gone on this particular cruise first we would never have cruised again!!  

Be thankful Cunard do have standards and if you dont like them cruise with another line.

Agree it’s a question of “Standards”.  It appears some cruisers set themselves very low personal targets with regard to standards, which they then fail to achieve.

fyi....port aft deck 6 and you will hear the children rumbling past your door going to the daycare in the early morning qm2

Or one simply uses one of the extra large bath towels supplied in the room to cover yourself as you go and just dry with the pool towel and return with your own towel as a cover. That way you do not have to put any dry clothes over wet trunks.

You wear your towel and those who want to, will abide by the generally accepted “ cover up” protocol.

You won’t offend me and neither,  I would imagine, many others who, like me, don’t get upset or offended by what others wear.

 

If some can wear their dressing gowns to the pool, I suppose a cabin towel is in the same category.

 

Doesn't stop me thinking what a prat though!
