Not only Europe, Middle East, and Africa, we did an escorted land trip in Peru, and each hotel held onto our passports.

I think the difference there was escorted land trip maybe?

I have only been to Paraguay in SA. Went to many places there and no one held onto my passport. But that is my only SA country...

Could be, I don't know for sure. And also those are different countries, they could have different rules.

I know it is not uncommon, I have read about this passport thing here on CC in numerous threads. I understand the logistics of why it is done. I still don't like it, as the security implications are quite alarming. I am pretty sure that when I got my passport, there was something in the documentation from the State Department saying never to give your passport to anyone else.

We were on the Regal Princess on the cruise prior to this one (great cruise, BTW).  We had to surrender our passports the day we were in Portland/Weymouth.  They were collected by our room steward and we were given a receipt. They were returned a day or two after we left Ireland (I think it was the Glasgow day) and we had them the rest of the trip. It was really no big deal. As a plus, there is a nice, big Irish stamp now in my Passport book...

I’ve taken multi country cruises. Multi country escorted land trips, and traveled on our own.

the cruises are unique before they have to clear the vessel and immigration when entering a new county. So, if you are in the EU snd have a stop in Turkey; they will collect passports for immigration purposes. That was you would have to go through a full blown immigration process where ever passport is checked.

Whether traveling on an escorted tour or DIY, you will be entering the country as an individual and will need to retain your passport.

Lots of hotels in Europe and Middle East and Africa will make you give them your passport when you check in and you get it back upon check out.

Can't comment about the Middle East and Africa, in Europe the vast majority of hotels do not do this. Many will require a copy of your passport but in our experience none have ever held it for the duration of our stay.

When we did an escorted tour of Peru, we and everyone else on the tour were required to turn in our passports at every hotel.

Yes, this makes 100% sense and is not in dispute. I think the confusion was a) how does this work on ships...is it for the *entire* cruise or only part of it, and...b) in Europe (and elsewhere) is it *common* to keep your passport for the *entire* stay. Hotels will need your passport to record the info but then they will return them to you and *not* keep them.

Just did a 30 day South American cruise. Turned them in at the beginning and got them back towards the end.  Somewhere along the line they picked up cool stamps from the Falkland Islands, Ecuador, Peru, Uruguay...Magic!

Turn them in so the hotel can get the information or turn them in and the hotel holds onto them? I did an escorted tour in Peru in 2021 and all the hotels took down the information from our passports, but no one attempted to hold them.

Ours was in 2019, and all the hotels held them.

For those of you that previously did NOT have to turn in your passports on a British Isles cruise, the rules changed on January 31, 2020.  The United Kingdom left the European Union (EU) on that date and since then no longer participates in the "freedom of movement" afforded to them by being in the European Union.  Therefore, in order to go between the UK (England, Northern Ireland, Scotland and Wales) and The Republic of Ireland (still an EU member), you need to show your passport (with a few exceptions).

There is no passport checks on the border between Ireland and Northern Ireland.  And technically, citizens of the UK and Ireland can still travel between countries without passport control due to a previous agreement, the reality is that there are still identification processes between the 2 countries and many use their passport for this identification.  I hope I have this right about the exceptions.

But the bigger picture is that for cruises going from the UK to Ireland, it is now very likely that your passport will be gathered by the cruise line for at least a day or two prior to stops in Ireland.  It seems to vary by cruise line when they return them.  I've had it done several times on various cruises and it has always been a smooth process to get them back.  Have a paper copy of passport with you in case you need it on shore.

Would a picture of your passport on your phone work?  TIA!

Neither a paper copy of your passport or a picture on your phone will get you far.  Technically, you can’t fly using that if say, you miss the ship.  And police would expect a real passport if they truly wanted one from you.  In my opinion, the paper (or phone) copy only serves the purpose of providing you the info in case it helps get a replacement passport faster.  For what it’s worth, I always have a picture of my passport available via any device because I store it in a secure folder in “the cloud”.  But I’ve never had to use that or a copy.  I’ve always had my original when needed.

When passports are collected, you are given receipts.

Sooner or later during the voyage you will be notified to pick your PPs back up.

I suppose the alternative is to wake you up night after night at 1 or 4 am when documents are being viewed by foreign customs officers who have boarded the ship and are looking at as many as 4,000 passports.

Choose sleep.

I only had it done 1 time in August of 2002.  I sailed on P&O's Victoria to Spain and Portugal for a week.  Was the only American onboard so that is probably why.  Didn't get it stamped or anything which I thought was odd. Gave it back to me on the second to last night of the cruise.

Not discounting your experience. I've traveled throughout Europe, South America, Asia and Australia. I've never once had a hotel hold my passport. It seems very odd to me that you had that experience.
