Typical clothing for cruise on Celebrity

 Share

Recommended Posts

We haven't cruised on Celebrity for about 10 years and I have heard that many cruise lines are more casual than they used to be -- just not sure about Celebrity. Could someone who has cruised more recently give a perspective on what is typical of dress during the days and evenings (we are considering a Carribean cruise in case that matters in this conversation)? Are there still formal nights, and if so, do most people still go all out on dressing up? A decade later, our everyday lives and wardrobe are much more casual (jeans in the winter & shorts/crop pants in the summer) thus I am not sure if I need to go shopping to have dressier clothes for our cruise. Also, what cruise lines should we consider that would be equivalent to Celebrity in experience if we want to consider other lines (looking for great service & food, but casual)?  Thanks for any insight and experience from more recently experienced cruisers!

Celebrity is casual, what you describe is fine for dinner, sans the shorts, though would be fine for lunch.  Some do dress to the 9’s in the evening, totally optional though.

As you describe is great. Lots of casual sun dresses for women.  I usually wear decent jeans on the ship as I am often chilly with the a/c… a lightweight hoodie and sneakers. We rarely eat in the MDR so not worried about dressy clothes, but you’ll see everything from nice casual to formal wear.

We cruise Celebrity the most, but are branching out to Holland America and find it to be similar, as well as even Royal Caribbean, Princess, and NCL.  Everyone seems to have their preferences in one area or another but we are just happy to be on a ship and cruise in regular verandas, not suites.

Not sure much has changed in ten years, which is about the first time we did a Celebrity cruise.  Smart casual fits the bill.

There are no stuffy black tie or formal nights.  Evening chic is an opportunity to be smarter but no obligation.

So during the day we are either swimsuit and T-shirt or some sort of casual, not a belted short, during the day and night during warm weather cruises. For dinners, it is khaki or black dressier pants, not jeans, with either a polo or button down shirt for me and for my wife usually a dress. We have only worn shorts to dinner once, and it was because our shore excursion was way behind, and while trying to power walk back to the ship to make dinner on time, I tripped and also had an extra splash of color;)

We have dressed this way on all the lines in my signature, and have never felt out of place or been made to feel underdressed on any of the lines by staff or other passengers.

What you describe seems to work on almost any cruise line in 2024. Almost everyone has luggage restrictions. Those who don't and live near the port can continue to bring their tuxes and fancy dresses if they wish. Hardly anyone does.

Things are more casual on Celebrity than they were 10 years ago. There are no more formal nights. They have shifted to having “chic” nights where people can “dress up” for a special evening in whatever way they like. Here is some helpful information

https://www.celebritycruises.com/blog/what-to-wear-on-a-cruise

We were loyal to Celebrity until about 5 years ago when we tried Princess for a unique itinerary. In my opinion the two lines are more alike than different.  We cruise with them about half the time now.

A few of the things we like are the longer itineraries (which are easier with the self serve laundry on all ships and very large closets on most ships), medallion technology rather than cruise cards, and availability of savory as well as sweet items at the 24 hour coffee shop on most ships.

The negative is that smoking is allowed in the casinos on Princess ships.

Currently on the Ascent in the Med ex-Barcelona. Most men wear smart casual clothes with a smarter shirt/trousers on the chic night. only a few tuxes on Chic night.

However there is a greater numbers who are dressing for the hardware store and some Spanish men who are wearing shortst-shirts in the MDR. Even saw one puffing a vape along the corridorr.

Tend to agree with Torfam.  Actually I believe there is an MDR on the new Sun Princess where you can wear smart shorts.

Mid 70's male.  Day time I wear shorts or jeans with a t-shirt or a polo shirt.  Evenings I wear a long sleeve button down dress shirt or a Polo shirt with dress slacks or jeans.  I no longer pack a tie, much less a suit.  I did not even take a sports coat on my last two Celebrity cruises.

On our 3 recent Celebrity Carribbean cruises (Silhouette and Beyond twice), for chic nights most men wore a sports jacket and most women had on "church" dresses. There were some short cocktail dresses and a handful of long gowns in the 20s/30s crowd (probably getting additional use out of bridesmaids dresses). I did see only one man in a tux. For non-chic dinners, men wore Dockers with a polo or Caribbean shirt and women wore sundresses, church dresses, capris or long pants.
