The Daily for Wednesday 01/19/2022

Good morning, thanks for the Daily!  I love popcorn and have a bag of it in the house almost all the time.  Strangely enough, the kind I like best comes in a big yellow bag from - of all places - Dollarama!  Like most people, since the pandemic began, our pantry is stocked top to bottom with tin cans.  I still have a good memory, DH not to much.  Speaking of good memories, 5 years ago today we were on a BHB that stopped at St. Maarten where we wandered through the surf, did some shopping, and of course kept up our tradition of a beer in every port.

Well true to form, we're back in the deep freeze again.  This morning our temperature is --32C with a wind chill of -40, so any thought of shoveling the driveway or sidewalk is off the table, at least for today.  I don't plan on going out except to get my nails done later this morning, then it's back home where we'll cocoon for the rest of the day.  I do hope those who have been whammed with the winter storm have been able to dig their way out safely.

Reality.thumb.jpg.7fe9574bc96d2ad10a8c23edc18dbb0c.jpg

I like today's menu suggestion, and may try it one day, but not today.  It seems I might have gone a little overboard with the "small" pot of stew yesterday, and used a slightly larger pot - okay, a big pot.  Well, there are leftovers, so instead of hanging around the stove today, I'll simply put some in a casserole and stick it in the microwave to heat for us for dinner tonight.  Stew and a side salad will be what's happening on our dinner table this evening.  And wine.

Prayers for everyone who needs them and even for those who don't think they do.  Extra prayers for Jacqui, Jose, his medical team, and for those struggling with health issues.  We'll clink the glasses together tonight to cheer on everyone on the happy list.  Be safe, wash your hands, get your boosters, wear your masks, stay well, and keep warm!

Smooth Sailing!  🙂🙂🙂

Gerry

Good morning, Friends. Thank you for the Daily, the Lists and the Recipes.

Just a quick check in...we lost power Sunday morning at 5:00 and it was turned back on Monday night at 8:30. During that time we got some news we are dealing with and working through. Things should be sorted out today. I used my phone sparingly during the storm and will hopefully have some time this afternoon to catch up on the Daily. Just remember that when life serves you lemon, make lemonade. 🙂

🙏 and 🎉 for those on our lists.

@mamaofami Just saw on the Today show, that this years crop of oranges will be the second lowest in 100 years, an orange blight, and the weather....so while there will be OJ, it will be more...expensive.  Well, just like everything else.

I have been lucky to get to Grand Cayman twice.  The first time I was there I took the submarine trip down to the reef.  I am claustrophobic, so this was an act of love for the 3 people I was cruising with.  Overall this was the best, I mean best, excursion I have ever done.  I just had to remember to breath.

The second time we went, we were all about traveling on the cheap-the water belongs to the people, so we walked up to one of the dive schools to the right of the port, to see if they would allow us to snorkel from their site.  We would be willing to pay a fee.  It was free, as long as one of us rented some flippers.  DH and the other woman we were enjoying the day with, said fine, they both rented flippers and off they went.  Not being the stronger swimmer (or at least acknowledging my strength,) I snorkeled closer in to shore.  There were so many fish, by their dock, that I was entertained for hours.  What a great day!  My goal on our next cruise is to make it to Rum Point, and enjoy the beach on the northern part of the island.  I should be there, Covid willing, in September.  I have read recently that Grand Cayman wants to stop allowing cruise ships in, because we are destroying their reef.  I get it.  But at the rate we are going with cruise ports not wanting ships in, my future cruise has two ports, I may never be able to cruise into again.  I would hate to think of a 10 day cruise, with just 3 ports.

Good morning friends!  Chilly and sunny so far but we have rain coming tomorrow afternoon and who knows what on Friday.  I hope nothing because I have a dental cleaning Friday afternoon.  Not to mention I want good weather for my SIL as he arrives and then heads out for Florida Friday morning.

We've been to Georgetown, Cayman Island several times.  That port's claim to fame is that it was our first port of the day back on March 1, 2021!

I like the quote today, the white pesto pasta is certainly unique, popcorn is a favorite snack in our house, tin cans were a great invention, and our shelves are full of them.  Good memory day warms my heart!  I enjoy thinking back on all the good memories in my life, and feeling blessed because of them.

Prayers for those on our Care list.  It seems we had some better reports yesterday so perhaps we can move some people over to the Celebration list soon.  Cheers to everyone on that list, and to those cruising, fair winds and following seas.

