Rare NutsAboutGolf Posted August 31, 2023 #1 Share Posted August 31, 2023 I'm actually shocked its still around, maybe RCG wants to keep turndown as a distinction between the two cruise lines? 1
Silkroad Posted August 31, 2023 #2 Share Posted August 31, 2023 I’ll confess that I’ve wondered if turndown service will be reduced or cut altogether. It’s a pleasant tradition, but it must be quite time consuming. A little side note for those who aren’t receiving pillow chocolates. I’ve been puzzled by sporadic pillow chocolate delivery until last week. The day after DH and I returned from our Norway/Iceland b2b, this mysteriously appeared on our bar😂 1

Rare NMTraveller Posted August 31, 2023 #4 Share Posted August 31, 2023 Pillow chocolates and turn down is what separate from mass market. It is about the only sign of "luxury" left.

twincheryl Posted August 31, 2023 #6 Share Posted August 31, 2023 Just returned from Silhouette Norwegian Fjords... had Sunset Veranda on deck 8... asked Stateroom Attendant to please skip evening cabin service as I don't need someone turning down my bed covers and closing the drapes... but still he couldn't resist and also got a chocolate each evening, which I left on the bedside table for the whole cruise... lol... go figure.

If you opt in to Go Green the Cabin Attendant asks if you want the primary cabin service in the morning or evening.

Our experience of 'Go Green', on both Silhouette and Eclipse, was that we couldn't stop the Cabin Attendant from still doing everything as normal. I suspect they worry that they may miss out of tips if the service level is reduced.

Go Green is still 2 services a day put one is just a touch up ( no vacuuming, dusting, cleaning balcony, full bath cleaning) replace towels, remove used glasses/dishes straighten and turn down bed. Yes, I know what it is supposed to be, but it made zero difference, we reminded our cabin attendant that we has selected 'Go Green' and they said they wanted to make sure everything was perfect anyway so still got vacuumed etc. regardless...

I’ve opted for Go Green for several cruises without having had the attendant ask me when I wanted my primary cabin service.
barbette165 Posted August 31, 2023 #14 Share Posted August 31, 2023 Back to the original question, it may have survived because there's no cost saving in removing it. The number of stateroom staff needed is probably determined by the workload in the morning and how many rooms each attendant can achieve during the morning shift. Unhindered by any working time regulations, the attendants are then available in the evening to perform the turndown service for zero or maybe minimal incremental cost.

Was told routinely turning down housekeeping can be a sign of the passenger(s) removing the auto gratuities so that could be the reason they left chocolate (lol). Additionally, X with turndown make the bed a little different at night and the pillow placements on different on Chic nights. I personally enjoy turndown as its rare any hotels do this, yet all I really care about is exchanging towels, taking out any trash and remaking the bed in the off chance there was a mid day snooze

lexmiller Posted August 31, 2023 #18 Share Posted August 31, 2023 We LOVE the twice daily cabin servicing. On land, only the most lux of the lux hotels do twice daily. So on Celebrity, it is a wonderful treat for us. We always shower in the evening around 5pm before heading out for the evening's festivities, and don't get back to our cabin until much later, after dinner, the show, the 8pm game show, dancing, casino, etc. So to come back to our cabin and have everything set to rights, our towels changed, our bed inviting us to climb in with the pillows arranged a different way nearly every evening, the daily planner waiting for us to read to plan the next day's events - we just love it! It's an absolute slice of heaven, everything that we do not get at home! If the twice daily cabin service is ever eliminated, this will be the death knell, the canary in the coal mine, the final indication that any pretense of being a Premium Line (another topic currently on the boards) is over.
lexmiller Posted August 31, 2023 #19 Share Posted August 31, 2023 And for those above who have said that the beds are made in the morning? Sure, but I do hope that many amongst us are enjoying our afternoon "NAPS"??, wink wink? Especially on sea days or short port days, right? Isn't that why those "do not disturb" magnetic signs are in our rooms now, too many embarrassing incidents from the old paper ones that hooked on the door and blew away! 😂 So as I said above, how lovely to come back to the cabin after a fun evening out and about on the ship, to a refreshed "like new" room. We aren't nappers so no concern there. If I was I can't imagine climbing in bed in the afternoon like I do in the evening. And if I did I'd make the bed once I got back up. Not getting back in bed for the evening in an unmade bed.
