Banning smoking in casinos anytime soon seems unlikely

Didn't you say this?

"Yes, but if I drink or eat fattening foods or lose $1,000, it doesn't impact your health at all."

It's called a response to a post.

No

That's sad.  I do.

Delta Airlines flight attendants were at the forefront of the movement to ban smoking on airplanes.  Why?

They saw their fellow flight attendants coming down with horrific  cases of lung cancer due to inhalation of second hand smoke.

Delta could have put profit ahead of the well being of their employees and passengers knowing that they would lose the business of some of their passengers who smoked.

The rest is history.  If a major corporation like delta could ban smoking so can RCCL.

By the way, smoking on airplanes was banned on February 25, 1990.  Here we are 32 years later and still smoking is allowed in RCCL's casinos.

Maybe because Celebrity charges so much more for their cruises, they don't need to supplement profits with casino revenue (same with DCL that has no casins).

Two points:

1.If you look at all costs, ( Tips, Internet, drinks, etc)  Celebrity  comes out close or sometimes even less than RCL  for similar itins.

2. It is my impression after several Celebrity cruises that they generally appeal to a different demographic than RCL, overall. Even in the designated smoking areas we saw few smokers. And the (non-smoking) casino was very active.

Saved me making the same points.

It'll take care of itself at some point.  The number of smokers keeps dropping.  Between education and age.

You're right about that -- it's largely a habit that belonged to an older generation.  When I was a kid (and I'm mid-50s), my parents and ALL their friends smoked.  It was a generational thing.

Today if you ask teens or young 20s whether they smoke, the answer won't deal with tobacco.  Again, generational thing.

In part, this depends upon whether you would buy the wifi package and drink package.

The majority of the ship is non-smoking. There are dedicated smoking areas. Are you telling me that a smoker won't gamble if they are forced to smoke in an outdoor designated area? They still cruised didn't they? I call total B.S. For the health of their employees and majority of passengers the casino should also be smoke free. Period.

Our local Indian casino has been smoke free since the pandemic started and guess what, that place is packed as if smoking never existed. People comply or make alternative accommodations.

Then what's your reasoning as to why cruise lines have not gone over to non smoking casinos?    You read Bayley's statement about it  .. if they felt people would just comply and deal with it, then why haven't they all done it?

No reason smokers should have to leave their gaming table or slot machine to go outside and smoke whent hey want to.   Bad enough its banned on balconies now and everywhere else, pretty much .. the non smokers can deal with it in the casino.

The two in CT are still non-smoking, at least as recently as a month or so ago. It was a pleasant surprise.

From Michael Bayley:

"Every, I would say every couple of years, we do test this and we take one or two or three ships and we ban smoking in the casino. And the result is less people go in the casino and that's the reality of it," he explained.

Just because more people go in the casino doesn't necessarily mean they are gambling - it's an approved indoor smoking lounge - you don't have to gamble to go there.

Agreed, but Celebrity had been marketing 'All included' pricing in recent months which , at first glance, be much higher than RCCL's basic cruise prices.

I did an in-depth evaluation for Transatlantic cruises next Spring and found that, like for like, RCCL, Celebrity, Princess Nd NCL all came quite close on the daily rate, for a mid range balcony room .

Did you read the article?  It also stated this:

Banning smoking, which the company has tested, produces lower revenue in the casino.

They gamble [a lot] less. Guess what???? Your cheapy cruise fare exists because other departments on the ship [casino, shops, restaurants] generates revenue. If you are willing to pay [a lot] more for your cruise, then maybe they can do something about smoking.

It's a totally different issue for passengers and the world is full of potential employees to replace any who are worried about long term health issues.

The casino is a lucrative opportunity for these people.

On cruises out of Australia there is no smoking inside anywhere and usually two outside areas to smoke, one on deck 4 or 5 and the other on one half of the pool deck. That's it. The casino is still busy. I guess we are used to it down here because there has been no smoking inside any building or club or pub, apart from your own home, for probably 30 years. Clubs/pubs usually have an area that is well ventilated for smokers to be and nobody seems to have an issue with it.

I meant casino crew. If patrons dissapear, and Bailey said they did, their paychecks decrease

Bayley said less people went to the casino, but what about the difference in monetary intake?

I see lots and lots of smokers just standing around smoking - not spending money.

See post #61.

Now, when I choose to go to the casino on RCCL, I wear a mask in the casino because of smoking not Covid.  It does not stop my clothes from smelling like a cigarette but reduces my inhaling the smoke.  I also continue to give the casino low ratings on the post cruise survey and when asked why, my only response is smoking.  Doesn’t change anything but I feel better.  Cruised on the Carnival Mardi Gras recently.  They designed the casino with an even split between smoking and non smoking.  One is on the port side, the other on starboard.  In between are mostly walls and glass doors.  Interestingly, the casino host and bar are on the non smoking side.  I never set foot on the smoking side.