The great thing about retired life is you can sleep in. Then reality sets in and you realize you have to get up to take your meds! Alexi tells me it’s currently 42 with a high today of 66. Couple of days of warmer weather before the next cold front.

I miss popcorn, actually I miss everything I used to devour. Diet’s weight loss is on a two day hold!☹️

What a great quote and so true. I’m a traditionalist when it comes to pasta and pizza sauces and require a red based sauce.

It’s a I-phone and Pad new download today;  just to let those of you who own them know.

Continued concerns, thoughts and prayers for all in need and may all of you enjoy your Hump Day.

Thanks to all.

Good morning Rich and fellow Daily-ites. Thank you Rich and all who contribute.

A beautiful morning and sunrise. Due to be 77 today,  with a low of 29 tonight and high of 37 tomorrow.. Crazy Texas weather.

Yesterday I caught up with my chores. Laundry, financial stuff, and grocery shopping. I was thinking the grocery shelves would be bare but no problem at all. I put the last of the Christmas decorations away and even had time to make spaghetti sauce. Today is my yearly mammogram. Tonight we have a "pop-up happy hour" in our cul de sac.

Prayers going out to our Jacqui,  Roy, Jose, Tana, and all who are on Roy's list. Does it look like the celebration list is a teeny bit longer than the prayer list today?

Here is my report from March 1, 2021 when we began the port of the day.

Having been to Georgetown a handful of times, I can say I enjoy it.  One visit DH spent some peace and quiet time on the ship ( Dec. 2015 Regal Princess) while I took a tour of the island.  My escort that day was Flat Stanley, drawn by my youngest grandson for his school project.  We were in possession of him for about a month while we were sailing in the Caribbean.  We took photos of him everywhere we went, then I sent along a letter detailing all of Flat Stanley's travels along with photos.  I'm sure every classmate's Flat Stanley had quite a lot to tell at the end of the school year!

Here we are at the Cayman Turtle Farm.  enhance

I think this guy (or gal) wanted to get out and come along with me!enhance

That was my entire post on March 1, 2021 for Georgetown, Grand Cayman.

In Dec. 2004 we first went to Georgetown on the old Dawn Princess.  Here is a photo taken from the tender as we approached the town.  We walked around but didn't take many pictures.  I had no idea at the time I would be making photo books for all my cruises, so those early books had a very short supply of photos to choose from.00-krGnVk_TmW1vjXOSXmrbNCgtIzRKIF36hrdhGheqtVLtRqcK0s07SETHLnxBQQVy?cn=THISLIFE&res=medium&ts=1365184658

That is the trip we met our late friend John and his wife Jean.  We hit it off so well we decided to dine together all 10 days.  It was amusing to see him scan the menu, then pick the "always available" steak, baked potato and a hot fudge sundae every single night!  Might as well live it up when cruising, right?

In Feb. 2019 we boarded the Rotterdam for a three week Caribbean cruise.  We arrived in Georgetown after a 21 knot cruise from Curacao.  While walking around the town we checked inside the Elmslie Memorial United Church.00-krGnVk_TmW1vjXOSXmrbNCgtIzRKIF36hrdhGheqtVL-speIpLIqkRTsSD3VxHyg?cn=THISLIFE&res=medium&ts=1551118453

Then we saw the Peace Memorial Building with the historic clock tower outside it.00-krGnVk_TmW1vjXOSXmrbNCgtIzRKIF36hrdhGheqtVIFoSt_bL9-d-kZR6uxfGbx?cn=THISLIFE&res=medium&ts=1551120140

The only other ships in port are NCL.  My best guess is from my Crystal experience that Miami is pretty good about giving out Covid shots so perhaps some of the crew on NA are now eligible for second or booster shots,

Arriving now:

Roy as far as the booster shots... Rotterdam had shots for the crew onboard. The Tamarind staff and Lido bar staff all got them one day. Teased us that we may need to carry our own drinks!

Good Morning Everyone, thanks for the daily report.  I’ll pass on today’s meal suggestion since we had pasta last night and I’ll have leftovers for lunch.  We have been to today’s port once and visited the turtle farm.  Today the weather forecast has us getting into the 40’s F, I’m hoping that they are correct.

Yesterday I ordered our “free” tests.  While not good for cruising they may come in handy.

I hope that everyone has a good day today.

Good morning!

