The question of host country inoculations and vaccination levels is a serious issue for cruise operators. Allowing 5,000 people to cascade down the gangway and into your population is a classic public health challenge.

Here is the challenge. If the US achieves the stated goal of 100 million shots in 100 days and maintains a level of 1 million shots a day, herd immunity (75%)  wont be reached in April 2022. We need more shots!

There are a number of hopeful signs on several vaccine fronts. Biontech has said it is prepared for a massive ramp up of its vaccine. I believe they said a billion doses for the year which begins in April.  Johnson & Johnson's single dose vaccine may be submitted for emergency use authorization as early as next week.   India has made vaccine development and distribution a major priority.

 

The dual issues of vaccinating a significant portion of the world's population, and achieving world herd immunity may be closer to resolution than the common wisdom currently anticipates.

Not entirely thrilled with intial reports on this, since, if I'm correct, predicted effectiveness is only like around 66%?  The idea of single shot is certainly appealing though.

True but its hospitalization and death rate is 0. People who get COVID only have mild symptoms. I”ll take it, actually any shot at this point! Waiting to be eligible.

But many in are area are still having difficulty getting on the waiting list for shots.  This, combined with Europe’s progress on vaccinations also being slow, and even more uncertainty about getting to and from Europe, have caused us to move all 3 of our planned European trips, including the June Viking cruise, to 2022. We are optimistic that conditions will improve, but have decided to wait and watch.

The really good news that gives me hope is the steep drop of COVID in Israel.  62% of the public has been vaccinated. COVID has seen a 50% drop. The shots work!

....and yet statistics have always shown flying to be safer. It's just that when there is an airline incident, your chances of survival aren't so good. That being said, our favorite mode of travel is still by car.

Even more optimistic on Cruising before the end of 2021.  We just  received our 2nd dose of the Moderna vaccine. In a month I will think about eating in some of our favorite restaurants. Know  they will welcome the business.

Booked on VO  Bali to Sydney for end of Nov 2021.

We are on the Jan 8, 2022 sailing to South America.  We are doubtful that the sailing will happen.  We already had a South  America sailing cancelled this year.

Ours follows yours.  I am also doubtful that ours will sail.  Chance is 50/50, even if US achieves enough percentage of vaccinations for herd immunity. Bigger questions are situation in South America and duration of our vaccine protection.

Wonder how early Viking cancelled your previous cruise and if Viking compensated enough for you to re-schedule the cruise?  When we booked ours, we had the July 4 sale (which is much better than the Explorers’ sale of free air).  Thus, it will most likely cost us more to rebook.

If Viking cancels your cruise again, will you rebook the same cruise?

This is a HUGE item...probably the most critical of all. My worry is that once people get the 2nd dose of a vaccine that, for (probably too) many people, they'll think it's "party time" and all is good again....
