Being Quarantined Because of Contact

There has been talk that NCL has an amazing facial recognition system....and can identify all those you've been in contact with....leading to more testing and more quarantining.

No matter how amazing their system is, it would not work when someone is wearing a mask.  The computer needs to see "the entire face".  Then, add in glasses and hats!

NCL is doing the best they can do, more so than any other place on land. D*nmed if they do, D*mned if they don't sort of situation.

According to the the Embark series (Ep 3) the software they were working with recognizes faces with masks.  This is potentially a bigger issue than identifying contacts on a cruise ship so you can be sure that people have been working very hard on solutions to this.

Ya see, what they're not telling you....when you get your preboarding covid test...they are actually microchipping you so that they can track your every movement 🤣

Just kidding.... I don't know how they are handling close contact situations....we decided to sit this one out....our next cruise is in March....we will re-assess the situation at the end of February.

Most likely they’ll consider as close contact at least:

- sitting at a restaurant close to someone with covid (how they determine close is anyones guess but they know exactly where everyone sits except for buffet etc).
- participating on an excursion with an infected person (sitting on the same bus is most likely enough)

So to avoid being classified as close contact you’d at least want to avoid any NCL arranged excursions and eat only at buffet 😁

I have done 3 cruises during covid with TUI cruises(cruise line for german-speaking market) and they did it the "traditional" way.

In every restaurant(even in the buffet), at the theater ,in every bar and in every excursion bus they had people that immediately after your arrival asked for your cabin number(or scanned your card) and noted it in their system(all of them had some electronic devices with connection to the ship system)

So they knew exactly when you have been at which location and even at which seat(bus, theater, etc.)

There was a report where some representative of the cruise line explained that in case some passenger is tested positive they know exactly within 15 minutes which other passengers they have to put in quarantine and get tested.

I guess that with their face recognition system NCL can do it in approx. the same time span.

Or, hot/breakfast delivered to the stateroom and order off the Room Service Menu, have it dropped off just outside the door (those recessed doorways are great, isn't it) 😜  The other problem is how to use the UBP perks, although we don't get that package, not a problem for us.  Specialty dining - ooops 😷

Avoid the gift shops, duty-free and casino.  Going to wear a baseball cap and zipped up hoodies all the way, everywhere onboard, except inside our room.  Ignoring the balcony neighbors won't help, oh no ...

If I win the haven upgrade, hope that I do, can the butler please have extra soft pillows in suite and one hazmat hoodie.

Didn’t you realize that every time you go to a restaurant on NCL ships (MDR, Specialty, otherwise) you need to present your cabin card? So they record your presence and table #?

This has been like all the time we’ve been on ships over all the years.

Everyone cruising on NCL needs to be vaccinated.  In the Covid vaccines, they implant nanochip, so NSA can track you.  NCL had bought a license at great expense from NSA to track people on their ships.

People who visit their mistresses need to be careful, you've been forewarned.😜

Are you kidding me???  I was told it was a 5g chip.  No wonder my service has not improved at home.  This is very upsetting.

On a serious tip, just card swipes (casino, bars, restaurants, etc) can do most of the tracking as they know where you are, how long, the table, etc.

honestly, at this point....if you are afraid of contracting covid....cruising is not for you....take a pass (like we did) ... I did not feel like the odds would be in our favor (I'm a pretty crappy gambler)... if you are young, healthy and courageous....don't worry about it....HOWEVER.... if you choose to cruise, make sure you have some sort of 'what if' plan in place... the stories of 'buh bye' at the end of the cruise are slightly horrifying.... far from what they promised...

Pffffttt... The stewards are trained to listen for guests who cough and sneeze after which they'll place a variety of vouchers in your bed for free artwork, spa treatments, and bingo cards. When you go redeem at a specific time and place, you'll be greeted with a 50000 volt cattle prod and shuttled into a room with others waiting to be tested during which you'll catch COVID from the one person who's actually positive, then summarily quarantined in a 4' square torture box until you tell them where the runaway handmaids are.

Ok I'm going to go out on a limb here and say they pretty much consider a close contact to you with people in your cabin or in your group. Or possibly, maybe, if you were on a ncl tour. Tables are 6 feet apart in the restaurants so i highly doubt that'll matter unless they want to ignore the only consistent thing the damn CDC has stuck to since the beginning of this crap. I highly doubt they are going to chase you down if you rode in an elevator for 21 seconds with someone who tested positive.

I agree with bluesea777's thinking. I'm guessing NCL will get a list of every location where your card was scanned including restaurants, bars, shops, etc, then review the security videos of those locations to see who you were in close contact to. Then gather everyone for testing. I also believe they will be overly aggressive during this process to appease the CDC and media. Even if they have advanced facial recognition, they don't have to rely exclusively on it.

Restaurants are no exception. I've been seated a few of times where I've been less than 6 feet away from another diner and at tables less than 6 feet apart. After reading the horror stories from some CC folks, I began requesting tables where i'm seated at least six feet away from other diners and eating at off peak times.

Here are some of the close contact quarantine locations that have been reported so far....

1) Teen Club: This one quarantined upwards of 10 families on Breakaway

2) Bingo: Wife went to bingo. Husband didn't.

3) Comedy Club: Couple was seated by a hostess next to someone who later turned positive.

It's not just dinner, tours, or people in your cabin. The trick appears to be to make sure you don't sit next to anyone, anywhere, for more than 15 minutes.

I will say it again it is hardly worth going if it is going to be like that. That is worse than George Orwells 1984.

I am of the belief now that covid is everywhere, no way to avoid, and just end the charades. If you are too sick to function properly, isolate and quarantine. If you have no symptoms, fully functional, and no effects, live life as normal. Covid is here for many more years. We just need to accept that fact.

It is already like that. Covid being aerosol transmitted and omicron being highly infectious causing also booster vaxxed people to get infected they must be very careful on ships.

Everyone going on a cruise these days must accept that they might end up being seen as a close contact to a covid + person. Of course they will use key card info to understand who has been in the same facility (restaurant, spa, casino, bar, teen club, whatever) than the covid + person. And then they investigate a bit more. And there you have it. You might be a ”close contact”.

If you cannot except this kind of situation you shouldn’t cruise just now. I made the tough decision to cancel my cruise, just like many others did, because I am not mentally ready to accept this kind of risk.

Were all of those incidents on the Bermuda itinerary? I know the first one was

I was on the Breakaway at the end of October and Gem last month in December, my experience with the facial recognition used at the gangway is that they require you to remove your mask and sometimes hat for the scanner to detect you. I also noticed the scanner seems to take time for it to do the scans, so expect to stand there for like 30 seconds or so. it is not as quick as scanning the key card to get on/off the ship

"Musical Chairs" might work...lol!

I don't "live in fear" of catching covid...in a decade we'll look back and laugh at those crazy people in their masks (I'm laughing about contactless delivery and the gloves I wore to open the pizza boxes already).

But I am trying to justify "spending money" with a good probability of getting less than what I paid for.

DH and I aren't eaters or drinkers.  If we were, we'd have no hesitation about cruising now.  But, we like mingling with people, the casino (me anyway), the gym, the ports, the production shows, the art auctions....and we certainly don't want to end up "being sent to our room" because the guy in front of me tested positive. (How about one of those astronaut masks....you can see out...but they can't see in?  Let's see how well facial recognition works then!)

I'm of the camp....if you feel good....you're good to go!

Come to think of it, they always make me take the glasses off.