It’s wonderful to see some positive trends on Roy’s lists.  I’m so happy to see Tana escaping from the ICU. Her son sounds like a strong and thoughtful young man, and is so very fortunate to have supportive family to help him through all this stress.

I’m very hopeful about seeing some positive trends from others, @kazu@mamaofami, and others with concerns.

It is windy with dropping temperatures in NE Oklahoma.  We even have some snowflakes showing up on today’s forecast.

I had to check out Nieuw Amsterdam in Miami!  Looks like Carnival Horizon is docked just ahead of the NA, so probably covid/quaratine related.

Copper, if you are online, question for you:  Has the Nieuw Amsterdam ever been to Miami?

Maybe so.  Now that they've met Nieuw Amsterdam is leaving.

We have been to Georgetown, Grand Cayman three times but only got off the ship once. Our first visit took us to the stingray sandbar which was fun. The second time we decided to stay onboard and enjoy the calm of the relatively empty ship. The third time we were just planning to wander around town, but the weather was so iffy that we changed our minds. Tendering into that port can be a bit dicey depending on the weather!

Good morning from a cool (44F), sunny Quartzsite.  Our high is supposed to be 68F, but with sun and no wind, it will feel warmer.

Popcorn is a favorite here, for one with just a little salt, and the other one very salty.  We have more tin cans the normal with the shortages in the stores.  I like thinking about our good memories.

Gandhi's quote is good and a good one to try to follow.

The meal sounds good, but DH prefers the red sauce.  He probably would like the drink, and when he was introduced to a Bloody Caesar a few years ago, that drink replaced the Bloody Mary.  The wine sounds good.

We have been to Grand Cayman many times, but the most recent was in 2002.  All my pictures of that visit are of us, DBIL and DSIL snorkeling just past the tender dock.  The rest of our pictures are the pre-digital type.

Good morning everyone. It is quite the collection of days and a good quote.I await the recipe to see if the troops will enjoy it.We have not been to the port.

We are waiting  to hear how our Tana fared last night as she was finally moved to a step down unit. Hopefully she will start PT today as well. Thanks to all of you pulling for her she has defied the odds and I think is starting  to do better.

Terry

You've said all along that Tana is a fighter, and as she has beaten the odds and been moved to a step down unit, she's proven it again.  Hope she had a good night's rest and will start PT today.

Good morning everyone. A nice collection of days and quote. Another port I haven’t been too.

Yesterday was day 1 with the new female aide and it went well. At night, I kept thinking someone was here. The male aide doesn’t come till Friday somIm reserving judgement till then.
I have to make a trip to the post office after PT today.

Yesterday, I ordered food from Instacart and they had no orange juice or meat. Not sure if it was because of a shortage or too early in the morning after a 3 day holiday.

Stay safe everyone,

Carol

Carol, I'm glad the new day aide worked out the first day, and hopefully, that trend will continue.  Hope the night aide is good too.

Smooth, supple and concentrated, this lavishly fruity and jammy wine coats the palate with blackberry syrup, maple and boysenberry flavors. It's velvety and viscous, and might best be appreciated after dinner.  JIM GORDON

Ann, enjoying the winter series.  The "nope" reminds me of our dachshunds who did not like snow.  Nikki would not even put one paw in that cold white stuff.  She was definitely a desert dog.

Good morning dailyites! I love popcorn (with butter please). My pantry has some tin cans, mostly tomatoes and beans. I hope my memory is still pretty good. Like the quote by Gandhi, he was a very wise man. The meal I could pass. I love basil pesto. I will have the try the drink. I sure I will like it. I have had this wine!  Love a nice zin, but not the white zin-too sweet. I have been to this port! I don’t often get to say that! We called there on the Norwegian Pearl I think around 2012. With so many pet lovers here some might be interested in a podcast I listened to this morning while on the treadmill. It was a Radiolab from their archives called Animal Minds. It starts out with a very moving story about a humpback whale trapped in crab trap ropes off the coast of San Francisco and the brave divers that rescued her. Then it goes on to talk about if animals have emotions similar to humans. Thanks to all who post to keep this such a nice place to visit. Healing thoughts go to those on the cares list and cheers to those celebrating.
Just a quick note about my post yesterday about my ancestors. It was too late to edit. My 7 times great grandfather was born in Normandy France in 1640 and didn’t arrive in French Canada until he was a young man in his twenties. @superoma. You are so correct. Thanks to the Mormon church’s huge database I was able to access a wealth of information on Ancestry.
