Covid positive after cruise

Five cruises since restart (Nov/Dec b2b, Apr b2b and July) and DH and I haven't caught it.  We also don't mask unless required and have been out and about except for when almost everything was temporarily closed in 2020.  There are a lot of us who have cruised in the last year without catching it.  I personally know several.

I had COVID just before the cutoff for my July/August B2B, so I was good… but sooooo many people on both Facebook groups reported testing positive when they got home (or within hours of getting off the ship) including multiple people in our extended family (who joined me week 2). This was with pre cruise testing.

Never fails, I get a cold after every single trip that requires flying, no matter if it's a cruise, all inclusive, or a quick jaunt with buddies.

Me too ,  lol   ,  Im going to wear a mask first time in an airport and airplane to see if it makes a difference .

I’ve been curious If the people testing positive had inside or OV cabins? Did they eat in the dining room every day?

I have had friends do recent cruises and didn’t get Covid. I’m going solo and I went ahead and got a veranda so I can air out my cabin regularly and spend time on my balcony away from everyone else. Plus, yes, I will mask in certain situations.

It makes sense to me that people with inside cabins and OV spend more time around people.

I had my 2nd booster in early April, and went to NYC in April and then to Ireland in June because my adult kid caught Covid over there.  I was there 10 days and didn’t get Covid. I went to Seattle last week with my son and now I’m going back on Friday for the cruise. I HOPE I’m still covered by the booster, but I know if I am, the protection is likely lessened now.

For my mum and nephew who caught covid both had seperate balcony cabins, had food in MDR and buffet and the outside snack areas. They only went to one show and spent evenings around ship, shops and the odd bar.

We had an inside room for the three of us and only had food once in the MDR rest of time in windjammer. We Never caught covid.

We disembarked from EX on 8/28 after a B2B. I had a single symptom, seemingly unrelated to Covid, the last day of the cruise (not a typical symptom, but apparently one more common in those vaccinated and boosted per a recent British study)

  What was your symptom?

Definitely not saying that you should (or shouldn't), but I'm just curious about those testing positive - is anyone wearing masks or is it pretty much no precautionary protocols?  Again, not saying anyone is right or wrong.  We plan on masking next month and most likely staying out of crowded shows.  Wondering if this might keep us pretty safe (definitely not without risk) or if people are getting covid even with masking.  Thanks!

As others have said, COVID is endemic like the flu.  I am older so I get the flu shot every year and will probably get a COVID booster every year.  As they say, these do not necessarily prevent you from getting sick however they significantly lower the probability of severe illness and death.

I also wear an N95 mask in crowded situations. I will definitely wear it in airports.  On ships I will take the stairs when possible.

I think an N95 mask DOES help, some.  Any other type of mask is probably useless.

Given how cruises operate these days there is almost a 100% probability of coming in contact with someone who has COVID.  Everyone needs to look at their own risk profile (age, health issues, family history with COVID [if someone in my family died of COVID I would NOT cruise]) and make a decision as to what risk to accept.

We got off Vision a few days ago.  The morning after we flew home my husband had a sore throat and my sinuses still hurt (started while on the plane and figured it was the pressure).  We both tested positive.  I did have a headache one day on the cruise but figured it was too much sun (I get headaches all the time).  For both we just feel like we have a mild cold and are pretty tired, but that’s also partially jet lag.

Really we acted like covid was not a thing on our trip and so did everyone else

around us.  We are all vaxxed including boosters.  We only wore masks on the airplane and on buses in Italy because it’s required.  We ate in the dining room and buffet.  We went to shows.  Used elevators.  Sat in crowded tenders and visited crowded tourist spots where almost nobody wore a mask.

We have zero regrets.  We’ve been so careful for the last 2 years.  We had an amazing trip and it felt so good to not even think or care about covid.  The symptoms we have now were so worth it.   I’ve had worse allergy seasons.

We have cruised fourteen times since the restart.  We drive to the ports, wear masks only when required, use crowded elevators, and go to shows.  We are very, very careful about washing our hands and using hand sanitizer.  Gary had Covid two days after returning from cruise number twelve.  We were together constantly on the cruise (seven nights on Caribbean Princess) and did not attempt to isolate from each other once he was diagnosed.  I did not get it and still haven’t, two cruises later.  There is just no rhyme or reason to Covid.

To the OP - we embarked on the Explorer the day you disembarked.  We saw a lot of people misbehaving (Security was kept quite busy), but never noticed anyone coughing/sneezing.

Wife & I got covid lite (cold symptoms) at the end of a 12nt European Cruise this may. Testing prior to boarding was still in effect & people still masking. I feel Cruising has a higher risk in getting Covid, but not much more than similar behavior at home, eating out every night & attending a movie or show, lining up inside buildings. With the end of testing on flights & Cruises odds are not in your favour, but we are willing to accept that & have an Alaska cruise booked for late September 😊

In May we were on the Mariner the first week that masks became optional so of course 99% of us didn’t wear one.  Two days after getting home I tested positive for Covid.  Since we don’t fly we assume it was from the ship.

