Our family got Covid on the Odyssey and ended up in the Red Zone

Recommended Posts

I appreciated their policy - they were able to handle things discreetly.  We started with 1 positive case in our room and ended with 4 - we fell like dominoes.  The health care on board was surprisingly comprehensive- blood work, chest x ray, vitals.  We had check ins with both doctors and nurses.  We were given meds to treat symptoms.  They closed off the hallways as they escorted each of us down, we used the service elevator, there is an entire section of the ship deemed the red zone for isolation and medical care.  We ended up in 2 ocean view rooms a few doors down from one another.  Guest services designated one person to check in on us and manage the financials and such.  They did the best they could with the circumstances they were given.  My wife was down there the longest - 4 days - she was also the sickest and received the most care.  The biggest hiccup was how long room service took on several occasions (once in the red zone - when we were up in our regular room in quarantine it was efficient) at first we were like - room service!!!! By the end the whole family never wanted to order room service again 😉 They provided private transportation to the lot we parked in as well.  Feel free to ask any questions.

The first 3 days of the cruise were AWESOME - so glad we have that to hold on to.

So sorry your cruise ended that way.  Were you offered any compensation for the time in quarantine?  Did you drive to the port?  How long a drive?

thank you

yes - they are giving us FCC for the cruise fares.

We drove 10 hours and with traffic on the drive home it took us over 12 - longest drive of our lives

For the 1/2/22 Odyssey sailing, do you know if any passengers have gotten COVID on this current cruise? I know that some crew have gotten COVID. The ship is only about 40% capacity at present.

Sorry that you had to experience this.  Glad that you believe that it all worked out.

A question regarding "we were given meds?"

What "meds" were you given?

Thanks.

According to the CDC (with info provided by RCI), every ship around North America except Ovation has some cases on board.

So originally if you tested positive they unloaded you at the next port and took you home on a private flight. It would seem that has gotten too expensive though, and now they're locking people in staterooms for 4+ days.

That's terrifying.

The challenge has also been that not that many ports are accepting covid passengers these days.

What about the expenses for the medical care and meds?   Was that taken care of?  You mentioned that a person was assigned to you to take care of the financials...What does that mean?  Thank you for sharing your experience.  It helps us in determining if we want to go on our scheduled January 20th cruise on the Anthem.  Hope your family fully recovers.

Could you share your level of masking? Did you remove to eat in dining room? Sit unmasked with drinks in public areas? Paper surgical masks, N95s? I'm not asking these questions to place blame, rather to assess risk.

Do you think your wife just showed symptoms first and you all were exposed at the same time? It would seem a short incubation for your wife to get it first and then give it to you if you were sick the next day or in a matter of hours.

According to a friend of mine who is currently working on Freedom, almost every RCI cruise since last Summer has had someone test positive during the cruise. Most of the cruises involve only a few people testing positive, but there have been larger breakouts on multiple ships, which the media loves to jump all over how dangerous cruise ships are right now. Personally I feel safer on a cruise ship than I do going to a local store like Costco or Home Depot.

Do you know if you would have flown, if they would have allowed you to rent a car and drive or would they have made you do the remainder time in quarentine in a hotel?

they offered us a rental car as well as a meal allowance

no clue - we were week before sailing at about 50% capacity and wish we could have enjoyed the fewer passengers longer

👍

My wife was given antibiotics

We were given cough drops, cough syrup, night time cough syrup, and benadryl - meds varied upon symptoms

not ideal - my guess is had we gotten sicker they would have evacuated us.  Omicron is rampant

I'm sorry you and your family had to go through this.

I appreciate you sharing your experience. While no one would wish to go through any of that, sounds like they took good care of your family.

I would rather be confined in COVID row with an assured return to the US within a few days than kicked off the ship in who knows what country and having to deal with their protocols just to get back into the US.  That's beyond terrifying.

Of course - that is why I am sharing... knowledge is power

We were not charged anything

were refunded partial credits for beverage package, refunded for special dining and unused excursions and will get a FCC for the cruise fares

Every ship for the near future will have positive crew and passenger cases. Celebrity Apex was just denied access into Nassau this morning due to case count.
