Vaping Causing Vapours?

Recommended Posts

Over on Celebrity forum there is a raging discussion about Celebrity trialing vaping in casinos. Previously there was no smoking permitted in any X casinos. However many posters on the forum are threatening to "jump ship" if vaping is allowed. I'm not sure where they would jump to as smoking, and presumably vaping, are permitted in many other lines' casinos.

There has been much news in local media about laboratory research finding a variety of dangerous substances in vapes, none of which seem to be mentioned in the X forum posts, including polonium-210 and other cancer causing substances. If that's the case why would Celebrity go down this path? A retrograde step IMHO.

I was of the opinion that smoking or vaping is not permitted in all ships in Oz waters. Is this correct? Government rule?

Personally, I would prefer (for health and workplace safety reasons) neither vice(?) be allowed but I don't make the rules.

It is not permitted inside the ships but is allowed in specified outdoor smoking areas.

The non-smoking rules are not quite laws, but are some sort of by-law that can be enforced by state authorities. Australian law only covers for federal buildings, public transport, airports & flights.

At the time, cruise ships voluntarily chose to abide by local customs of the state they were homeporting from. If the state laws applied to cruise ships, smoking would have been banned in cruise ship casinos in 2007, but that started a few years later. Initially, it was just the $AU ships of P&O/Princess, then the seasonal visitors followed suit a couple of years later. At the time Carnival Australia explained the banning of smoking in their casinos as following the expectations of the Australian community.

At this stage, I don't know if vaping is covered by the same laws. All ships I have been on recently consider vaping as a smoking activity and apply the same rules to it, but Aussie law is so far behind I doubt that cruise ships have been considered. I would wonder that if Celebrity is saying vaping is OK in casinos, it should also be OK in all public spaces. I guess that it is just about maximising the flow of cash through their casinos. It will be interesting to see if they allow vaping on Aussie based cruises, as I don't there is a law that prevents it, at least in international waters.

The only smoking or vaping are should be in a lifeboat, dragged 300 m behind the ship. The occupants can then bet or gamble how long it would be until they are hauled back in.

The odd thing with the Celebrity trial is that vaping is restricted to the port side of the casino. Weird.

It was the same when they were trying to satisfy the smoker/non-smoker debate. Most of the US cruise casinos went from smoking venues to smoking on one side of the casino or having random non-smoking nights.

As an ex-smoker, it all seems like a charade to me. Lots of the ships have a dedicated cigar bar/lounge which have their own negative pressure air conditioning and filtration systems. Unless you are standing outside the door when it opened, you wouldn't know it was a smoking area. They are closed when the ships come to Australia, taking away the one decent compromise. Armagnac (from year of birth), cigars & great conversation on QM2 was one of those cruising highlights I will never forget.

This is what is in the Princess Passage Contract:

25. Smoking

Smoking is not permitted indoors on any of Our ships. This includes in staterooms and on private balconies. For those who smoke, there are designated outdoor areas where smoking is permitted and this information will be communicated to You onboard. The use of electronic cigarettes is allowed within the confines of the guest's stateroom (balcony not included) and within designated smoking areas only.

From the Princess Website FAQs

Smoking Policy

Keeping the comfort of our guests a priority, and in consideration of consumer studies which show smokers are a small minority of guests, Princess has implemented the following smoking policy:

Designated Smoking Areas
Clearly marked “Designated Smoking Areas” are available on board and include a sufficient number of ashtrays that are emptied regularly. Generally, these areas include cigar lounges, a section of the nightclub, as well as a portion of the open decks. The Casino and Casino Bar are non-smoking areas on board, with the exception of designated slot machines where guests are permitted to smoke only while playing at those machines. All table games are non-smoking. The Casino will also have one or more non-smoking nights (6 pm to closing), depending on length of voyage. Show lounges, dining rooms and all food services areas on board all Princess ships are non-smoking. As a safety precaution, guests are reminded to properly dispose of cigarettes, cigars and pipe tobacco, which are never to be thrown overboard as this may be sucked back into the ship and cause fires.

Stateroom Smoking Policy
Princess Cruises prohibits smoking or vaping of all types, including e-cigarettes, in guest staterooms and balconies. This reflects the preferences of a vast majority of our guests who value having their primary living space (both stateroom and balcony) smoke-free. As balconies are a hallmark of Princess Cruises, we believe it is important to keep this peaceful space clear of smoke. Violations to this policy will result in a $250 fine for each occurrence, which will be charged to the guest’s stateroom account. Keeping with the global trend toward more restrictive smoking policies and honoring the wishes of our guests, we feel this enhances our onboard experience.

Bear in mind that the FAQs typically relate to US cruises. There can be variations in our region. Also the FAQs aren't always up-to-date The clip from the Passage Contract I posted above is dated June 2023.

Forgive me my sin - I am a vaper and I vape in my stateroom. That piece in the passage contract has been there from at least as far back as the beginning of 2016 when I went on my first Princess cruise, which happened to call in to Singapore. Little did I know that Singapore had out-lawed vaping of any kind from 1 January 2016. My vape was discovered in my handbag by xray at the port and I had to return it to the ship, just about missed my excursion.

Actually OZKIWIJJ is right, this is directly from the the Passage contract pertaining to my upcoming cruise…..the first is just a pic from the first page of the contract, but the second is a screen shot of section 5, governing tobacco and cigar use etc… if you take a look about half way through it does state, and I quote … “The use of electronic cigarettes, personal vaporizers, or electronic nicotine delivery systems is allowed within the confines of the Guest’s stateroom (balcony not included) and within designated smoking areas only”

I have been vaping since I gave up a heavy smoking habit almost 12 years ago and have vaped in staterooms  on all my cruises! Nobody can tell if you have been vaping or not and it leaves no lingering smell or damage! I have even had Stewards come in the stateroom after I had just taken a puff by accident.

Big clouds of vape come from what is called "Sub Ohm" vaping, ex smokers who have never returned to smoking ever don't usually Sub Ohm or do smelly flavours.

I do though disagree with all the nicotine filled disposable vapes being sold under the counter the past year and almost in plain sight as I know many young people at work who never smoked but now vape and have become addicted.

Like smoking if you are respectful of others then the harm is your own.

Vapes do not set off fire alarms and I even know past Qantas flight staff who vaped in the restrooms.

"Stealth vaping" is just that! a quick puff in a toilet cubical or empty area that harms nobody else!

With extractor fans I cant see a problem with having one side of the casino vaping only other than from those who demand to enter every area of the casino even though they do not gamble! Same as when smoking was allowed one side of the casino.

When travelling, I have long carried a Nicorette nicotine inhaler. It saves the need of a quick puff in the dunny.

Not as impressive as your numbers Den, but I am up to around 5 months off the cigs, but I am giving the vapes a miss.,
