Thank you.  I have loss insurance on my iPhone just in case, but I will probably keep it in the safe.  I will take my iPad to the pool or some other tablet.  They are not very expensive and would be easily replaced.

How about Find My iPhone? It should have all of your Apple devices, including your iPad, on it.

Not sure Find my iPhone would be helpful on a cruise ship?  You would want to know what cabin it is in?

Don't be naïve.

You are on a cruise ship with people that you don't know.

Either leave your valuables home or keep locked up in your cabin.

Through the years on Critic Critic I have read posts by people who are shocked! just shocked! that an item was stolen The posts were across the spectrum of cruise line forums.

Besides the sometimes pricey electronics and cash  (all were "safely" hidden when the owner stepped away), there have been people surprised to find the expensive brand new status symbol labeled item of clothes and footwear gone when they returned to the lounger on the private beaches or pool areas.

The expensive designer luggage pieces that are easily identified have also been reported as taken, usually from the luggage area on debarkation or from outside the cabin door.  Besides the resale value of the luggage, there is also a better chance of more expensive items being in the luggage.

OK let me get this straight.  I should leave anything expensive at home.  So I should bring my clothes in plastic trash bags so the bags don't get stolen.  And don't take anything to the pool.  How am I supposed to read anything without a Amazon tablet (which is 7 years old BTW)?  The iPad is 2 years old.  Can you show me some other way to read a newspaper or book that I somehow don't know about?  😁

Yes!  I personally don't leave anything unattended that I can't afford to or don't want to lose.  There will always be people everywhere even on a cruise ship that won't hesitate to take something that isn't theirs and security cameras and security staff are not going to be able to recover everything.

You people want me to take paper to the pool?  What do you get when you mix paper and water?

Depends upon the water.

I still have an old photo of myself somewhere reading a newspaper while floating on my back in the Dead Sea.

Just use the same precautions you would use at a public pool...  It's not hard.

My solution is I bring a 7 year old iPad with me to use. It has TouchID and a long pass code so it's no use to anyone else. If someone were to steal it I would be annoyed but it wouldn't ruin my day. I'm taking the same approach for my phone when I go to the beach, I have an old iPhone that mostly collects dust at home but is still fully functional so I can take pictures with it and listen to my podcasts. I don't leave it unattended out in the open but I put it in my backpack when I go swimming. If it gets stolen, once again it's an annoyance but it's not going to stop me from having a good time.

The newspaper is tough, but I still bring and read books. The paper ones. And yes, by the pool. I don't read underwater, though.

It should track it to the location.

Then you can use it to….

iPhone, iPad, iPod touch

  • View Location
  • Play a Sound
  • Mark as Lost (Lost Mode)
  • Remote Erase
  • Notify When Found
  • Notify When Left Behind

I once left an IPhone on an elliptical machine in the gym.  I returned and it was gone.  I gave security a time window, and via security video they tracked the passenger who took it all the way to his cabin, then flagged his seapass card.  When he tried to get off in the next port, lights went off and he was confronted, and told he'd not be allowed to go anywhere until he produced the phone.  I had it back soon after.  Hats off to ship security.

excellent outcome.  gotta love the cameras now after hearing this story

yup it is best to keep the good stuff at home.  Many women will wear fake rings on ship.

Being low key and not attracting any attention is the best way to be these days unfortunately.

I would never buy expensive luggage given how airlines and cruiselines handle them

We had a Nintendo DS and games stolen by the pool once. Celebrity wasn't going to assist us until we made a fuss here on Cruise Critic. Then miraculously, security was able to locate our items.

I would not leave items unattended anymore.

Considering Celebrity obviously has the abilities and resources to go after people to isolate/force test them if they shared an elevator together with a Cov+ passenger I don't sweat it anymore when it comes to valuables.

The surveillance level on modern ships is so high these days that it's pretty much impossible to commit a crime or get away with anything remotely suspicious without being detected. And the level of criminal activity on ships is very low to begin with. I had a chat about that with a senior officer on my recent sailing and he said most such incidents that involve a degree of theft are people who find someone else's casino slot voucher on the floor / in the machine, or drunk passengers who "forget" to pay merchandise at the onboard stores.

I was thinking today.  I have all these old electronics I can’t get rid of.  Maybe I leave them around the ship and wait for the thieves to solve my problem?  Whoops!  Did I really leave that on TOP of my towel?

Security will keep bringing the crap back to you whether you want it or not. It’s like a reverse scavenger hunt.