In July we boarded the Harmony and I wore my N95 mask while standing in the line for checkin, in the terminal, on elevators and anywhere I wasn’t going to be able to distance from others……. I did not get covid.

Maybe a coincidence or just lucky I am not sure, but we board the Harmony next Sunday and I will be bringing my N95’s again for sure!!!!😎😎

For some vaccinated people the only symptom with the newer variants is a headache, diarrhea, or dulled (not absent) taste (symptoms even those who have it don’t recognize as important until days in). But it certainly has, as you say, little rhyme or reason (which has made it feel a bit like Russian roulette).

Our case was a bit rougher (high fevers for 3-4 days), but I wholeheartedly concur. We were able to take my oldest sister and aunt on the AK cruise they had waited two years for, and thankfully neither of them got sick. I would do it all over again. Seeing them experience AK was worth our discomfort. 🙂

I tested positive 3 days after coming off my MSC Seashore B2B that ended August 6th i believe it was., I had a cough nothing more. August 20th RC Explorer of the Seas cruise was a no-go due to a positive test, but was promptly refunded after a phone call. Re-Tested Sept 1st and positive still..aggravating to say the least.

Upcoming November 4th Divina cruise, I will get a negative result!!!

You neglected to mention the number one risk factor which is age.

Correct. Advanced age and then co-morbidities and then just how your individual immune system reacts to these viruses, etc. Everyone has to assess their own, individual risk, etc.

I was wondering if people on other ships recently had a similar experience.

of course, we did. All you have to do is glance over the last several pages of this subforum. We got covid on our June cruise.

Oh, and the general sentiment is "suck it up, it's just a cold, and we all just want to go back to normal, like covid never happened."

Yes, age is probably a very significant risk factor.  It is even a significant risk factor for the flu.

It makes a difference IMO.  I have read most of this thread, and what's missing is no one seems to be saying they tested positive after wearing a mask in the airport, on the plane, inside the cruise ship, inside buildings in port, and rinse/repeat going home.

This is what I have done since mid-January to mid-May I have flown 18 times one way, with all trips having stopovers, so that's at least 3 airports in 9 roundtrips.  I was on 3 cruise ships for a total of 58 days, and two trips were to see family with small unvaccinated children the first trip.

I've taken 21 COVID tests between my personal ones and those provided by the ships on consecutive cruises.

Countless ports and inside venues.  Exposure to literally thousands of people.

So, that's an complete inventory of my exposure, which was very high.

All COVID tests were negative (double vaxxed and double boosted).

The difference from the people getting COVID?  I consistently wore a mask. Outside, no.  With known other passengers who were vaccinated, no.  Mostly vaccinated family members, no.

To me it's just a basic policy:  if I'm inside somewhere with strangers who I don't KNOW they've been vaccinated (having a lower possibility of contracting the virus; NOT immune), then I wear a mask.  When I fly I never take it off except to eat or drink. I put it on when I walk in the airport, and take it off when I walk into my hotel room or get in my family's car.

My point is if one is not consistent, then one is exposed.  I finally found that I could fly and NOT come down with a respiratory infection:  something that happened almost 100% of the time before I wore masks.

Just an explanation; just my opinion; everyone should make their own decisions.  I just don't like being sick.  Period.

Good for you for taking personal responsibility for your health, that's pretty much the essence of what most are trying to say. You are more than welcome to wear a mask wherever you want just don't expect others to wear one if they don't want to.

My husband used to get sick every time we flew somewhere.  He eventually learned to turn off the fan above him or at least not let it blow in his face.  We've been told that it's impossible to get sick from that, but... No colds since!

We got off Oasis on July 15.  We had taken a car trip to NJ, RI, then back to NJ, beginning July 3, eating out and rarely wearing a mask.  We tested negative on July 6 and didn't get off the ship until Coco Cay (Tuesday, I believe).  I started masking again in elevators, but evidently not enough.  I had a sore throat on the 15th (Friday) but tested negative.  My nose started to run on the 16th and tested positive.  Started Paxlovid on the 18th.  I probably would have felt better sooner, but for all the meds (antibiotics, antiviral, cough suppressant) by PCP had me on.  There were 8 in our party.  Just my husband and I were sick, no one else tested positive.  I blame it on the Casino!! We're vaccinated and boosted (once).  Still wearing masks in stores, but we try to limit going into them.  Will get the new booster when the time is right (I understand I have to wait a few months after having the virus).

Oasis was our fourth cruise since November.  Guess our luck ran out!

Why do we always have to hear about getting covid after a cruise.  Have people gotten covid after going to the grocery store, how about work.  You will get covid, if you are going to get it, where ever you are or where ever you have visited.  Cruise ships are no different.  First we complain about having to wear masks, then testing before a cruise, then not everyone wearing a mask although it is not required.  Covid is here to stay as is the cold or flu.  Can we just move on.  So tired of all this.  If you don't want to take a chance then stay home.  And no, I don't need a lot of judgemental people telling me what they think I need to do.  We will be on Quantum Sept. 19 and if we feel sick when we get home I can say we will not test.  Yea, I am one of those.
