RaiderDuck Posted December 16, 2021 #1 Share Posted December 16, 2021 My wife and I are currently onboard the Panorama. This morning, the ship's status went to Yellow, and the port of Cabo San Lucas denied the ship permission to debark. Carnival is refunding everyone's Cabo excursions and giving out a puny $50 OBC per cabin. Should my wife and I ask for more, given that 1/3 of our ports just got canceled, or are we hosed? 1
Rare 1kaper Posted December 16, 2021 #2 Share Posted December 16, 2021 I'd say you are SOL. There is no guarantee of ports. This is out of their control. I think you'll also get your port fees back but not 100%.
Rare BlerkOne Posted December 16, 2021 #3 Share Posted December 16, 2021 All you are entitled to is a refund of port taxes and fees which are less than the $50 offered.
Schoifmom Posted December 16, 2021 #4 Share Posted December 16, 2021 You are only entitled to receive your port fees and taxes refunded. Be happy that Carnival extended the courtesy of $50 OBC. While it doesn't seem like much, they are not required to provide anything per the cruise contract to which you agreed.

purrlinda Posted December 16, 2021 #6 Share Posted December 16, 2021 Do you know why the cruise was raised to yellow?

No. The only reason we know it's Yellow is from checking the CDC website. This morning, they first announced that everyone debarking would have to get a rapid test. An hour later, they canceled the port altogether. They're claiming they have no idea why we were refused debarkation.
ArchieCruise Posted December 16, 2021 #8 Share Posted December 16, 2021 From what I understand there were a half full of individuals test positive on the ship.
Rare sparks1093 Posted December 16, 2021 #9 Share Posted December 16, 2021 Our cruise had the itinerary changed from Bermuda to the Bahamas about two months prior to sailing. Each cabin received $150 OBC. I also understand that people were allowed to cancel or to change sailings without penalty.
beerman2 Posted December 16, 2021 #10 Share Posted December 16, 2021 You are getting more than Carnival is required to pay, Port fees, in addition you are receiving an extra $50 OBC. It’s amazing how pax expect more. Ports aren’t guaranteed any time let alone NOW. Anyone booking a cruise during this time is taking a chance. It’s a roll of the dice.

Read the fine print of your cruise contract. I would take the 50 bucks and go buy a nice bottle of wine
crzndeb Posted December 16, 2021 #15 Share Posted December 16, 2021 I am also on the Panorama, and am perfectly happy with the $50. Im still healthy and on a cruise ship, so I still consider my glass half full. It was stated there were a few positive cases, we have no idea number, or if passengers or crew. The Mexican authorities said we would have to test all individuals before going ashore, that’s not really feasible being a tender port and a shortened visit. I just went to the casino with my $25 free play (I don’t gamble, and had no clue what I was doing), but cashed out at $38, so happy with more free money. 😉 7
NOLALADY Posted December 16, 2021 #16 Share Posted December 16, 2021 Pre-Covid, I was on a sailing where HALF of our ports were cancelled (the main ones I booked for) and we didn't get any OBC.

I was just letting OP know that you don't always get any OBC.

RaiderDuck Posted December 16, 2021 Author #20 Share Posted December 16, 2021 C'est la vie. Guess $50 is all we're getting. At least we have a balcony to enjoy for the afternoon. Thank you to everyone for your replies and advice! 🙂
sgttami Posted December 16, 2021 #21 Share Posted December 16, 2021 Our Bermuda cruise was changed to Bahamas three years ago and we didn't know until a few hours after we boarded. No OBC, just a refund of the difference in port charges. No surprise. It's all in the cruise contract.
SeaHunt Posted December 16, 2021 #22 Share Posted December 16, 2021 To compare lines, today @cruisestitch posted on the Royal board about the Explorer of the Seas missing St Lucia. He said 7 crew tested positive and they were denied entry. He said their compensation was good: "Passengers will be compensated in the form of one day’s cruise fare added to our onboard account".

So, one day's cruise fare is entirely dependent upon how much you actually paid (which seems fair). If your 7 day cruise (fare only) was $500, you would get $72.43. Operationally, Carnival's method of providing a standard rate per person would be much more simple. But I've learned over the years, we have to roll with the flow. 😃
Rare BlerkOne Posted December 16, 2021 #25 Share Posted December 16, 2021 $50 compensation is very generous to those who only paid $25 for the cruise. 2
