Ever been mistaken as a crew member ?

just to take a break from the 395 COVID-related threads……..

I’ve been on cruises with many  friends over the years.

One of them is Chinese and another is Filipino.

Both  of them, on more than one occasion, have  been asked ( by other passengers) a question that obviously was intended for a crew member.

I always find it a bit entertaining…and also very infuriating .

Has anybody else ever had this happen ?

My husband who is Chinese American, has been asked whether he works on the ship. One passenger even responded "Are you sure?" when he said he wasn't.  How obnoxious is that?!

When we used to do our laundry at a laundromat, he was often asked whether he worked there. People have also asked him whether he was delivering food.

No, but on another line, there was a brief period when top tier loyalty status passengers were being gifted name tags just like the ones crew wear.  It was very short lived because one guy took it too far, wore it, and actually pretended to be a crew member.....of course, not in a good way.

Love it.  If it were me, I probably would have responded:  “ O  my God…you’re right.  I AM a crew member !  Thanks for clarifying this !  “

Yes.  Mistaken for a casino dealer.  Got a bit of verbal abuse from a guy who felt he needed to let me know how "crooked" the casino was.

Learned my lesson -- I will never wear black pants and white shirt, regardless of spectacular accessories, on a ship ever again.

Yes, it happened to me and I am a white, gray haired, female cruiser. I was wearing a white polo shirt and black skort and a passenger handed me her key card and ordered a drink out by the Seaview bar.  It took me by surprise, I could have been bad, but when I told her I am a passenger she was utterly embarrassed.

Thanks for bringing back a fun memory.

I think I know that line. We were on one of their ships and there was an elderly woman who wore her name tag and stood in the receiving line at the Captain's Welcome. Also had "her" table in the specialty dining room!

LoL.  No, but this thread gave me a much needed laugh.  However, on a similar note, I do get mistaken for a local in Europe a lot because I'm 100% Italian.  They stop and ask me for directions, of course they realize I'll be no help at all the minute they hear my accent.  I couldn't give directions in Paris or Rome if my life depended on it, the streets change names like at every intersection.

I've seen pictures on our very own Cruise Critic from days gone by where passengers are wearing these and I was completely confused, now I know.

Sounds like a Dolly on HAL.

Not her but a similar lady on a different line.

I don't mean this to sound callous, but did she pass?  I haven't heard her mentioned in a while, course nobody can go anywhere now.  When I googled her an obit came up, but could be for someone else.

It is my normal to conduct a ship tour around 2:00 PM for roll call members that are new to HAL.  During one of my tours and wearing my HAL logo polo shirt, I had several passengers, not from the roll call, join the tour while in progress.  At the end of the tour, one of the joiners told me she really liked my tour and asked if I worked at the Front Desk or Shore Excursions.  When I replied that I was just helping my CC roll call group get oriented to the ship, she asked how she could join CC and be a better prepared cruiser.

Not on a ship but I was in a mall in Brooklyn one winter day and not wearing a jacket because I lived close by and several people assumed that I worked in the store that I was in.

My son and daughter in law were mistaken on a HAL ship in Alaska as photographers.  Once they were asked if they were employed by National Geographic! (They had long lens cameras).  Another time my son offered to take a photo of a couple who were doing a selfie & they thought he wanted to charge them 🤦‍♀️…he was just being nice.

Oh, no. it would NOT have been a good response in the circumstance! The passenger was hoping to get it on with a crew member. 😮

I think this could be considered mistaken for a crew member with a different

twist. My DH and I were on a Princess cruise to Alaska about seventeen years ago It was a formal night, but there were not many gentlemen dressed in tuxes. My DH was wearing a suit. Some others in the dining room were dressed quite casually.

During dinner,we decided we would like to make another reservation for dinner at the specialty restaurant, Sterling Steakhouse. My DH said he would speak with the maitre ‘d about a reservation .

On our way out of the restaurant, my husband approached a gentleman dressed in a tux and asked if he could assist in making a dinner reservation. The man looked at my DH and in a dismissive tone said he was not ship staff,in fact,he was a passenger !

My husband quickly apologized and we left the restaurant.

I could only think that when the gentleman returned to his table, he most likely said to his wife or SO,that he knew he should not have worn the tux!

Being taken for staff ,apparently, did not sit well with him, given his reaction to my DH’s question.🙄
